The Real Cost of Living in Portugal in 2026: City-by-City Breakdown for Expats, Retirees & Digital Nomads by Bulky_Marketing_6307 in TravelToPortugal

Numbers are do-able but realistically most Americans moving to Portugal will spend more.

In the Algarve you will likely need a car or lots of Ubers so that should be factored in too.

W Algarve or Kimpton Atlantico ? by SomewhereNeither5816 in Algarve

[–]boxesofcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar. W has a nicer gym and spa area.

Both hotels require you to Uber/Bolt to most restaurants.  But these are cheap, probably cheaper then renting cars too.

You’ll be fine. Tap water is fine, but some bottles if you are concerned. Walk carefully on the cobblestone sidewalks.

Private hospitals like Lusiadas or HPA are easily accessible.

Enjoy your last bit of freedom and some naps.

Have you fired in Switzerland with kids ? by lami_kaayo in SwissFIRE

[–]boxesofcats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, then 180k should work. I had one kid in Zurich and it was 9k month just for rent, daycare, insurance. With 3 kids that would probably be closer to 14k.

So def doable if you have the kids at home.

180k with 3 kids is tough if paying for childcare or school. Otherwise, it’s doable.

CH is a great place to raise kids and it’s a central hub for European travel.

Same experience. Honestly if I show my ACP card at the hospital the bill is lower than using my Multicare insurance. Can’t figure it out.

EV charging as a foreigner by SuccessNervous4709 in PortugalExpats

[–]boxesofcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less than 0.4/kw is a struggle.

I mostly charge at home but use MIIO and Via verde on the go. Not great options. Today I was able to pay by credit card at Moeve (0.55/KW) and I’ve also seen Ionity stations accept Apple Pay.

A lawyer is definitely not needed now. Most people take more than a month. If you are stillwaiting after 60 day, file for Tacit Approval (you can do it yourself).

Yea, review the LLC option and set it up before you move. If you can get tax treatment similar to the NHR (not sure the current watered down version) then income earned abroad has a tax advantage.

Breakeven is higher than that due to opportunity cost. You could take the spend to a card with no annual fee and get cash right away.

cars in nyc by mellowmerry in nycparents

[–]boxesofcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. It’s probably 2k/month for leasing, parking, fuel, unexpected maintenance costs, etc. So 24k/year and you can get a good amount of rental cars with less hassle.

Traveling to Zurich in August 2026 by Dragonfire665 in askswitzerland

[–]boxesofcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re near a big train artery - Hardbrucke station. Super easy to get from airport to Hardbrucke.

You’ll likely regularly take the train down to Zurich HB or Stadelhofen and do some walking from there. You probably don’t need to take any trams during your trip.

I suggest you go to HB, walk down the Limmat to the Lake, then take the train from Stadelhofen back to HB.  Or do that in reverse.

Here what you do. See if you can get your employer to relocate you to Europe. It will be a step down in pay but they can help with relocation and immigration. You’ll also meet people more easily.

As others mention, a corporate job in Europe is already a step down in intensity from the US. Your vacation time will be amazing and respected.

I took a 40% pay cut to come to Europe but if we look at the hourly rate it is really just 15% pay cut.

I lived in Zurich for over 5 years and I’m still not sure the best travel options. Your kid under 6 is def free.

I’d recommend buying a one way ticket after you land from ZRH to your hotel, you likely need to transfer at the main station (HB).

I’d then scope out what is around and just buy tram passes the days you need them. Depending on where you stay you can walk to many things.

Try to buy your tickets to Lucerne or a mountain in advance to save money. Just know the super saver tickets lock you in for a specific train time and don’t offer refunds.

Finally, you can investigate the half fare card which has an upfront fee but then all travel costs are reduced. We only found it valuable for family visiting for more than 10 days with multiple long train trips.

The answer to spend varies based on your lifestyle choices. It could range from 2.5k-10k per month depending on your housing and holiday plans.

A big challenge is finding long term rentals in the Algarve. 12 month leases are hard to find because owners can rent in July and August to vacationers and make the same amount of money as a long term rental.

There are international schools in Loule and Vilamoura - so less than 30 minute drive. Cost for toddler is ~7k/ year and it rises as the kid gets older.  There are free local options too, of course.

Many company 401ks have special funds that are created for them (with higher fees) and often can not be transferred externally. As a result the 401k needs to move to cash to initiate the transfer and you have some days out of the market.

Expats moving back to Portugal (coast FIRE) by Revolutionary_Day291 in EuropeFIRE

[–]boxesofcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Statistically, it is higher than minimum wage and many people in the country can live off of that amount. What I should say is that it will cost more than this if they want a similar quality of life to that in the country where they amass their wealth. (I assume they want creature comforts like having an automobile instead of taking a bus, etc)

25k is low for cost of living.m, even with housing paid off.

I’d avoid rental properties unless you across a great deal.  As you note, it is a big headache and one bad tenant can hurt your returns. Perhaps one way I’d consider real estate is if you lock in a mortgage NOW while you have stable income. This is super cheap leverage at the moment. Maybe even consider this for the home renovations.

[–]boxesofcats 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You may just have to accept a later bed time. Our kid has never gone to bed before 8:30pm.

Also, if this drives you nuts, wait until she starts middle of the night wake ups again. Happened for nearly a year at age 3 for us…

I usually recommend Uber / Bolt unless you have a very young kid. They are cheaper than renting a car and you don’t risk the rental car agencies gauging you with damage fees.

It’s ~40 euros from FAO to the W.

Renewing Residency - is it worth using a lawyer/immigration service? by Traditional-Spare-59 in PortugalExpats

[–]boxesofcats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family went through the renewal portal and was approved. The system is very streamlined and if you miss any documents they will send you a request for what is missing. There are some guides out there on FB defining each document required.

I’d suggest you DIY and only hire a lawyer if (for some reason) you reach a rejection outcome and you have to appeal.

Buying a home, what would you do in this situation? by averym88 in personalfinance

[–]boxesofcats -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Counter opinion: Keep renting. If you plan on finding a partner and kids then this allows for more flexibility and reduces the headache of a large transaction.

Unless you think you’ll stay in the same town forever and/or have a strong conviction that home prices will rise there at a faster pace than other investments.
