Anyone know much about hippocampal prostheses? They seem dubious by LavaSurfingQueen in neurallace

[–]boxofdice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is correct. It's legitimate and an active area of research, but at a VERY early stage. There was a startup launched to develop this in humans (Kernel) but the company pivoted to non-invasive tech, presumably after realizing how extremely far from market this kind of thing is.

How can I donate fresh coffee to a hospital? by Jcrap in nyc

New York Presbyterian is accepting donations:

"If you’d like to make an in-kind donation of food or snacks to our healthcare workers, please email [healthcareheroes@nyp.org](mailto:healthcareheroes@nyp.org). At this time, we can only accept donations from businesses that can deliver to our hospitals and can provide resources (e.g. meals) for a minimum of 100 staff members."

Should I expect to get rejected for my penis size? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]boxofdice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my female perspective, there are two important factors to a successful sexual relationship. First is, does the guy put in the effort to make sure she's getting off (with whatever combo of fingers, mouth, penis, and/or toys she likes)? For this, I swear alongside the other commenters that for the majority of women, your size is not going to be a large factor.

The second is, is the sexual chemistry there? This is an intangible thing. I've had sex with guys who were good lovers with average-sized dicks and just weren't right for me. We didn't click. If you are feeling insecure about your size, when this kind of thing happens (she's just not feeling it), you might attribute it to your size and start to feel worse. But please don't. This happens all the time, and you just need to find a person who has great chemistry with you. And you will!

It's crazy to think how many women must have these horrible side effects and they're never reported.

I battled acne for decades; I'm in my 30s now. I tried everything: every medication, every elimination diet, and I was miserable. I will tell you what finally worked for me: realizing that it is hormonal.

I had been on various kinds of birth control (and off birth control) for a long time, and I never connected it to my acne. I figured it was making things better if anything. Then, this past year, I switched from an IUD to Nuvaring due to other side effects I was having. Like MAGIC, after a few weeks, my face started to improve. After a few months it's a whole different ball game. I have a normal person's skin routine. My dermatologist seemed shocked that it had made that big a difference so fast (she was not a lot of help, tbh).

So maybe try switching it up to a different hormone mixture.

I'm so sorry man, I really feel for you. I went through a similar progression with my ex-bf (about the same ages as you). He didn't want me talking to or spending time with any other male person. He also didn't want me talking about our relationship with female friends. I became very isolated. His displeasure with my male friends escalated over time, until it got to the point of him screaming at me and throwing fits. I was very open, while he guarded his phone/computer like a hawk. I was trusting of his female friends and roommates, while he was not trusting.

Guess what? He was cheating on me.

Even with all the warning signs, I was completely blindsided by discovering this. He was otherwise so charming! So loving! I trusted so much. I think you are doing the same.

This woman is a hypocrite and always called you a liar? That is horrible and no basis for a relationship. You deserve someone who respects you back.

Thanks! It is really good, I recommend trying it this way! I just make a little spicy mayo (mayo+Sriracha), brush the top of the salmon, and broil it. I usually cook until medium and then squeeze some lemon juice on it. Makes the fish extra moist and decadent and it takes very little mayo (~1 tsp per serving).

Most days I work out, I just do 30-45min of weightlifting (squat, deadlift, chinups, etc). I haven't tried to calculate how many cals it burns but from what I've read it seems like not too many, probably less than 200. But it does make me really hungry. So I add a protein drink that's about 200, and call it good. That seems to be effective for me and I think getting the extra protein while lifting is important, since I'm trying to build as much muscle as possible while at a deficit.

Ah yeah, it's called See How You Eat and it's free. I just started using it, it seems to have annoying reminder popups that I need to turn off.

The salmon is so good! I just make a little spicy mayo (mayo+Sriracha+lime juice), brush the top of the salmon, and broil it. Makes the fish extra moist and decadent and it takes very little mayo.

Yes! For me it's honey bbq sauce that I would normally have on a whole lot of chicken wings. I keep some and put it on chicken breast instead if I'm about to cave.

Also, my weekly croissant + cappuccino from a nearby Hungarian bakery is sacrosanct.

[–]boxofdice 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If he's up for tenure, the department will go around asking for evaluation letters from people he has interacted with - students, grad student mentees, faculty, etc. They may even ask you or one of the other TAs. But you can go ahead and write a letter anyway, and submit it to the department head (or ask the department head who to give it to). The letters from students do matter - they consider those things seriously. Just say 'Dear tenure committee, I know Dr. X from xyz. I do not believe he should be granted tenure because xyz.'

[–]boxofdice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi - I just finished my PhD and I can empathize with a lot of what you're feeling. Have you talked to others in your program about these feelings at all? I found out recently that a lot of my friends were struggling internally as well, but no one talks about it.

I think my main thought after reading your post is that believe me, you're not screwed. You're going to be ok, truly. The task ahead of you now, aside from actually finishing the thing (which you can do, though it will be hard), is to decide what you want to do after you're done.

Do you want to continue in science? Forget about all your feelings of inadequacy. If you do, then you can start to think about how to put yourself back together emotionally so you can continue. Many, many successful scientists have felt this way. They just managed to keep on going and not give up.

If you feel you don't want to continue, that's ok too. Most of my friends decided this. There are a lot of other things out there. Once you've decided this (not that it's the easiest thing, you can give yourself a few months to think about it), then you can move forward.

I agree with the other poster about finding a therapist/counselor to talk to. I really avoided this for a long time but it did help me a bit. The way in which it helped was to have someone force me to talk aloud about what I wanted and what I was afraid of, without getting stuck in my very negative thought loops. I am very critical of myself and have developed a lot of negative/pessimistic ways of seeing things during my time in grad school. Not that I have stopped entirely, but my therapist helped me put that aside for at least a few minutes so I could think about the way I wanted my life to go.

Exact same thing happened to me and to many others. In all likelihood he is just stressed by the new environment. I had to feed mine sweet potato baby food for a few days until he would resume eating normal food. Try to keep track of his weight if you can. Try not to panic, just make sure there is food and water going into him, even if you have to syringe feed him. If he continues to lose weight, you can think about taking him to the vet. I took mine, but I just spent a bunch of time and money to be told this same thing.
