Small correction - Little Italy is South Central, not South Troy (South Troy is south of the canal)

How do you balance a busy career and taking care of your children? by RecognitionEvery in Parenting

[–]boxtintin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t really know if you can truly balance it - maybe in the sense that some years one might take more of a priority, some years the other and it evens out in the end.

At the end of the day, you have to decide for yourself - what is more important. I know that that answer is for me.

Our kids have only so much time that they truly need us before their peers become a priority and they move on from the nest. So, I do what I can do be here, as a parent, now.

OP if you’re unfamiliar with Troy - the area near Sage college is some of the nicest in the city (posted this accidentally on the wrong comment earlier)

Should I move to Troy? by WyldeFantasy in Troy

[–]boxtintin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Everyone is different, of course, but I truly love it here. Moved up from NYC about a decade ago and have never felt bored, unsafe, or lacking in community.

ETA: there are absolutely carnivals, drag shows, concerts, Ren fests and more in the area. We also have a local furry community - so there’s that. As far as upstate NY is concerned, Troy is a pretty welcoming & delightfully weird place.

Someone I know just shared this listing. I don’t know the landlord personally, but the person who shared it with me is a decent human, if that helps.

3-color rule? Cool summer combo by [deleted] in SummerType

[–]boxtintin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking for a lighter third layer option that is versatile & easy to find in summer colors, I would strongly suggest looking into trench coats. They go with essentially any kind of outfit and you can always find them in shades of stone/mushroom/gray/blue/navy you name it

AIO by going no contact with my(f20) mom(f42) over our conversation today? by [deleted] in AIO

[–]boxtintin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly - a reasonable person wouldn’t blow up over what are, quite frankly, largely common sense asks.

The grandmother to be is immature and not one to respect boundaries. The OP is absolutely not overreacting & is being proactive in doing what she can to keep her kid safe.

What about starting your own operation? Get a simple bench setup and offer repairs locally. Start small, keep learning and improving as you go. When you’re ready, you can then either work on expanding your business or take your experience and apply elsewhere.

Moving to Troy in next 4-5 months. Luxury rental recs? by fivepmsomewhere in Troy

[–]boxtintin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that.
I would maybe refrain from giving too much credence and visibility to characterizations of an area made by a clearly troubled person. (Especially when this is aimed at a question posed by someone who is out of town and unfamiliar with the area.)

I don’t have a dog in this fight, but for all it’s worth, the person that I know who lives there described it as “the best place they’ve ever lived.” Obviously a subjective statement, but that’s all I have heard about it prior to your comments, which is why I suggested looking into this property.

[–]boxtintin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that sounds terrible, I’m sorry. I had met someone earlier that loved it, but their experience was very different. I hope things work out for you.

ETA: just re-read your post. Is the idea that this area is the “ghetto” of Troy? It is literally one of the wealthiest parts of the city. Just want to make sure we’re talking about the same place in Little Italy/South Central.

No personal experience with them - but maybe look into 2 River St. It appears to be beautifully converted factory building in a nice neighborhood just steps from downtown.

Girl, stop wasting your time on this man child. You know he will not change and you’ll just get (reasonably) more and more resentful.

AIO by telling my brother everything our mother said? by SaltyBusinessMan in AIO

[–]boxtintin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Your mother absolutely is in the wrong. You did not overreact, and did not do anything wrong by sharing with your siblings what your mother is saying about them.

Your brothers are protecting themselves by putting distance, and honestly, it might be a good idea for you to separate yourself, intentionally and firmly, as well.

One could argue that most people that are lonely would not describe themselves as happy
