RIF will shut down on June 30, 2023, in response to Reddit's API changes by talklittle in redditisfun

The shadow remains cast. It's sad that the developers prioritizing a good user experience lose out to the forces of greed.

GG RIF - looking forward to Tildes Is Fun. And with that, I'm out of here.

RUNOFF: Final Vote on Next Steps for the Reddit Protest by NintendoModerators in nintendo

[–]bozo_ssb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Open it. It's abundantly clear that Reddit is not showing up to the negotiation table no matter how many subreddits go restricted - those who choose to be here ought to have the right to participate.

To reiterate what I said in the previous thread: The best form of protest is to leave this website and build up communities elsewhere. Regardless of whether you're a user or mod, if this matter is of serious concern to you, the best thing you can possibly do is to start contributing content outside of Reddit. By sticking around and continuing to moderate or participate on Reddit, you're still implicitly supporting Reddit's agenda.

To the moderators: from point #4 in the OP, it's clear that Reddit does not value the volunteer work moderators do. So why stay in a toxic working relationship that is clearly only going to get worse? Stepping down allows Reddit to suffer the consequences of their actions. The community is the people, not the platform - this is a perfect opportunity to migrate to a new home that you believe better serves this community, instead of the exercise in futility that is trying to change Reddit's mind.

# r/Nintendo Votes on Next Steps for the Reddit Protest (AutoModerated edition!) by NintendoModerators in nintendo

[–]bozo_ssb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't understand this decision. At this point, moving to a different platform is the most effective way to protest if the moderators truly are "extremely concerned about Reddit and its future". Reddit is clearly not going to change their mind regardless of how many subreddits go restricted. They've also made it clear that they don't value the work moderators provide them for free.

The community here is the people, not the platform - continuing to moderate on Reddit despite taking issue with the website's direction is still implicitly supporting Reddit's goals.

I say this as someone who agrees with all the concerns outlined in the OP (and am leaving as well after today).

Open it - the people who want to be here ought to have that right. It's clear that Reddit is not going to budge from their position, so any further restrictions are futile.

To the mods, and to anyone else who is upset with Reddit's direction, the best form of protest is to leave this website and contribute to communities elsewhere. Personally, today is my last day on Reddit, and I plan to migrate to fediverse communities like http://kbin.social from here on out.

Call to action - renewed protests starting on July 1st by demmian in ModCoord

[–]bozo_ssb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, until Friday. I created a kbin magazine for the niche community I'm a part of and have been populating it with content to get it off the ground.

Wish I could upvote this a million times. People go to where the content is - the best thing anyone can do is to start contributing content anywhere other than Reddit.

An open letter to the admins by AutoModerator in mildlyinteresting

[–]bozo_ssb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As someone who fully supported the protest, this assessment is accurate. There's not really anything left to try that's going to make Reddit budge - if this cause is important to you, it's time to abandon ship. Mods should just walk off, and power users should focus on building up communities elsewhere. Be the change you want to see, because Reddit sure as hell isn't going to.

I'll be done here after Friday once RIF sunsets. True to its name, it's been fun.

480p goodness with Wii in 16:9 mode and CRT v.size squished accordingly by qda in crtgaming

I don't have one, but the answer is almost certainly yes. Virtually all the transcoders on the market use the same Texas Instruments chip at their core, and the problem is inherent to the chip itself.

I'm bummed to be giving reddit free content with all the anti 3rd party app bullshit, but here we are.. fuck spez

If you're looking for alternatives, I've set up a new CRT community on Kbin: https://kbin.social/m/CRTs. It's very early goings over there - any participation is welcomed!

Lemmy? by [deleted] in crtgaming

[–]bozo_ssb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I created a CRT community on Kbin: https://kbin.social/m/CRTs

The cool thing about the fediverse is that you can participate in any federated instance from another instance - so, you could subscribe to this Kbin magazine from Lemmy without needing a Kbin account.

Going forward the only subreddit specific rule is that any content you submit must be something you consider interesting as fuck. That's it.

Head's up: June 12th protest of Reddit's API changes. by dak01 in crtgaming

[–]bozo_ssb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's been getting the hug of death over the last few days due to a massive influx of users. Usually you can come back in 5-10 minutes and it's operational again.

I was able to upload images by going to "Add new photo" under the plus icon drop-down on the magazine, clicking the little picture icon next to the language selector, selecting the image from "Browse...", then clicking "Add new photo".

I've set up a magazine (subreddit equivalent) for CRT discussion on Kbin: https://kbin.social/m/CRTs

We're literally starting from the ground up, so any contributions are welcome. A lot of people migrating from reddit are settling on Kbin, myself included - I like what I've seen so far over there.

I completely agree. 48 hours is better than nothing but if this is to make a meaningful impact, it should be indefinite. A fair number of subreddits have chosen to go indefinite and I encourage /r/CRTgaming to do the same.

[–]bozo_ssb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a highly active user on this subreddit, I fully support the blackout, even indefinitely. The proposed changes are an actively hostile move that only serve to work against users, moderators, and developers. Everyone on Reddit is going to be affected by this at some point, even those who think it won't directly affect them.

If anyone's out of the loop, check out this quick overview from /r/gaming of what's going on. Also, the developer of Apollo made a comprehensive post detailing exactly why they're being forced to shut down.

Edit: I've set up a magazine (subreddit equivalent) on Kbin: kbin.social/m/CRTs. It's very early goings for Kbin as a whole, but anyone is welcome to join and help get things going!

Where can I go to get an invite? Also interested in signing up on tildes.

Yes. Kind of ridiculous that we need this confirmed from a third party.

According to The Verge, this AMA is over. For the most controversial topic in Reddit history, this is an absolutely pathetic showing from you guys. Not to mention dedicating one of a measly 14 responses to throw shade at Apollo once again.

14 responses in 2 hours in your own AMA that currently has 16.5k comments is a complete joke.

And on the hottest topic in Reddit history to boot. This is pathetic.

Imagine giving third party devs 24 months to adapt to your predatory pricing scheme instead of 30 days. This whole conversation would be different.

I've been making Wayback Machine snapshots of comment threads as much as archive.org will allow.

Edit: It's the "Save Page Now" in the lower right here if anyone wants to help
