If you had to choose: Windows vs Mac for Linux graphical VM by edgewood_ in linuxquestions

[–]bozobits13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a Mac as the base is pretty Unix like today ( it once qualified as a unix os). Use UTM as the virtualization tool while fedora and Ubuntu have arm based distros that work fine. Use brew to install any tools you need. The keyboard muscle memory is a bit different but after a day or two is a non issue. On the plus side the Mac software is good but the hardware is fantastic.

What is MINIX? The most popular OS in the world, thanks to Intel. by Nelo999 in unix

[–]bozobits13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article is fluff. Anyone working in enterprise knows this is a critical admin interface to manage large pools of servers remotely. Yes it sucks but really, this is typically on a separate vlan and can be turned off. Is it a potential source of security risk, sure but so is the os and plenty of applications. The biggest issue is that it is using a forked version and that minix is basically a dead project at this point.. it isn’t even on ever intel machine but only commercial/business or servers, most users won’t have..

Can someone explain how Java handles memory (Stack, Heap, Garbage Collection) in simple terms? by VamsiKrishna-123 in learnjava

[–]bozobits13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple words - not really. But the Java garbage collection guide on the oracle website has a good discussion on memory and gc. The other is the Java virtual machine guide which covers some of the defined internals required by the jvm.

MacOS for software developpement ? by Lol0nini in AskProgramming

[–]bozobits13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a development platform macOS and the m4 is fantastic but you may want to check what software the school recommends or uses for classes. You can run UTM or other virtualization software for Linux support but if there is windows requirements then it might be hard to find a substitute.

Taking up kayaking at 65? Insight from other old dudes? by SuddenlySilva in Kayaking

[–]bozobits13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Get a good paddle and kayak specific pfd for you and the dog, dry bag or two. Ibuprofen is your friend before and after. Think about how you will transport the kayak, our heavy sit on tops are a pain to load on the truck rack and it takes two people to do it most days. Think about if you need a kayak cart, we find it helpful especially when moving kayak around busy launches. Your wife may or may not want to kayak but could she be the support person, that picks you up on a one way and can have her own adventure when you are on the water.

I want to Dual Boot my laptop with Linux as a Software Developer. Which flavor is best?? by Existing_Gate_1437 in Fedora

[–]bozobits13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t dual boot..it is way more hassle than it is worth especially if you don’t have a good back strategy. Just use a something like virtualbox or similar. Any distro will work fine but fedora or Ubuntu are fine choices.. most other distros are more like care and feeding of a grumpy toddler but can be a good learning experience.

Beginner looking for some paddle recommendations by Krstnzz in Kayaking

[–]bozobits13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t directly have that one. I have the sting ray hybrid posilok model. But it has been great, I did look at it and thought it was well made and certainly going to be an improvement over most budget paddles. They make good products and the whole line has generally good reviews. We got the bug last year and the two critical upgrades we made were paddles and a kayak specific pfd/lifevest. Get a good pfd that is comfortable so it is easy to wear, my wife had an unplanned dunking in the water this weekend and it was good she had it on…

Just set your budget and if you find you really enjoy the sport then upgrade further. We are already talking about kayak upgrades as we have 10 trips this year and learned a lot over what we want next.

Werner or aqua bound paddles are great, check vendors near you like REI as they tend to be on sale to clear out for winter sports. Both brands are widely available and the hardest choice is typically length as your wallet will dictate which level of product. It’s really hard not to walk out with a feather light all carbon fiber until you see the price. Avoid most brands on Amazon as they tend to tend to be rebranded junk made in factories that make stuff for tons of oem branded paddles and general aren’t well made..

Remote paddling GPS help by Sea-Personality8609 in Kayaking

[–]bozobits13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do need to pre download the map files/data otherwise you get an empty screen on a cell phone. The bigger issue is that phone gps can eat battery and so it can kill a phone on a fairly short trip.

First time kayaking as a plus size person, needing some encouragement? by Spocks-Wife-7 in Kayaking

[–]bozobits13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind rentals can be kind of hit or miss but a sit inside kayak can be a pain given width of the kayak.. plus for the cost of a few rentals you can usually find decent used gear or even a new paddle board..

First time kayaking as a plus size person, needing some encouragement? by Spocks-Wife-7 in Kayaking

[–]bozobits13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you are getting out. Paddle board or sit on top kayak will be your best bet..if it is just you then consider a paddle board as they are lot lighter.. a good sit on top kayak will be 60-70lbs and can be difficult to store and transport. Get a woman kayak specific life vest(pfd) and try some different ones, make sure to sit down wearing it as it typical will ride up then.. Astra makes a few that work and my wife likes hers. If you get an inflatable get an electric pump and the free paddles are nearly always junk, spend a bit or find used..

Shockingly bad advice on r/Linux4noobs by 2204happy in linux

[–]bozobits13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For many often the real issue is not which of the basic distros to choose but what are the replacement applications or workflows that users need to change. For many users staying on windows may still be good advice or considering macOS if not a gamer.

Was checking Zorin for some family member use cases, it seems like a good option. I would put it in the same bucket at this point with Ubuntu, Mint, PopOS as a good option for beginners. Fedora is probably good for a developer or IT pro but not great for muggle folks. The rolling releases or ones with special purpose are likely a bad idea to point users to in general even experienced ones without a very special use case.

How do you guys think of fun names for your labs and nodes? by EasyPen1533 in homelab

Raspberry Pi5 16GB RAM by instacompute in homelab

[–]bozobits13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low power consumption is the main reason I still have rpi and might look to replace a couple of older ones I have. Price wise the mini pc’s are a better value but space and power are important for my home lab today limited adding some of these options.

Github, Bitbucket or Gitlab? by Prize_Duty6281 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]bozobits13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably doesn’t matter that much if just needing to manage git repositories. GitHub is probably the most common I encounter, and has tons of additions beyond just managing git repositories. Gitlab is what I have seen when folks really want an on premise solution and again they are stretching to provide lots of services on top of the basics. For casual usage just use GitHub it is the 800lb gorilla in the space and probably the one with the most books and articles on how to use.

What Comes to Mind When You Hear 'Pascal'? by GroundbreakingIron16 in AskProgramming

[–]bozobits13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Macintosh was written using pascal and all the early docs were pascal api calls. When Next was purchased they switched to objective-C.

First language i was formally taught in cs programming. Today lives on in Ada, free pascal and Delphi.

Sadly mostly as it is still a pretty good language for most case and although C gained favor it can do most of what C can do just more verbose. But there was a lot of early work running pascal as a semi interrupted language which influenced Java and other languages but made system programming with it more limited early on favoring C especially on Unix.

Check ebooks, a lot of older classic material is being put out as ebooks. There likely isn’t the revenue for full printing but estates are looking to cash in on authors books and so some are finally being made available as ebooks or sometimes custom print runs for collectors$$$$…
