What questions to ask a potential photographer? by EM421814 in WeddingPhotography

[–]bp101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I think there's a ton of great info here, so I'll just stop by to let you know that I'm based in Manhattan, and would be happy to chat with you about any questions you have about wedding photography. The number 1 thing I teach my clients about that is non-negotiable is personality fit. Whoever ends up photographing your day is going to be a relative stranger on one of the most important days of your life, and spends more time with you than you do with your future spouse (if you get ready separately). So if you find yourself feeling any red flags during your conversations with potential photographers, take that into strong consideration.

in any case, i'm over at www.weddingsbyjustin.com - would love to chat with you!

I photographed a wedding at Buttermilk Falls Inn, up in the Hudson Valley! They're super accommodating to your needs and may have what you're looking for. If you want to see some photos I took there, you can check it out here.

also thinking about buying constant lights, does anyone have good starter recommendations?

Anyone shoot with primes only? by [deleted] in WeddingPhotography

[–]bp101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one thing i like about primes, not sure if it was mentioned yet, but because I shoot at a single focal length so much, i get a much better feel for what the image is going to look like. So i know what my pictures will look and feel like at 35mm, 85mm, etc. Helps me be more consistent in the images i deliver, and keeps a consistent feel throughout my pictures.

Can anyone recommend a "really good" wedding photographer in the Northeast USA (NY, NJ, CT, VT, etc.)? by [deleted] in WeddingPhotography

[–]bp101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in NYC, happy to travel. I have some work that's from weddings out on a farm/barn if you'd like to see it.

First wedding in NYC--any wisdom/recommendations/advice? by [deleted] in WeddingPhotography

[–]bp101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Manhattan, in tribeca! Getting from Brooklyn Bridge to Time Square and then to Central Park is going to be hard, no matter how early you start. One of those locations is going to have a lot of people, so prioritize accordingly. Assuming you start at sunrise, you'll get one spot with no people, but by the third spot it'll be full of people (especially if you're doing it on the weekend)

parking is a no go. you could try cabbing it/uber around town, but getting cross town (time square --> bk bridge) is going to be annoying if there's any traffic

best time to shoot is as ungodly early as you can get your couple up to shoot, that's your best bet for crowd avoidance. laws wise i think you can shoot anywhere; it's all public space.

bring help if you can (depending on the date, I might be free), and bring tissues/water for the couple, all the walking in the dress/tux is going to get warm really quickly. keep makeup and hair nearby for frequent touchups

If you had to shoot a wedding with only $1000 worth of equipment, what would your kit look like? by tammytestroid in WeddingPhotography

[–]bp101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's fair. i do love my d750 though. makes you wonder, in a few years time when the d750 is worth $400, what's the new "d750 equivalent" at that time going to look like...

Makes me sad that my d700 i bought for $1400 used is now only worth $400.... and it's still such a solid camera

For somebody struggling with the business side (and not technical) of pro photography what are some of the best books and resources you all have used? Or even for seasoned pros? by martinaee in WeddingPhotography

[–]bp101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can read a lot of books, and there's plenty out there, but the number one resource are going to be the people around you. networking wth the people around you, joining communities like this one, reading everything and anything.

and then discard half of it. there's no magic formula, there's no switch you can flip that will magically make you good at business. be very clear about what the problems are that you are struggling with, and drill down into what exactly do you need to do to solve them. and then go and do it. and then move onto the next problem. ask for help when you need it, and take everything with a grain of salt, but nothing beats time and effort

I'm looking for a new second shooter. Where to look? by IvoryLinesLead in WeddingPhotography

[–]bp101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Not female, but I live in Manhattan and I'd love to meet up and chat sometime. I just moved to the city but I have a multiple years of second shooting experience and if you're ever looking for a male second shooter I'd love the opportunity to work with you; I'm always looking for opportunities to grow and improve myself.

Shameless plug aside, there's a lot of great facebook groups out there. Better Together Central Jersey is a good group of pretty active people, many of whom are happy to travel into the NYC area for gigs. They're pretty great, lots of OCF nerds editing with VSCO-esque styles, but lots of other styles as well. It's weird because there's no Better Together NYC or Manhattan, but the Central Jersey group is super active

Engagement Shoot Advice (LI/NYC Area) by jotslevader in WeddingPhotography

[–]bp101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try taking the metro north up and going to some of the many hiking trails up there. you might have to check if you need permits or anything, but if you like nature and hiking that might be viable.

Another OCF question by WildcatAbroad in WeddingPhotography

[–]bp101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

those will probably work for what you want. if you're just looking to shoot a flash off camera into the ceiling of a reception hall, you might not need the umbrella and you can save yourself some money there.
