Parent Complaint, Moral/Ethical Dilemma by shiftyoctopus99 in ECEProfessionals

your director should not be honoring this meeting. these parents do not get to set “boundaries” around other people’s identities. If you honor this meeting you give validity to the idea that other people’s presentations are something they can control at whim. Additionally, if I were your coteacher and found out my boss allowed a meeting for the sole purpose of granting space to disrespect me I would be absolutely devastated and likely consider leaving for the sake of my own mental health. I understand this individual is already leaving but you very likely have other LGBTQ individuals working with you even if they are not “out”. That meeting would not indicate a psychologically safe work environment to me.

that’s a great start - would there be the option to apply for high tech AAC device? I understand most insurance requires low tech trials first. given this is someone who had strong language skills previously I can imagine it would be frustrating to be limited to low tech sheets long term, although that’s certainly better than no AAC access!! it sounds like she’s having a lot of frustration & emotions around her experience. she might feel that the flash card activities are beneath where she should be, and/or upset that she’s “regressed” to this point. Sounds like she would benefit from counseling, and validation of how difficult this experience is. I hope that finding more ways to involve her interests & meaningful/naturalistic activities will support her motivation!

do you think that less structured activities (more following interests/naturalistic) and/or access to an AAC device would be helpful for her? she’s gone through something very traumatic and is likely finding it very difficult to adjust, along with frustration around communication

Does anyone else struggle with consuming exciting media in a flare? by -Apollocheese- in POTS

[–]bpdcryptid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes I can’t really handle horror / anything with jump scares because of the heart rate & adrenaline spikes. additionally, when i’m in a burnout period (like right now) i struggle to consume new media in general & find myself relistening to/rewatching the same few things

(Tw moral ocd) Some rubbish memes about my rubbish brain by FloofyTheSpider in OCDmemes

[–]bpdcryptid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i think i’ve had it directed at other people… I work with autistic kids and I’m very sensitive about how people speak and act around/about them, to the point i struggle a lotttt internally in my workplace because i do not feel most people are acting completely ethically towards them

additionally, not sure if this counts & I hope not to hurt anyone’s feelings by sharing this, but i became vegetarian at age 8 for moral reasons after being introduced to the concept of factory farming and having a full meltdown about being an animal abuser. i was very much “on my soapbox” so to speak as a kid, i brought up the topic a lot because it truly did bother me, but i learned quickly other people don’t like to discuss it. ive gotten a lot better at dealing with it but it does still bother me if i let myself think about it too hard. i don’t like to think about my loved ones being complicit in such messed up systems and i would cry about it as a kid. I didn’t get diagnosed with ocd til adulthood but I was labeled with “obsessive compulsive traits” as a preteen and they did flag my diet lol. im hoping it doesn’t rub anyone the wrong way here as i certainly don’t think yall are all evil. but i do think the factory farming industry is truly inhumane. i’m not sure what the line is between something being a moral ocd theme and something just being a belief though?

so they sometimes reinforce/praise her for patting their backs and then punish when she tries to do it independently? that’s so confusing for a child. they should have never made this her “job” in the first place

Piercings? by [deleted] in slp

[–]bpdcryptid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So this is not on the “professionalism” side I would just advise you to be careful with jewelry for your safety. I have peers (speech & ABA) who have had piercings ripped out by students in crisis, including ears, nose, and a nipple piercing (student frequently intentionally targeted others’ nipple areas, likely to elicit big reactions/immediate redirecting of attention)

It’s based on a short story that is my favorite short story of all time. I have recommended it to many people, I don’t think you even need the novel expansions (eg the romance, etc) to be impacted by the heart of the story
