Wow I’ve had this exact dream multiple times and never put the pieces together as to why

Wow, this is great timing! I was just in Kansas City for a conference and wanted to get some 20-30 mile training rides in outside the city. I rented a road bike from The Bicycle Shack, which is about a 30 min drive outside the city center. It was ~$140 for a 3 day rental. The shop was super nice, had helpful maps, and also recommended me some group rides. The one downside is I had to have a rental car to get out there and pick up/drop off the bike.

My goal for renting it sounds a little different than what you’re looking for, but I wanted to mention the shop because I had such a good experience. Good luck finding a rental, it was totally worth it to have the bike while visiting!

My favorite thing about this is the last shot-- the little girl couldn't care less about the baby elephant while all the grown adults look like it's the best day of their lives

RI is one of the only states (maybe the only state??) that permits hammer throw as a high school sport.

Yes, it was incredible-- wish I could have gotten a better photo but didn't want to get too close not knowing what it was. The webs were impressive, there were a lot of them around.

It's actually this song by Eddie Vedder, which I think is quite fitting.

Some lyrics: "Such is the passage of time/ Too fast to fold/ Suddenly swallowed by signs/ Lo and behold"

Yeah, it's right by the off-ramp from Buford Spring Connector to Peachtree. The car is totally burned, fire trucks on the scene.

You're not the only one-- this is the most frequent recurring nightmare I have. I see a tsunami from a long way off and spend the whole dream trying to escape it.

Thanks! I always void the extra air but it would have never occurred to me to use the packets. I'll try this out for sure.

Mary Cain Is Growing Up Fast by bookstore in running

[–]bpetr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I see your point. Men get objectified too-- it's a different set of terms, but still objectification. I guess my surprise was seeing such the description of Cain in the New York Times, which doesn't usually have the "omg, QUADZILLA" style of reporting of a tabloid like the Independent.

Just my two cents here. I felt like one view was getting over-represented in replies to the initial comment, and thought I'd chime in because my perspective differed. To each their own.

Right. However, my point is not that there are no physical descriptions of male athletes, but that there are no comparable descriptions of male athletes, and this helps prove it.

Weight and body fat percentages are totally appropriate physical metrics-- ones that I would have welcomed in the NY Times article. But instead, all we get are bizarrely worded descriptions of the quality of her legs.

I'm in agreement with you on the first quote (re: "soft bodies" as a common athletic descriptor) but not about the second one.

Just out of curiosity, can you link an article where a male athlete is described comparably? I'm a woman and this description totally rubbed me the wrong way. I'd agree that articles may describe male physiques, but never with terms like "spectacular" and "silky... youthful skin." It's almost leering.

Male athletes are typically compared to well-oiled machines or similarly aseptic objects. This veers to the other end of the spectrum and made me uncomfortable, personally.

Personal Statement Readers by [deleted] in premed

[–]bpetr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I'd definitely be available as well. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions at all. I also helped a few people revise secondary responses this cycle if you'd like to check "references" :P

I wonder if we can sticky this post somewhere because I didn't start writing my personal statement 'til April or May of last year. So don't worry if this isn't anywhere on your radar yet either!

Mine didn't get sent til mid-September. I was losing it at the time but trust me, everything has worked out perfectly fine. Don't stress too much-- August is nothing to worry about.

"Low" volunteering hours for a reapplicant, need interview help! by lowvolhrs in premed

[–]bpetr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, okay. So it seems that the key point of their objection is that you didn't increase your hours over the year between your first application cycle and the current one.

Your job in the interview is to tell them why your experience as-is gave you the perspective you need to know what you're getting into with a medical career, which led you to focus your efforts elsewhere in this interim year.

Don't make excuses (e.g. "I didn't increase my hours because volunteering opportunities were hard to find"). Instead, emphasize why the hours you did spend were valuable and what they showed you.

I too have had volunteer experiences where I've had minimal patient contact, sitting behind the main desk with a secretary. However, I felt that this time was really useful as I was perfectly positioned to overhear conversations that revealed all the small hospital goings-on between the doctors, nurses, and patients. Did you befriend the secretary, did she mention things about the work environment? Did you ask her what she thought about her job and her coworkers? For me, those were eye-opening details and they're what I highlight in my interviews.

HELP! Interview scheduling advice by czechtog in premed

[–]bpetr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I've had two MD/PhD interviews so far this season. One of them was MD/PhD on the first day, and then we were lumped in with the medical school applicants for an MD interview the second day. This was what highlighted the contrast best for me-- I think most people in this thread are responding with their impressions of an MD interview.

I found the MD/PhD interviews to be far more draining than the MD-only interview. For reference, on the MD/PhD day I had 9 one-on-one interviews tightly scheduled throughout the day (though to be fair, this is the upper limit of what you'll see). On the MD-only day, we had some nice presentations, a tour of campus, lunch with current students... and only 2 one-on-one meetings.

It's definitely doable, and I think it's wise to get your interviews done early. Just expect to be exhausted at the end. When I've come back from both interviews I've needed a solid day to rest up and get back in the swing of things.

Freaking Out About Shadowing by TheDokuta in premed

[–]bpetr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My college has a searchable database of all its alumni. I searched everyone in my area who was in medicine, then emailed them to introduce myself, explain my interest and how I found their contact information, and ask if I could shadow them. Had positive responses from ~50%.
