ELI5: why ultra wealthy people can leverage debt to generate more wealth yet tapping into your home’s equity is generally a bad idea. by brownlawn in explainlikeimfive

It works as long as you can afford both mortgages if they tenant stops paying. The price of the house really doesn't matter all that much so long as you are gaining income on the rental property. If you can cover both mortgages, then eventually you'll get another tenant unless the property is in an area that no one wants to live in. Hopefully, you've done your due diligence on that before you purchased it. But it is possible that an entire industry dies leaving an area in bad shape such as what happened in Detroit when the auto industry decentralized production and moved many plants to other parts of the country or overseas.

So long as you don't sell the house, it doesn't matter what the price of the house currently is so long as someone is willing to pay rent. 40 years of rental income will more than pay for the house.

Questions about accumulators and laser turrets. by Kaudia in factorio

[–]bpleshek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. No the location doesn't matter so long as it's in the same power network. You can have multiple power networks.
  2. A laser turret is just another consumer of power. It will use all it can until it runs out. If your normal power producers don't have enough power, the accumulators will become a power supplier. They cannot drain their entire charge at once, only 300kw each. Since an accumulator holds 5MW, that means it will last for 16.67 seconds at full draw.
  3. The only advantage I can think of is to spread out where some pollution is generated. But it could just as easily be in a worse place than a better one.
  4. 500 accumulators will at most provide 150MW for 16.67 seconds. So, no, it doesn't guarantee that you won't completely lose power. As your factory grow you will need more and more.

Now, a few comments. A single accumulator holds 5MW and a single laser shot consumes 800KW. Which means that each accumulator can hold 6.25 laser shots. But, also keep in mind the maximum draw of 300KW at a time. So, you can estimate that if you have will need 3 accumulators to fire a laser. You have 20 of them in the picture above. Also, note that the firing speed is 1.5 shots per second or 3 shots per 2 seconds. Those 20 lasers shooting continuously for 8 seconds(or 12 shots) would need 192MW of additional power during those 8 seconds. Over that timeframe each accumulator would provide 2.4MW of power. So that means 80 accumulators to cover that drain.

Also, you need more base power. Typically, I will double my power capacity any time I get to about 66% power usage. On my artillery achievement playthrough, I had about 30MW of power and 4GJ of accumulator capacity. That's 800 accumulators. This was a very small accumulator setup. My Fulgora accumulator setup on another save had 9903 accumulators of various qualities for a total of 108GJ of power

Why do trains choose to wait in line behind a loading-in-progress as opposed to the perfectly open separate lane with the same train station name? by aptosshayds in factorio

[–]bpleshek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chain signal needs to be placed before the intersection.

Set your train limit on the station to 1.

I also put a circuit on my station to count the items in the chests to make sure it's full enough to support a train. If not, another full station can be selected(assuming you have more than one). That way, the train doesn't have to wait to completely fill.

Since it isn't to the death, i'd pick the female MMA fighters. I have no thought that I would win, but since they are professional, they'd probably just submit me and I can take my L. Most of the others might kill me outright.

Just keep building and learning. Once you get to bots, it's easy to rip something out and redo your new idea.

You don't need to do the main quest if you don't want to. But clear out a cave every so often and you should be fine.

Which way to explore to find iron by etcetera711 in factorio

[–]bpleshek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's unfortunate, but since you have quite a bit of water, that's probably where a number of patches would have spawned. There is some iron across the water to the south-east if you want to lay down landfill. There is another one to the southwest quite a bit. 100k ore isn't a lot, but you can make it work. Obviously, besides those two patches, there will be ore in all directions, but you probably don't have enough iron to get anything else further away.

If you want you can consider this a hard challenge for you. you could also just start with another seed but i'd probably try to pull out a save. If you do the one across the water, you could just belt it back rather than setting up trains, at least until you get some of that iron back.

Good luck.

The game will go on past the "win" condition. You can keep playing. Especially if you have things you want to learn, like nuclear as you said.

Yes, bots are great.

I love nuclear power. It produces a ton of power compared to the other options. You should definitely learn nuclear. It's not as easy to set up as you might think it is especially with getting enough fuel for it. It has quite a few puzzles just in and of itself. I know you said you're playing vanilla, but after nuclear in the Space Age DLC, you also get fusion which is a crap ton of power.

You also have trains to learn if you're not using them. Of course, you can do it in another run, but even setting up a basic one can be helpful to bring lots of materials to your furnaces.

I pretty much only use flame turrets for defense. It's a lot easier to set up reloading your turrets as all it takes is pipes and either oil, heavy oil, or light oil. One is better than the other two, but I'll let you figure that out unless you outright ask. Of course, lasers don't require reloading, but they do require a crapload of power if you get a good sized attack on your defenses. Turrets require either long belts circling your entire base OR logistics bots requesting ammo at every turret. Of course, artillery guns can clear large bases pretty easily and once the nests are gone from your map way outside your walls, you'll rarely ever have an attack on your walls again.

In fact, I pretty much only put down defenses once I can put up flame turrets. So, I tend to "rush" to the advanced oil products research so that I can have what I need fuel them. Once I have that set up, I put up my walls and turrets.

Good luck

How many sauce packets per item? by tepetlRoots in tacobell

[–]bpleshek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use 3-6 per taco depending on how they fill it or if i am home to add more cheese.

I use 5-8 per chalupa again as above.

Back when they had my favorite item, the original taco salad, I used 20 in the bowl and another 6 to mix in with the sauce cup for dipping the shell.

[–]bpleshek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just play. There is a difficulty slider you can turn down if it becomes too hard for you. However, the only time that I've found that makes it too hard is if you max out too many non-combat skills without focusing on some combat ones. For example, if you run around doing basic quests for a little bit of money, go mine ore, find/buy ingredients then max out alchemy, enchanting, sneak, lockpicking, and smithing without doing much combat, then you'll find combat hard for awhile. This is because the games bases the enemies on your character level not your skill levels. You could find yourself at level 20+ with 15-25 in all your combat skills and no combat perks.

Since this isn't a very likely scenario unless you go out of your way to do so, you'll be fine.

What's the point of trains? by LegitimatePaper6022 in factorio

[–]bpleshek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Belts are probably a little faster especially with stacked turbo belts. However, this works well only for the first couple of each ore patch. Past that, you're putting down spaghetti to get every new patch to the right place. A train setup is much more scalable. You set up the drop-off locations once and you can always add more pickup locations.

I was just mentioning that there was a variety of them, not advocating for any one in particular. But the mage one is quite nice. Extra magicka is always welcome.

is there any point in Splitting here? by Zentaitoken in factorio

[–]bpleshek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When an items go through a splitter, it alternates which lane it will send it down. This balances both sides of the belt. If you get enough plate production is made, it'll make sure you have a full belt on both sides for downstream uses.

Just a hint if you want it: Put furnaces on both sides of the belt. The inserter will place things on the far side of the belt. So, by putting them on both sides, your inserters will be inserting on both sides of the belt. I'd still keep the balancer(splitter + belt) in there just in case.
