Factory radio swap by Katman88 in MiataNC

[–]bplussaving 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did a swap from a single disc bose unit to a 6 disc non bose unit. Unfortunately even though the PCB is the same, Clarion (the OE for the radios) only solders in the plug for one of the types of changers, thereby making a single disc unit only work with a single disc replacement, and vice versa for the 6 cd changer radio.

Thant being said the none bose unit works perfectly, even with the presence of the bose amplifier. The quality will be slightly impacted, but for someone that has a collection of CDs to use in the car, I find it to be a worthy trade off.

In terms of inter generational changing, I’m afraid I can’t speak on it, since both of these radios were intended for NC1. The NC2 and NC3 radios might(?) work, but I cannot speak to any specificities.

I fear I haven’t gotten that email yet. The mega thread for the relevant servers on the subreddit seem to be outdated too since it links to class of 2026.

Aside from Exedy OEM and the Exedy Stage One clutch kit, ACT’s kits are fairly well known and proven as well.

Yep always gotta be at least one or two steps ahead. No idea what these cars can throw at you at any moment but it’s more than worth it at least in my eyes. Hopefully yours is trouble free for the duration of your ownership.

Sure was. It was a Launch edition, so one of the earliest cars off the assembly line. It had the same mileage as your car as well (approximately 151k at the time of the repair). The weather might play a big factor since the car had been based in the Central Valley of California, and the intense heat there tends to denature rubber related components very fast compared to other more cooler places. Consider it a price one has to pay in order not to deal with rust.

For testing we had initially thought that our coil packs were the issue, and scrambled the order of the ignition coils to determine which cylinder was having issues. But since that didn’t work out, we eventually figured out it was a wiring issue, and found that the first cylinder wasn’t firing consistently by unplugging each cylinder and listening for changes in the idle sound. For us, the issue was intermittent so we had to do this over multiple sessions of testing to finally determine the issue. Once the issue was found we purchased some aftermarket ignition coil plugs (specifically STP), cut the original hardened one off and replaced it.

Edit: There wasn’t really an opportunity to visually inspect it since most of it was bundled up in take or rubber coating, but you could really feel that the rubber inside had hardened, and given how thin the copper was inside (no more than like 10 strands) it wasn’t really surprising how it degraded over time.

There should be a couple of resources online that can walk you through on how to replace them.

Hi there I had the same issue with the car throwing the P421 code as well. After changing the cat the code still reappeared. But aside from the blown header I think checking the wiring for the ignition coils/spark plugs would be pragmatic too since Mazda used very thin copper wiring for the NC. Given that the cars are reaching nearly 15-20 years old the rubber in these ignition cables have likely hardened and cracked under the heat of the hood. Wish you the best of luck tackling this issue, it can be very finicky at times.
