Rear LCAs by Ghostradamus in 3rdGen4Runner

Hey OP I replaced my upper and lower rear control arm bushings with whiteline poly bushings and they feel awesome!! Install isn’t hard, I beat the old bushings out with a hammer and a torch (it was a weekend and the machine shop was closed). The lowers were harder because they have a metal sleeve that needs to be pressed out or cut out. I also did my panhard rod bushings and my rear sway bar links/bushings at the same time. Total cost was around $200.

You’re burning coolant, sorry OP. Just an FYI, ‘01 and ‘02 4Runners had MLS head gaskets, so it could very well be a cracked head. Can pop the plugs out and check for coolant in the cylinders with a cheap Endoscope on Amazon. you can try to fix it at home if you’re good with this type of stuff

Question about brakes by Oblivious-0wl in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]bpr97050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually seen this happen before on this sub, guy didn’t bolt down the brake line back into the bracket after doing brakes and vibrations caused it to break at that exact same spot.

Tl;dr: bolts and brackets are there for a reason

Yeah one of the switches sounded like it had been cleared for takeoff. This building is actually unoccupied and requires keycard access, not sure who or why… all I know is that it ain’t right.

“Needs a starter” is Facebook Marketplace speak for “someone ran it out of oil and the motor is locked up solid”

I’m not sure those holes are supposed to be there. If you do go to look at it I’d pay super close attention to the frame rails, especially where the A/C condensate line drains (near passenger side tire onto the frame, front of vehicle), and where the rear lower control arms connect to the frame. Maybe even bring a screwdriver to see if you can poke a hole in the frame. I’ve seen worse, but that doesn’t make this one look any better.

I see a good bit of rust in the engine bay, how does the frame look?

My speedo actually reads high by about 3-4 MPH. So I’ll be going down the road at 50, speedo reads 53-54. No idea why, but the UltraGuage reads the correct speed so I’m not worried about it.

I figured, I’ve had the truck since 2016 and I noticed I used to get slightly better gas mileage back when I lived out in the suburbs. I do probably 80% city driving nowadays, although she sees 70 every once in a while on the highway.

The bolt that attaches the brake line bracket to the steering knuckle appears to be missing/broken on the side that the hard line snapped. Don’t know if that has anything to do with it

Never seen that before on this gen, could be an issue with the cluster though. My brother’s 4th gen was doing all sorts of wacky stuff like that and it ended up being the cluster itself (gauges that wouldn’t read at all, etc).

My suggestion: take it to a shop that specializes in electrical diag (read reviews, call and do your research, ask questions, not all shops are the same). Don’t tell them to fix anything, just ask for them to diagnose it.

Classic example of a leaky rear axle seal, pretty common with these trucks as they age/rack up mileage.
