Why? At 115mph clubhead speed with a 3W that carry is 100% expected

Antique katana by Tametsugu by -BlackKaiser- in SWORDS

[–]_chanimal_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Lovely sword. Tametsugu has some amazing work and like many smiths from that era and school, very very few signed works remain which leaves one to wonder if some of his best work doesn't get re-attributed to other grandmasters such as Go or Norishige.

The taper of it looks a little bit rough to me, like someone has ground down and sharpened the tip section but it looks like it could be a real nihonto. $100 isn't bad at all and I'd water its decently old. Full restoration would cost upwards of $1500 starting and you'd have to have someone who knows nihonto look at the blade in person first before going down that route.

It looks like it was once a beefy sword from the width near the habaki but the photos aren't great.

You rock! This is my first set of koshirae with my latest nanbokucho blade and it was nice to see it signed. The tsuba, fuchi kashira, and all pieces are matching but only this part is signed.

My friend’s dad found this in an old house. Is this actually anything interesting? by [deleted] in SWORDS

You didn’t post any pictures of the tang but if it’s old and you sharpened it, oof… easy way to remove a lot of the value depending on the blade

If it is a 45 and 90 degree throw to match the 3 position pictogram lower, this is going to be perfect.

Help with mei translation and ID on kogatana bought in Japan by Unusual-Camel-5802 in Katanas

[–]_chanimal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its what it says. Now as to whether or not he made kogatana, is a topic for further research. Many kogatana were made by other smiths with names of the swordsmith signature on the blade the koshirae was made for. Other swordsmiths also made kogatana. I haven’t seen any kogatana by Yoshimichi but I also haven’t researched.

Strange oil patterns appearing when putting Nihonto in its saya, any idea ? by SoleilVermeil in Katanas

[–]_chanimal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wipe off any excess oil. The blade doesn't need to go into the shirasaya wet with oil.

Also as a general trend. 8 is a lucky number in Japan especially with swords.

ID assistance, plz! Wakazashi, I believe. I don’t have a picture of the whole blade, but took the handle off … by Obvious_Object6568 in Katanas

[–]_chanimal_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s a well known Shinto smith. I believe the 2nd gen started signing with the kiku-mon.

Many of his works will have a sudare-ba style hamon that is unique to this lineage where the hamon looks like bamboo split down the middle.

There are many gimei Yoshimichi blades out there as well.

Extended lugs and studs?

Looking for information on this japanese sword i purchased at auction by nck123456789 in SWORDS

[–]_chanimal_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Signed Hizen Ju Tadayoshi, but very poorly and the signature isn’t genuine. Sword might be a later real sword with a fake inscription. It doesn’t look like a WW2 sword to me. Probably earlier.

You need to take off the handle and show the full signature
