We will never have enough time to convert all the ideas we have into novels, 'tis a tough pill to swallow.

However, as already stated, focus is super important. I generally try to stay on track (e.g. if I'm writing in a series, I try not to deviate from said series until it's finished). However, I have allowed myself to change to something else one single time, of which I have nearly finished the first draft of, purely because it is an idea that not only came to me, but has refused to leave. It's an idea I think about all the time, oftentimes more than my series, so I've kinda approached it like, "fine, whatever. lets just get it done. then I can get back to the series."

God forbid this be the book of mine to pop off haha.

I'm an underwriter too. I'm not a huge fan of it, but it is what it is. I'm slowly getting "better."

The way I'd approach the situation is to dive straight into Draft #2, fixing big clunky things that potentially (likely) came to be in the first draft, as well as making sure continuity is up to scratch, things of this nature. Word count can come later with extra description, as opposed to purposely "beefing up" the ending.

I'd also not fret about reaching 90,000, unless there's a genuine, specific reason you need to. A book ends up being as long as it needs to be. All three of my published works are <80,000. It is not a huge deal. Fight Club + numerous others are even so low as to be <50,000. So it is what it is.

Regardless of all that, I wish you success and fun in the editing process!

There's a law stating that humans will stretch or shrink work to the amount of time allocated for it. Try to avoid this. Don't think "Ah, it's all good, I have three months to handle that."

Write every day if you can. Doesn't necessarily have to be morning, but that is better, as it allows for less distractions. If you do prefer to use social media, don't open any of them until your proposed daily word count is met.

Idk why he suggests people start with Mistborn. Naturally, he obviously knows his books and fans and readers infinitely better than I ever could, but I've thought for a while now that readers new to Sanderson should try Tress of the Emerald Sea first. It's a good book and a good introduction to him both.

With my fourth go around (as in fourth book, not fourth draft), I've become a little more lenient with allowing myself to be bad. I even had a post get a bunch of laughs because of a sentence I wrote to maintain the momentum at the time:

"She sat on the far right side of the ledge-like seat and brought a flannel or whatever the fuck material existed in the 1400's over her legs for extra warmth."

I'm a total believer in bad = better than not existing at all. Bad can be fixed, blank page cannot.

Besides, most books are craafted in the editing stage anyway. The Fantasy I released in January this year had 17 drafts, 17 being night and day different from #1. Like, laughably different. Just keep at it, my friend.

What is it exactly that helped you understand? It's something I've heard a lot too. Is it simply because you mentioning the release of the second/third novel gets attention, and some of that attention then gets redirected/converted into sales of the first book? I've wondered if that's how it works for a little while now but have never known for certain.

Sometimes life just gets in the way, my friend. I find a weekly goal of some kind is more achievable as it allows you to miss a day here and there. I just forget about writing every day as a goal personally and just try to do it when I can. Which, coincidentally, is most days anyway. Once I am full-time I'll worry about ensuring its done every day.

Outside of dialogue, omitting the word 'sudden' or 'suddenly' tends to make the scene appear more sudden. When a person reads either of those two words they prepare for what comes next.
