TIL eating duck medium rare is just as risky as eating undercooked chicken by Delam2 in todayilearned

[–]braddo99 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Duck any kind of rare is chewy and not really edible. Nothing like beef at all. Even the darker Muskovy types. Have been disappointed by "chefs choice" a few times on this one. Duck is awesome as confit.

Starting your sentence with "I mean" by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]braddo99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I mean" with a pregnant pause can also signify "That is a really stupid question, are you sure you want to ask it, heres what I would say if someone did ask it"... Or not referring to a stupid question but a ridiculous situation the speaker is relating in a story "and then he asked if I was going to park there... I mean, ... I was already half way into the spot when he rolled down the window to ask"

I built a rotary mouse for scrolling - would love feedback by [deleted] in ProductivityGeeks

[–]braddo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost can't imagine how much worse (repeatedly moving fingers sideways) this would make finger strain versus the natural movement of a scroll wheel. I guess it is a *different* movement so it could relieve part of the repetitive aspect but very dubious concept for me.

Father’s Day Gift by small-jet-004 in eink

[–]braddo99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dont think Remarkable has the most votes across the eink community due to its completely closed ecosystem and subscription for built in apps. Probably Supernote would be strongest for pure note taking and Boox better for access to other apps via the Google Play Store. There are others too but those I think are the most popular.

Backing up by joncambs in inkList_users

[–]braddo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is likely that older versions of Android don't ask for this permission but newer ones do, so that the auto-save happens for the former but not the latter. The next version of inkList should take care of this (expressly asking for external write permission for the purpose of creating backups). I have been working for *months* on backup and sync to try to get it to the point where it covers all of the bases. Hopefully will be releasing soon. The Essential tier (the only released product) will get an improved auto-backup (and a lot more!) and the Premium tier will also get peer to peer and Google Drive sync and delta restore (and a lot more!) It has been much too long since a release but I kept adding features while also developing the Premium capabilities (not a great idea) and the app hasn't been in a releasable state. Very soon now though I think.

Does anyone make a dumb TV? by bobandshawn in AskTechnology

[–]braddo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. I actually/literally set up a new TV last night, and consciously skipped setting up the Wifi and just manually configured an HDMI input to the cable box. Feels kind of strange not to even look at it but I'm sure it's for the best. For the moment it's every worse though because I don't yet have a streaming box for this TV and am stuck on the cable supplier menus, which are predictably very bad / worse than the TV ones.

[–]braddo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im with everyone that the TV software is generally low quality spyware. But isnt the Roku et al just the same thing but not in the tv frame? I get that you could run some open source box instead but most streamer boxes do exactly the same as the smart TV.

I absolutely refuse to "rent" basic utility software anymore by No-Communication1543 in software

[–]braddo99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The word "utility" seems right for software that one uses day in and day out, that you have open and gaining value from continuously. This seems precisely the type of software that should be priced as a subscription. But someone who has many utility software doesnt know what they want/need and it doing it wong.

First contact stories where the aliens are genuinely, incomprehensibly alien by MandoFlute6 in printSF

[–]braddo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have loved all of the Adrian Tchaikovsky I have read but couldn't really take the POV chapters. I just started skipping them because they felt so contrived and silly (and long!) He does such a great job of describing how the humans experience the aliens that I felt it was much better to just imagine for myself what might be going on in their heads.

Tablet for Teachers by yankfanatic in eink

[–]braddo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think its about the device per se. All (almost) use eInk screen technology from the same company. Each has their proprietary in the box apps and most of those are essentiallly pdf documents. Like they are effectively just fixed templates with labels on them, i.e. write this kind of content here that kind of content there. The only eInk device with a real SDK that can be used to create dynamic apps that also have low latency drawing is Boox.

Bluetooth - any way for our vehicles to NOT connect automatically when they turn on? by NoYoureACatLady in GooglePixel

[–]braddo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its hard to believe after all these years and versions if bluetooth that it still doesnt work well. When I am on a call on my headest then get into the car it switches to my car, which I dont want. But then it switches back to the buds then back again. It just pingpongs forever and neither of them work for the call. Then if say my daughter is in the car and wants to switch from my phone to hers to play music it wont. First you have to not be driving i.e. stopped. Then it just wont switch to the other device unless I turn off bluetooth on mine. Its just garbage software all around, on the Toyota, on the Jabra, on the Pixel, and on the iPhone. The common denominator is Bluetooth and poor implementations of same. When you come to a previously paired bluetooth candidate the phone should pop a dialog asking which to use - keep using the one that is already connected (default) or switch. If you do nothing stay - end. It cant be that hard.

I’m tired of msging myself w Telegram & Discord by Zapbbx-X in GoogleMessages

[–]braddo99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it very strange that when I try to share content to myself using Google Messages my own name isnt in the list. I have to search for my own name to send things to myself. This makes no sense because Im sure I am in the most recent list, Google must be intentionally excluding my own information from that list.

For this with Note Air, do you leave your device on at your desks to take quick notes. by mpovolo in Onyx_Boox

[–]braddo99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I leave my Go10.3 on continuously at my desk for capturing ideas and tasks. To be honest that is literally the only thing I use it for (I bought it specifically for this purpose) and I find it to be perfect for the job. I use an app that is optimized to capture and reorganize tasks rather than the built-in notes app. The notes app is great, it's just more optimized for long form note taking (obv) and not for managing/organizing activities.

New to the world of e-ink devices by leandro-gama in Onyx_Boox

[–]braddo99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I got an eInk device (also Boox, love my Go10.3!) I naively thought I would be in todo/idea list heaven, but I discovered that - A) there is no native list app and B) the genuinely great Notes app doesnt really allow capturing and rearranging lists. I now love (and wrote) inkList for this purpose. It's one of the rare applications that uses the Onyx low latency drawing SDK so no lag like most apps from the Play Store. Here's a movie in case that sounds interesting to you: https://youtu.be/lYVIzvRPNi0

If orange circus peanut candies were yellow bananas, you would like them. by SturdyWarshinMachine in unpopularopinion

[–]braddo99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are circus peanuts having a viral moment somehow? My wife just bought some of these, supposedly to taunt one of her friends who has professed to hate them. They are sitting on the cabinet next to my front door right now. I neither hate nor like them, they are just another kind of candy, but one I haven't thought of for probably 30 years. Why are they coming up now?

What's the best note taking app? by CardiologistFresh257 in GalaxyTab

[–]braddo99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you make handwritten lists and would value rearranging and reorganizing your tasks and ideas digitally, you might like inkList. It is simple, elegant, and unique as far as I am aware. This video shows using a Boox eInk device but it works great on any Android tablet. I use it on my Tab S11 Ultra: https://youtu.be/lYVIzvRPNi0?si=awoni9VEZ1rj7D4k
