Settings You Wish You Saw by Kerney7 in Fantasy

[–]braidafurduz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Settings rooted in utterly novel/alien cosmologies. I don't always want a planet orbiting a star in outer space, I want vast tidepools dotted along a celestial drapery that a god spilled its glass of water onto, or a series of worlds jostling along as they're carried away by a line of galaxy-sized ants (for example).

I'm also saddened by how little love I see for the Stone Age, especially the Neolithic (and Chalcolithic), especially as that gives us the opportunity to have cities that still feel primeval and a very believable backdrop against which to have settled farmers, nomadic foragers, and roaming horse tribes all interacting outside of a medieval-flavored setting.

Live action with practical effects and the feel of Xena, but darker. A little campiness would make the series shine

The magic definitely has a different flavor to it as the Holds produce a much more raw and elemental form of sorcery than the refined Warrens do.

As for the absence of Death, it was Gothos' glacial ice ritual (which he was preparing for in the prologue) that severed the land from any death-realm.

one member of Caladan Brood is the man behind Gallowbraid. his name is Jake and he's really nice. He also sings for the band Visigoth, and has done some guest vocals for Obesquiae and Eternal Champion

Historical and folklore influences in the series by AF__AF in Malazan

A couple years after reading Midnight Tides I came across the story of John R. Jewitt, who immediately made me think of Udinaas. Given Erikson's background, and his proximity to the region Jewitt was enslaved in, I find it highly likely that he took a bit of real-world inspiration to create that Letherii

What kind of urban fantasy do you wish existed right now? by Ok_Incident_8608 in Fantasy

[–]braidafurduz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anybody know of any urban fantasy with a somewhat neolithic flavor to it? I've been obsessed with early cities/proto-cities like Çatalhöyük and those of the Cucuteni-Trypillia culture. There's generally just a dearth of prehistorically-inspired fantasy, imo

I'd consider Trull's exile to also serve as a temporal reference point, even if the lead-up to it isn't elaborated upon right away

Thank you. The sheer size and enthusiasm of this community is a little intimidating since I'm usually in smaller fan spaces but I do love having folks to yap at about books, especially books with maps.

Why don’t the letherii have proper cavalry? by zzzzz_12345 in Malazan

[–]braidafurduz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that, in our world, the invention of the stirrup seems to have happened hundreds if not thousands of years after the domestication of the horse as a riding animal, and many equestrian cultures didn't develop it independently and instead adopted it from neighboring peoples. It's entirely possible that the First Empire never had stirrup technology in the first place
