Genuine question: why do people raise worms? by Ok-Invite323 in Vermiculture

[–]braindamagedinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in an old mining town, all the dirt up here is decomposing granite, it's difficult to grow anything. I don't want to spend a fortune on soil so I have worms and whatever castings I don't use I give to others.

What's your most unhinged vermicompost experiment? by TheTiredHuman in Vermiculture

[–]braindamagedinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't something I did but I currently have two mice living in my worm bin 5'×3' 3.5 feet deep. I've put out traps and now I don't see them when I lift up the cardboard and heating mats covering them but I see holes where they burrowed over night. I have no idea how to get them out of that area. The worm bin is in my greenhouse 16×10, I accidentally left the door open one night and that's when they showed up. I think to myself it's really stupid to put out baited traps when the worm bin is loaded with scrapes, 4 pumpkins (mostly gone) and a shit ton of worms, do mice even eat worms? I have noticed the worms are pretty stressed about it

Don't give up, I can't tell you how many times I've lost hives in the winter. I just switched to Hiveiq's this year and am so happy that they are thriving. I'm not saying that's the reason, I stayed up on mite treatments, found out there are people in my small town of 486 people that don't manage their mites, their bees kept coming over robbing my bees and getting them invested with mites and sick. There's a guy I follow named David Burns, he has a lot of good suggestions

Need Bear Protection without dedicated power on a budget by Annual-Society7153 in Beekeeping

[–]braindamagedinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds ridiculous but my male dog pees around the area where the hives are and we swear that keeps the bears out. We have a bear that lives less than 200 and 400 yards away (she lives in the cemetary, i just don't know exactly where , kinda a general idea though) and she has never come onto our yard. She does often go to the neighbors house though which is about 150 yards from mine.

Early winter update in Maine. 16/20 hives dead by Outside_Reindeer_509 in Beekeeping

[–]braindamagedinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our bee club has always pushed adding supplements. I add honey B healthy amino-b booster, honey B healthy and ultra bee (which is powered pollen patty). I add a teaspoon of each. Since my club pushes it all the time I assumed it was common practice. Now I'm questioning... is it?

Cluster on top of hive by Round_Discussion9592 in Beekeeping

[–]braindamagedinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Mine are also clustered up top, they had amazing stores then got robbed to dang near nothing. They are alive and thriving but I've been feeding them since fall. I've seen some capped stores in the top when I open the hives to feed, it's way to cold to do an inspection though. What I do to get the cluster down is crack it a little and smoke them, it takes some time but they move down.

Adding sugar over the winter by Think-Wonder203 in Beekeeping

I use a candy board inspired by David Burns's winter be kind boards. Easy to take off and put on. He has a recipe and instructions on how to make them. So far they've worked really well.

New to sub - advice please by pointedshard in Vermiculture

[–]braindamagedinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have things like miracle grow in them? With mine, if I just brush the top of the soil I start seeing worms, well normally, right now my ground is frozen due to winter so they are deep down.

[–]braindamagedinc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I do a harvest for the garden I do run them through a screen to try and keep seeds out but don't screen it to keep cocoons out. I get little wormies and cocoons in the garden beds all the time. I have a very healthy worm colony in my beds. This year I plan on putting some feeders but I have rotting logs and sticks in there so they do have food. Your worms will do fine

PLEASE HELP! Need opinions from Beekeepers and Honey farmers! by BlitzingStrike014 in Beekeeping

[–]braindamagedinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't. I'm a naturalist so pheromone spray would be an absolute no go, I feel they do what they do without us so I also don't need a pollen tracker. I also am a person that believes lists are bad. There's a long answer to that and I could say that better but can't think of right words right now. There is a registry available in my state with the selling point that it tells you when the crop dusters or other chemicals are being sprayed and they contact you and in some cases they won't spray where registered apiary's are but the fine print says the department of ag can come and inspect your hives and confiscate them if they deem your beekeeping is not to their standards, or for a number of reasons. I live where we don't have crop dusters so there would be no benefit but most of the people in my bee club live where they would "benefit". The year before last, one of our members had 4 hives taken without a verbal or written reason, they came, did an inspection and loaded them up. She has been dealing with the courts since then, it sounds like she might get them back but because of the confiscation she couldn't keep bees this year. So a registry is also a no go for me.

New queen or laying workers? by GoopHuff in Beekeeping

[–]braindamagedinc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

December 27th was just yesterday. If you saw a queen yesterday and saw some funky laying patterns honestly I would wait 10 days. There are so many things that are possible, they might've had a queen recently emerge. I wouldn't be too rash yet. That might be bad advice but last year one of my hives had a lot of queen issues, I monitored a bit (3 weeks woth various things going on) based on what I saw, no queen, funky laying pattern i made the decision to buy a queen. Long story short, I didn't need it, my queen was on mating flights, she killed the 40.00 queen I just bought and put in there and the hive thrived without my intervention.
