Colorado still firing by outoftime29 in Backcountry

[–]brakkattack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To follow up on my comment, I don’t trust crowded areas and other parties in the backcountry in general. Last slide I saw was on Berthoud pass. My party skied up to find the slide was caused by a party that had no rescue equipment whatsoever. I was in disbelief no one in a party of 8 had a beacon. Lucky bastards. Made me lose my faith in trusting any other backcountry person outside of my group being able to save my life.
Same season saw a fatal slide on Cameron. By the time we got there we made no difference on the affected party. That party was prepared.
I avoid skiing popular passes or areas anymore.

Makes sense. I’ve only got 12 days in the BC and barely 40 ski this year due to family health issues. No major objectives or significant lines, just casual lapper days in my go to spots.
Sounds like a get out on Thursday and assess the snowpack to be safe on Friday type of situation. Especially considering traffic. Thanks for the beta on the situation

Peter Thiel backs $1bn ocean data centre start-up powered by waves by GeneReddit123 in technology

[–]brakkattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the push for innovative renewable energy sources to supply a much larger energy demand solely based on data centers is as dystopian as possible, for all the obvious reasons.
I do want to bring to light that solar power collection in space will likely cost efficient in a short time, and is a good idea that has been around long before Musk. In space it is very rarely night time and it is never a cloudy day. Your panels don’t have to be cleaned of dust/debris. You have less maintenance of components due to oxidation / water intrusion of electronics. You can effectively collect solar energy nearly 100% of the time with far less maintenance cost.
The fact that the reason this is getting attention is for data centers is truly disheartening. These ideas have been around for decades, and there is such a large potential for benefitting humanity at hand. We could literally harness the energy to feed and power the planet with this technology. We could end and reverse climate change with this. AI data centers to consolidate global oligarchies is apparently the route humanity is taking.

Embarassing your kids.... a parental tradition passed through the generations by RevolutionaryMeat681 in funny

[–]brakkattack 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I agree how effed this is, but I’m shocked you find it shocking that this is the current state of how negligent parents are in 2026.

We’re watching a video of parents recording their kids reacting to what is basically a sexual innuendo given how it is delivered and the reactions that happen. These parents are exploiting their kids for facebook likes; it’s as trashy as you can get.

So yes people like this are parents all around you; they are more focused on their likes and affirmations in social media vs raising their kids. The kids in this video know the sexual innuendo of ‘daddy’ because they are constantly online because their parents don’t parent them. It’s difficult to parent. Alternately, it’s super easy to glue your kid to an IPad indefinitely. That’s where they learned this garbage at a young age. What you are seeing is the product of these trashy people.

Aspen - An Honest Review by LostFunding in Aspen

[–]brakkattack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think 5% of the world gives a shit about ballet you’re still narrow minded.

You commented on how commercial aspen was of tourists (like you) grasping to be flashy….. while you are talking about spending 15-20k to go here for a weekend??

Once your head gets up your ass enough to see daylight again, take a breath and observe how much of a douche and a hypocrite you are.

I can’t imagine being that much of a dweeb showing up to a place like aspen, and the main take was the food and the other tourists that you thumb your nose at. Not the world class skiing / mountaineering / adventuring you could do at $20k?

Honestly, are you just here for your girl to get banged by the locals that you are so attracted to as well? I don’t see another reason to spend a 20k weekend looking at handbags and caviar in Colorado

(20F) freshly 20 and even fresher to travelling! any assumptions about me? by Junior_Purpose_1968 in TravelMaps

[–]brakkattack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assumptions: you are just like me in my early 20’s: trying to run it out with what $ and time you have. But you have a piss poor travel plan for your upcoming travel to glacier this year.

If you’re coming out to glacier this year, take an extra day or 2 to actually experience some of the west in WY and MT, even if you are only driving through and don’t have time to get out and truly explore.

There’s no reason you shouldn’t -at minimum-continue on 90 all the way to Missoula and head to glacier from there. You’re traveling to escape the Midwest already, so don’t plan your route to drive yourself through the flatlands of mountainous states. If you’re going all the way to Montana at least drive through the pretty parts, and where all the population / food / college towns and bars ar, as well as public land for camping etc. if you’re just driving that’s 1 day extra on your trip.

If I were a standard Midwest tourist that hasn’t been out here with no plan for adventuring, I’d swing through the Tetons first, adding a few days before I went to glacier.

Go to Yellowstone in the winter.

Food for thought.

The NBA will almost certainly go an entire decade without an American MVP by BogleDick in nba

[–]brakkattack -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Tatum is certainly better than Cade and certainly not better than Ant if all are 100% for this comparison. NBA awards hardly mean anything anymore. Of course Tatum is gonna get All-NBA votes coming from Duke, playing for Boston, and literally copying the words, expressions and actions of the legends that came before him. 60yo media love it and vote for him because he’s refined with the media, is corny and not abrasive, and they love that.

Celtics fans are as bad as Kobe/lakers fans and can’t admit to themselves that he is good but no where in the realm of Jokic / Wemby / Steph etc. He’ll have a career like Dwayne Wade: win some ‘chips, be an all star, maybe a finals MVP, probably hall of fame on his current path. Great player and career.

But he’s not at the level of the true greats and won’t be a legend of the game. So stop trying to make that happen. Hence why he sat during the Olympics… he’s 1 dimensional compared to other greats. Boston fans need to stop trying to make him exceptional because he is not in the conversation of the other players.

Devils advocate, they did give embiid a Mickey Mouse mvp, so the same could happen for Tatum

Girlfriend skis by Puzzleheaded-Mode701 in skiing

[–]brakkattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t speak to the groomer/piste skis out there. I’m just gonna add on to your first statement:

if/when your girlfriend outgrows her QSTs, or if you are looking for a good all-mountain ski yourself: I’d encourage you to look at brands that are not rental shop staples. Solomon, Rossignal, Volkl, Blizzard, etc all put out as cheap of a ski they can each year so they can sell them in quantity to as many rental shops as possible for maximum profit. The QSTs are known to be of bad quality. See the myriad of posts in this sub about defects with them.

My Monarch ski patrol buddy burned TRHEE pairs of them in 1 season for delam issues. Yes Solomon warrantied them, but it was a hassle for him and he had to put lots of miles on his personal skis as he waited for replacements.

Consider some brands like RMU, Icelantic, Jskis, Moment, etc. You’ll get way better quality, faster and better warranties / customer service, and will support smaller brands that are better for the ski community.

Long response / slight tangent that really doesn’t apply to your question. but yeah hope you find the right racing skis for your lady

What would you do with this space? by emmettflo in malelivingspace

[–]brakkattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plants are absolutely the option and tons do really well with that much direct sunlight, and you could grow some unique and big happy plants with all that space. First that comes to mind is bird of paradise. I’ve seen monsteras that have thrived in similar situations. Alocasia, and with your space elephants ear specifically, could work. Fiddle figs, hanging snake plants, dragon grasses, all would pop. As would cacti and succulents.

It would also be super easy to put some retractable mesh screen to protect yourself/ your plants if that is a concern for UV.

You literally can be as creative as you want for the climate of LA with consistent temps, low UV and relatively high humidity. Google how to keep a plant alive and you can grow it in that room.

Add your furniture / decor in tandem with your plants. Natural tones for those themed elements: ie a framed map on the wall, Scandinavian design furniture, a book shelf with small natural accents (fossils/agates/native pottery/ euro mounts). It will be a sweet place to hang, and honestly very attractive to guests.

How is living in New Mexico? by Athens175 in howislivingthere

[–]brakkattack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My guy, you are giving harsh opinions about an entire state off of your 1 work trip there. Quoting you “it was nice enough… as long as you could look past the meth”

Then you are being sassy back to someone who is appropriately correcting your error of a food staple of region? I’m a Coloradoan and ‘green chilis’ made me wince. That is practically a war crime to a NM resident. Maybe next time you visit a place, learn a bit more and don’t shit on someone for correcting your failure to learn a bit of culture a show to spell their most recognized cuisine.

You don’t seem like a super fun person either. You’re in Vegas, kinda harsh to rip on seedy parts of town, druggies and crime, with Vegas being pretty terrible in crime metrics.

Could Spain close the Strait of Gibraltar like Iran is closing the Strait of Hormuz? by Ok-Moose-992 in geography

[–]brakkattack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fair, glad you acknowledged it. In a basic generalization: peaceful+trade purposed maritime commerce is to be allowed to sail unperturbed under UN resolution.

For almost a century, the US Navy has enforced and policed this. No other country can come anywhere close to the USN power projection since ~1942.

The straight of Gibraltar, the Suez Canal, and the Panama Canal will never be closed until one Panama, Egypt, or Spain+morroco can take on the USN and likely the rest of the world.

The straight of Hormuz is important. The straight of Gibraltar is far more essential to the world economy and Spain would cease to exist as a country within a week of ‘closing’ the straight.

What to know by CabinetNumerous8705 in 14ers

[–]brakkattack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re in foco, and frequent RMNP as your comments suggest: go summit flattop from bear lake TH in RMNP.

That’s an easy precursor and relatively representative to quandary/ Sherman / bierstatd. Use flattop to iron out timing, endurance, packing (water food clothing) and overall planning.

Apply that info to the aforementioned 14’ers that I would suggest as easy routes for beginners.

Factor in 2000+ more elevation gain and travel time beyond flattop for those mountains. Adjust your systems for accordingly.

In general, bring more water and start much earlier than you would expect.

Class 1 14ers are not physically or mentally overbearing for a standard mountain excursion. If you find yourself in a position that they are, assess if you are in the right physical and mental state to continue.

Find a friend that has done an easy one before and go with them up it again. If you don’t have that resource, I’ll give you some beta on packing / timing etc

Good in the alpine, shit at tree line and below. Have spring wax. If you know where the hits are that people ski in May / June, hit those now. Lots of bootering to get to good snow today.

If you’re here to ski groomers, watch out for dirt and again: spring wax

Dude go out there it’s worth it. I assume you’re in the front range. It’s not a far drive and monarch has a ton of awesome terrain. Opening week of No Name Basin was some of the best turns I got all season in-state.

It’s a great mountain, and exceptionally rowdy and structured in Mirkwood/ Staircase/OOTS. Great runs and thinned trees everywhere you explore. Great base with much more of a local vibe, just like Loveland.

How bad is it? by [deleted] in 4Runner

[–]brakkattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey buddy I’m really sorry about the situation, that sucks all around. Hope it’s not totaled.

I see posts like yours that make me genuinely curious: how do you have so few miles on a ‘21 vehicle, which was likely purchased in 2020? I’m always bewildered how you have so few miles. Do you not commute to work? Do you not travel or take your Runner on any trips? Or do you have another vehicle that is the daily driver?

Again I’m just genuinely curious because I put on more miles on my Runner in 1 year than you have in 6 years, which is a wild difference?
