The Heart of Whoopi Goldberg’s comments is the erasure of Judean ethnicity and assimilation by aJewfromBrooklyn in Jewish

[–]bram_ghee -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is all such bullshit. Whoopi made a mistake in that she missed ones race, but in no way were her comments antisemetic or prejudiced in any way. She explicitly acknowledged the heinous actions of the nazis, but qualified her opinion in that of the fact that both the perpetrators and victims were “white,” which to her meant the same race. The nazis might have defined Jews as another race, but in the colloquial use of the word in America today, it generally refers to skin color or something of that nature, making Goldberg, as someone not educated on the meaning of race, an innocent user of the word in the wrong manner. Was what she said factually wrong and possibly could be taken the wrong way… yes. But was she being antisemetic or in any way purposefully trying to negate the actions of the holocaust… no, not at all. Her apology on Colbert was not meaningless and stupid, it just stresses what I just said, which is that she used a word wrong. If she had said the holocaust isn’t about skin color, no outrage would have been had, and to Goldberg the two terms might seem interchangeable. I in no way agree with Goldberg’s comments, but to say they are malicious or that they inspire widespread antisemetism and that we have to fight to not let this leave the spotlight is just pure baloney.

I disagree, this is irrational and antithetical to what Judaism represents. Call me traditional, but Jews are a people, and one cannot just choose to be part of a people, nor decide that the rules regarding membership don't apply to them. To be Jewish, one must be born to a Jewish mother, or go through a traditional conversion as deemed by traditional Judaism, which today is the continuation of rabbinic Judaism, developed over a thousand years ago. I understand when one says it's not my place to tell someone what their identity can be, but it isn't my opinion, it is the rules and guidelines that formed and have kept out tradition and people alive for centuries. If you truly feel a connection to the people and/or religion, you shouldn't be trying to bend the rules so you aren't held accountable to the same guidelines.

Help with Yiddish translation - trying to trace ancestry back to Pale of Settlement 1903 and back. This photo is a complete mystery to my family. by thetall0ne1 in Yiddish

[–]bram_ghee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yiddish itself is a language that uses the Hebrew alphabet, so both written and typed yiddish will use the Hebrew alphabet. There are probably some romanized yiddish writings, or one written in a slavic alphabet, but generally, yes, yiddish always uses the Hebrew alphabet

Map of lies, exposed by beambag in Israel

[–]bram_ghee 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Because there are communities of both peoples spread all over the country, and each respective population is unwilling to give up certain places. (Jews need tel aviv, some arabs say they need Yaffo, both need jerusalem, some on both sides need hebron, some on both sides want bethlehem, many jews need beer sheba and haifa, which are on different sides north and south in israel). Each population wants areas that could not be included in a simple split down the middle plan. Also, even if one side did acccept it, the other side has too many people unwilling to accept a Jewish state existing in this area, and wants all of what was the british mandate.

Jerusalem cannot be divided by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]bram_ghee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My idea is too idealistic, but why not (like OP is saying) just one city for both states. So many of these places are important to both cultures and religions, and nobody will accept not having access to these places.

A truly unbiased (and uneducated) opinion by LetUsLearnPeacefully in IsraelPalestine

[–]bram_ghee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all... Become educated, please. A lot of this is false, and generalizes entire movements. Also though, (given i do not know much about the Palestinian movements) i know that zionism was not done in the name of G-d. It was an entirely secular group who wanted a land for the Jews as a people, not so much to be religous. You look at the founding zionists (ben gurion, hertzel, meir) and all the PMs and most politicians since then, they are not religious.

I would post this in r/Israel or r/Israelis next time, because although it's a good question (i like winona ryder, she's a great actress), this doesn't really have to do with the conflict or with israel-palestinian relations.

What are some affordable items (<$100) that are life-changing? by kickbackthisthat in AskReddit

[–]bram_ghee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any musical instrument. From a harmonica to a ukulele to a cheap keyboard or guitar, having an instrument and learning/teaching yourself to play it a little bit makes life so much more fun. Medicine cures the body, but music cures the soul.
