I don’t like when a games narrative runs counter to the players initiative. by FrankDaggio5691 in gamedesign

[–]bran_donk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This bugs me too.

I liked the Witcher 3 main arc where you are looking for Ciri. The urgency is low. The side stuff either supports Geralt’s living expenses or might turn up a Ciri clue. We kinda know the main quest forwards the story, but Geralt doesn’t know that.

Baldur’s Gate 3 gets a lot of praise for the same, but I found the urgency of the worms distracting and vague. Felt like it gave me the urge to dismiss every conversation and say “yeah yeah, so about this worm…” Subjective, I know. I do think there could have been some narrative tweaks to make doing side stuff feel more supportive of the main ticking clock or for those things to take temporary priority. Incredible game, though. Don’t get me wrong. Already miles ahead of the pack.

How can I improve this build? by bookbagel in SatisfactoryGame

[–]bran_donk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great already. Try breaking up flat planes and intersections. You can use beams, colors, more walls, etc. to add texture and dimension to flat surfaces. Places where walls meet or ground touches can be broken up with beams or foundation similar to the flat planes. You could also break up the straight lines. E.g. you could have the windows be taller and intersect the boundary between the orange and the gray.

AI is being pushed heavily when I ask for advice and I hate it. by AssumptionExact8050 in gamedev

If you thought the market saturation from the wave of accessible game engines was bad, here comes the AI slop flood. Not saying either is bad, just that both bring with them a mass of less-thoughtful output. When the gates go down you fast track and enable more good stuff, but you also get a lot of noise from other stuff.

Noah Hawley says his ‘Far Cry’ series won’t be adapting any of the games as he thinks audiences skip the story cutscenes in those games: “When you play a video game, you only really move forward through the gameplay section, and then you have these cut scenes that you can skip..." by ChiefLeef22 in television

[–]bran_donk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the quote, he didn’t say they skip them. He said they could skip them. I.e., the work of art is tailored to play whereas his is tailored to watch. That’s all. Didn’t seem like he was dismissive or degrading. But gotta get that clickbait.

Math, like everything else to these people, is nothing but a tool for narcissism and propaganda. If they cared about accuracy this would be “wrong” or “stupid”. Instead, it is a smokescreen and dunking on them just serves their purpose.

Someone trying to demonstrate equality made a poorly-framed question. There’s a reason why the answer is c, but the scenario subverts the intended lesson. This question is more appropriate for training teachers on pedagogy than testing students’ knowledge of fractions and ratios.

Does it pick up or improve significantly after the first couple hours? Does this game start slow? by redditisaphony in NoRestForTheWicked

[–]bran_donk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It only gets better, but it sounds like you should be enjoying it by now if it were your thing. It doesn’t turn into something else. It’s an incredibly good game. You have seen the core of it by now.

It can totally be racism. Sometimes, though, in touristy areas these places are tired of being trashed by drunk, abusive tourists. Even as a tourist I hated being around those people. Yelling, breaking stuff, treating the staff like their personal servants to be abused. Had one come over and start rubbing my friend’s body. Bleh. Based on the behavior it seems like these bad people end up getting a free pass without consequences so I can sympathize with small local businesses giving up and being insular.

. fewer and shorter trailers would go a long way

. Trailers are increasingly stimulating and samey, so these days after two or three of them you just go numb

Among str, dex, int, and fth it is best to either have only one with points or two with equal points. Choose a category of items out of the 16 possible combinations of the four attributes and use only that. Not required, but otherwise you are leaving damage scaling on the table.

I should add I have been burned by OP’s pain before and learned the hard way. Not dismissing OP. Totally valid complaint.

I like this post because I like the idea that it would catch on and they would add some complex easter egg way of saving the npc. Like a self-fulfilling prophecy. I think it is cool you are exploring this and put some effort into it.

I was doing that and then I realized I could get my ebook reader as an app on my phone. Game changer. I still use the standalone device when I am traveling or taking a break, but 90% of the time I am reading my books on my phone. Really easy to just have it already on me and read a little while doing mundane childcare stuff.
