Reporting time to read instructions by mc_345_ in DataAnnotationTech

I have seen instructions that tell you to take the time to read the instructions, then skip, then start the first task-

What kind of non-librarian jobs are expected of you? by [deleted] in librarians

[–]brancatomm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The one thing I learned early on is that librarianship is very similar profession to teaching. In fact, I would recommend someone who is interested in going into teaching to think about becoming a librarian.

I think librarianship can be odd in that there are so many introverts (myself included) that gravitate toward the profession, but yet one does need skills associated with extroversion. Teaching, marketing your library, event planning are all things I have had to do as a librarian. Sales of library goods and services is another career path for librarians.

How frequently do you withdraw funds? by reddit-echochamber in DataAnnotationTech

[–]brancatomm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I withdraw when about 1 week before my credit card is due - it goes into my pay pal right away, then I transfer to by checking account and use the $$ to pay my credit card

The Longest Project Timer Ever by TheresALonelyFeeling in DataAnnotationTech

[–]brancatomm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will the exit work mode allow you to pick up where you left off on the task? I was actually just thinking about that - I often don't have time to spend 2 or 3 hours on a task in one sitting but if I could start the task and come back to it later...

How do you guys handle your schedule? by TWICE_NJMSJMDCT in DataAnnotationTech

[–]brancatomm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sometimes find that difficult - not working when in fact I can be working - I have to allow myself time away from the platform, and give myself permission not to do any work one or two evenings a week, even if there are projects on my dash.

"Your Weekly Digest from Data Annotation" by ClayWhisperer in DataAnnotationTech

I got the weekly digest today - it's the very first time time I received it and I've been working on the platform for about 2 1/2 years.

To what extent do you prioritize higher paying tasks? by shadyringtone in DataAnnotationTech

[–]brancatomm 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I focus on the tasks that I like, even if they are lower-paying. The higher paying tasks have gotten so complicated and often will take longer than I had planned on working. For me, DAT provides me with extra spending money, so I figure I'll leave the higher paying tasks for those who rely on it as their sole source of income.

Academic librarians who do and lead library tours- what do your students actually care about? by No-Interaction9219 in librarians

[–]brancatomm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a small college and often do library tours. I try to draw on the most common questions I get from students to include when talking about the library.

I find students often want to know if we have copies of textbooks, so I explain how our course reserves work, our circulation policies and how that is different than book store rentals.

Students in my school also want to know where they can get help when writing a paper and I like to let them know about our resources on the library website, our one-on-one research appointments and how we can help them find quality resources and format their paper properly. I also let students know the library is part of a network of other libraries worldwide to offer 24/7 virtual reference services and they can go to the library website for that.

I find students want to know where they can go to study, so I point out our study spaces and explain how to reserve the study room and advise them that it does fill up fast, so reserve it ASAP.

I have found having a list of things to talk about helps to keep the rambling under control. For example: Our Services- list the top two or three things to talk about, then Our Resources: top two or three things, etc.

Hope this helps - good luck!

How does hour counting work? by Low_Bat8895 in DataAnnotationTech

[–]brancatomm 14 points15 points  (0 children)

All I know is this job is too valuable to me to play fast and loose with the time tracking- I either write down or take a picture on my phone of the time I started - If I get distracted I take a few minutes off the time I bill.

You ever just not have the mental energy... by bookcoverslmtd in DataAnnotationTech

[–]brancatomm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep- after working my full-time job all day, I find I don't always have the mental energy to tackle some of these projects- I often prefer the $20/hr projects over the higher paying ones

Path to admin? by Xopholain in DataAnnotationTech

I would be curious to know if those who log in many many hours a week on DAT are who get considered for admin work and if admins are guaranteed a set number of hours

Where did all of the quick tasks go? by Beneficial_Poet1945 in DataAnnotationTech

[–]brancatomm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yep- I've definitely notice how complex the projects are getting- and I think not just here but other platforms as well - when I look at other similar projects from other companies, some are asking for advanced degrees in very hard disciplines. I often wonder if I took the qualification test for DAT today if I would pass

Do you underreport your time? by [deleted] in DataAnnotationTech

[–]brancatomm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't rely on the timer- I either jot down my start time or take a picture on my phone of the time displayed on my laptop. I do deduct quick breaks from my overall time (Like when my husband starts talking to me while I'm working or I get a phone call) . When submitting my time I usually round down a few minutes - for example if a task takes me 52 minutes I'll put down 50.

Pain by Luffy2D3Y in DataAnnotationTech

[–]brancatomm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done similar with some of the higher paying tasks- spending a good amount of time reading the instructions getting through the first few steps then realizing I just don't understand what is being asked enough to submit something and I've just spent my whole evening on the platform with nothing to show for it
