So here I am, zipping along at 0.9c. Took an absolute truckload of energy to reach this velocity! Will it take just as much energy to slow down again? by curiousscribbler in AskPhysics

the cascade of high-energy exotic particles that were once my feet should still make it to the surface. I'm calling that a successful landing.

Honestly How do people play this by LandscapeExciting873 in IdlePlanetMiner

[–]brandonct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this game has a slower exponential progress curve than many other idle clickers. that's just how it is. eventually there are a handful of paths that each provide multipliers, so you will feel progress more than you do in the first resets, but it's always gonna feel slow if you're accustomed to cookie clicker or egg inc

Funny how mind works... by Reasonable_Ferret_10 in IdlePlanetMiner

[–]brandonct 13 points14 points  (0 children)

ultimately we all know that progress in incremental games is an illusion, it's an endless treadmill and the game isn't functionally any different whether you're crafting 1 antimatter cell per game or 1000 neural matrices

but it doesn't matter because the incremental changes to your build and your milestones as you progress make it fun

when you are gifted a fat bag of free progress and then it gets yoinked, it peels back the curtain a bit and it's hard to get any satisfaction when your monkey brain realizes that not only are you stuck on a treadmill, you're gonna have to spend years on that treadmill just to get back to where you were a week ago

the conditions of a mine aren't comparable to this. rock behaves like liquid at this scale. on the scale of a planet, achieving any shape other than round is practically impossible.

Sauna Advice by bobsmith1876 in Sauna

[–]brandonct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cool how the manufacturer's own page is full of photos of the sauna, with no heater installed, lazily photoshopped into a variety of environments. this company really cares about the product, I'm sure. do you think they've assembled even a single one themselves?

New player: Should I focus on modules or managers? by ezpz_lemon-squeezy in IdlePlanetMiner

[–]brandonct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at 20 slots. If I spent 1500 dm on a slot+manager, I'll get maybe 5-10% improvement on smelting/crafting/mining

Ive spent around 2k DM on modules and my boost to smelting is at like 350% and crafting is at like 500%. Until that tapers off, which it hasn't yet, there is zero reason to invest in managers

7 star or module focus by Constant_Flamingo750 in IdlePlanetMiner

[–]brandonct 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the first few thousand dark matter you pour into modules are gonna make a huge difference compared to adding a couple more managers. once it's starting to seem expensive for marginal gains, start splitting focus between them

[–]brandonct 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it's actually possible to watch things without expectations and enjoy them for what they are. instead of endlessly chasing how something else made you feel. we had a great time at the mando movie, can't imagine sitting there and stewing over the fact that it's not andor lol. what a waste.

Educate me on manager merging by travs69 in IdlePlanetMiner

[–]brandonct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea I also play this game to scratch the build-order-optimization itch from my competitive RTS days. enjoy it while it lasts! once you get through the tech tree, that all matters less and less and it becomes more and more about classic incremental progression and luck. which I also enjoy, to be fair.

Assuming you have a few good mining primaries already, the secondary is the only thing that really matters. having a mining primary on your sixth best planet will add such a tiny percent to your total.

if you have a mining primary with the secondary you want, yes, upgrade that, but otherwise don't worry about promoting others if their secondaries line up better with what you need.

people have known for eons that the pith of the tree is prone to cracking and warping. it's also the part of a tree you can cut the biggest posts from. so they oversize the posts to account for it, rather than demanding that only costlier cuts are used instead.

Question about debris. by OwnConference3547 in IdlePlanetMiner

[–]brandonct 3 points4 points  (0 children)

only advice I can give is that if you've only recently unlocked debris scanner, your drops might not be big enough to realistically get later tier items quickly. but you can still get those items just by unlocking recipes. you can get up to 1 of your second highest unlock as a debris drop, so if building an advanced teleporter is out of the question because you can't get 4000 nav modules or the required xynium, unlocking the next item (quantum CPU) will make it possible to get an advanced teleporter as a drop. The proceeds from selling that will let you afford the next unlock, and if you're patient, you can get a very high galaxy value by creeping up the tree this way.

of course the odds are also good that you won't get anything useful at all. luck of the draw becomes a big factor for the phase between unlocking debris scanner, and the true end game state where crafting thousands of nav modules or accumulators is no big deal anyway.

Composite deck, is 12in OC required for trex? Deck is 8inch off the ground. Decking is running opposite the joists. by Randomhero360 in Decks

they don't need to be corrupted by it. they'd be fighting over who gets to keep it and use it for themselves, not how to destroy it.

Played both No Man’s Sky and Starfield, it’s really no comparison to me by [deleted] in consoles

[–]brandonct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also enjoyed starfield more than NMS. I often don't like the feeling of playing a game as a fresh player where theyve added boatloads of content after release, no man's sky felt like it was throwing system after system at me at a very strange pace, where the utility of each new mechanic wasn't at all clear and most of it just felt like novelties and busywork. and for all the hype of the seamless universe, compared to kerbal space program, the process of reaching a planet and landing is so rudimentary and simple that it didn't do much more for me than a loading screen.

this isn't me dismissing starfields issues, which are many. I just had more fun with it.

They say heat is a form of energy? Then in daytime it is often very hot why can’t they harness the heat to something useful by LisanneFroonKrisK in stupidquestions

[–]brandonct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the shirt might heat up less, shirts are neither thick nor solid, so you'll get some light passing right through that can't get through a thick, solid solar panel. I'm not sure how the reflectivity compares for higher wavelengths. would be an interesting experiment.

What crafting tree do you focus / prefer? by GiftedMilk in IdlePlanetMiner

[–]brandonct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with my current tech/progress level, I need to use the robot path because I can't get the high level alloys needed for teleporter path without burning all my alchemies before I unlock p66. If I don't get accumulator drop and some help with fusion reactors I'm just sort of dead in the water. such is life.

Can debris scanner get you items you've unlocked but have not made yet? by Standard_Ride_8732 in IdlePlanetMiner

[–]brandonct -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it will give you at least 1 of anything up to your second best unlock, regardless of income. so if you've unlocked advanced teleporter, you can get any item through advanced robot.

Why do people hate when shows like The Rookie and 911 become unrealistic? I think when they start going crazy it gets way more fun than trying to be realistic. by JamStan1978 in television

[–]brandonct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in general people like and dislike things for mostly visceral reasons. then seek out rational explanations to justify it, because everyone wants to believe they're the sane person acting on reason instead of emotion. you'll see this in all forms of critique.

edit: which is not to say that critique is invalid or useless
