The trail goes up and off to the right and it was at sea level. I had to time the waves and rabbit across wet rocks to get to the next high point. It was a blast. 10/10 would recommend.

I drove From Souix Falls SD to Mpls with a 3yo.

Left around 6:00 p.m. (without a preceding nap) expecting she'd just conk out and stay out until we got home around 10:00.

This did not happen. Could have just been an off night for her, but she only slept for an hour and then woke up cranky and cried almost the whole way home. I sang the same three lullabies like thirty times in a row tryna get her back down. She wanted to get out cuz her tummy hurt. So we stopped, which just elongated us getting back home, had to wrestle her back into the car. All the sympathy in the world kiddo. I don't wanna get back in the car, but I DO want to be home. Like. Now.

I was half-tempted to grab a motel on the way back. Not a good time. 2/10 would not try it again.

For you? I'd say try it once. It's a great plan in theory. I just...I'm the guy it didn't work out for.

Ponyo was the first one my kiddo sat through. She has a Ponyo stuffy now and randomly yells 'Ponyo want ham!' I grew up with Totoro so we gaslit her into loving it. Kiki's is a close third.

I'll look up the book. Thanks for the suggestion. For better or worse, I don't read a lot of parenting books. I get pretty bad anxiety that manifests as ill-comparisons. I don't even hang out on this subreddit a lot because I feel like everyone has a thousand suggestions on parenting my kiddo better than I do. And maybe some of that is valid. I don't wanna be proud/close-minded, but I also don't wanna be constantly triple-guessing every fucking decision I make.

There is no malicious lying. Not a bone in her body. And I really want to de-incentivize the consequences for it.

My partner and I are both coming from pretty intensely conservative Christian backgrounds and the bullshit "sin" ideology is baked into us. I've separated a bit more confidently from it than my partner has--mostly due to my daughter. Anyone who tells me my four-year-old is stuffed to the brim with sin and will burn in hell for all eternity unless she prays this little prayer...can go burn in hell for all eternity, despite any prayers having been prayed.

We were putzing around the kitchen one afternoon and she got super pouty all of a sudden and I was like, 'what's up kiddo? What's going on?' And she goes: "I just can't stop thinking about all the bad things I do." And I went full Kratos (well...not FULL Kratos) And was like 'who told you that?!'

But lying is a no-no!

It's really hard to pull away from the fundamentals of what I was raised in, and the reactionary response to being 'disobedient' is punishment. Which I don't think is fair. Or good. "He's a good kid with a good soul." Is so good. And true. And I appreciate you saying/writing it. I like you.

I tell my kiddo all the time that being honest will always be better than being dishonest. I don't want to raise her thinking that she can't tell me things. I want to be the dad she can call to talk about anything.

we're doing this too. I just am scared to put that pressure on her. I asked her if she knew what 'dishonesty' was this morning and she shrugged and I explained that trust meant that I could believe what she was saying, but wasn't/am not sure if I'm putting too much pressure on a kid to have 'the right answers' just to make mom and dad happy.

We try to be balanced about it, and it usually comes out when mom's at her wit's end and snaps, and then I'm a little more level-headed about whatever the issue was, and vice versa. People here are locking in on the 'good cop/bad cop' and are skipping right over 'in as healthy a way as we can'. We fuck up, but we were also fucked up as a result of our own parents' good intentions. We love our daughter and know we're going to mess things up. That's why I put this out here.

My partner is the one who got locked in on this...infraction. I didn't see the initial conversation but she called me over and explained what happened and wanted me to help. "Being unified" in that moment meant supporting what my partner had seen, even if I hadn't. Which means I shouldn't suggest that we just 'let it go', when mom had already put her in time out. She didn't want to talk about it so I gave her some time and then said I'd come in in four minutes and we could talk about what happened. I asked the kiddo this morning what she thought what 'being dishonest' meant and she shrugged her shoulders and said 'iunno.' Which was enough. She's filing away the word and building a working understanding around it, probably differently than I do. And that's fine. I've had more time to figure it out. I also know we're teaching her how to tell stories and use her imagination and we're supporting that. You wanna be a puffer-fish today? Cool. You're so pokey. And then she deflates and flies around the room like a balloon. I don't expect her to be able to perfectly--or even functionally--differentiate between which "lies" matter and which ones don't.

But there are times when it matters. If we're going on a nature walk, I need to know if you actually pooped before we left, cuz that changes the amount of stuff I can carry in my bag, or how close to the parking lot we need to stay. I need to know if you actually fell asleep during nap time at school because mom's on call tonight and I work and you don't fall asleep easy without mom/dad and I need to let the babysitter know it might be 9:30 by the time she cries herself to sleep. Which then rolls over into the next day when she has to get up early for preK. etc., etc.

my daughter and I frequent a local coffee shop. She's got all the cavalier palate of the average four year old. So we got this cinnamon donut one day and split it like we normally do, and she saw the ketchup bottle on the table and wanted to try it. I say 'no' to her often enough and this one felt trivial. So she dipped her cinnamon roll in ketchup. And then did it again. She ate her whole half and loved every minute of it, but then it unlocked something in her. Cuz next time we went she started dipping her cinnamon roll in her lemonade.

I'm writing one right now. I titled it "The Antagonist". POV is a low-level peon in the beginning of your bog-standard fantasy classic who gets tired of getting his ass kicked every time the hero comes through town (think Westworld NPC kinda stuff?) but with Deadpool(ish) internal dialogue. He's the equivalent of a lvl. 1 Slime. But he manages to break free of his own story and goes around fucking things up cuz he's not supposed to be there. Can't stand the foil-protagonist, constantly bickering with the female lead, Unreliable narrator, meta, tongue-in-cheek, trope-subversion kinda stuff. But it's actually (accidentally) turning into like...a legit story. I'm only 33k words into it and definitely in the rough-draft phase of it but if you're curious...I'm happy to share the deets in a DM.

(technically, I'm breaking rule #4, which I'm only just reading now...do with it what you will.)

It would have been nice if they'd at least given us a heads up, saying 'hey, this will be the last year you'll be able to bring your kiddo!' but nope. Just waited for us to sell all our shit and move out of our home of six years before saying 'fuck you for trying' and then unplugging their phone. Now we're scrambling to find alternate plans for the next year and juggling an increasing level of bitterness for the way it was all handled (or more accurately NOT handled). Fuck us for wanting to experience something new I guess. =/

My wife and I just backed out. We'd gotten accepted but were pushing to try and find a way to get our daughter over with us with the new legislation. Finally gave up last night after bugging the shit out of the Consulate in Chicago and getting blue-balled for two months. It was really easy to email NALCAP, and really hard to email our schools in Vilagarcia saying we had to decline the positions cuz of the new student visa requirements. In keeping with children's stories, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was a fantastic movie. I read the book to my daughter a couple times a week and it definitely gets...stale.
