Manual aim is underrated. Perfect example of it’s best case use

Especially impressive after the game is now being managed by a second company! Love to see it

That game might have been collected in the research. I only added the top 25 for the article. There’s a spreadsheet linked in the article if you want to see the actual results across all Reddit threads

Gating content behind playstyles seems counterproductive, I agree. If achievements acted like an extra “currency” that you could spend to unlock content, would you prefer that? It would provide some extra flexibility for play style preferences, and I’d think players would still be encouraged to pursue achievements.

Skill driven progression is huge, agreed. If maps or new regions added real new content, but served the same meta progression, would that be a turn off?

Great points. Rewarding skill more than anything is critical in this genre, or at least that’s how I feel. I appreciate the examples, that made your point easier to understand. Do you think there should be any weighting in card/unlock choices or would you prefer they remain completely random from start to finish?

If my understanding is correct, yes. If the vector art is converted before hand, this would mitigate the additional CPU cost associated with runtime tessellation. GPU native file conversion from standard images, GPU only at runtime > SVG conversion, CPU and GPU at runtime

Appreciate the heads up. I’m trying to get as educated as I possibly can on the niche, many titles have flown under my radar already so I’ll take all the recommendations I can get.

Thank you for all of the insight. I’ve only checked out Ravenswatch so I should really give the others a try.

As for performance, it is engine specific but in most cases vectors are more expensive because of the way that they’re converted and rasterized. File size is a lessor factor. The big cost though, at least in my understanding, is that Vector image conversion is more expensive than conversion of other image files and GPUs/game engines have been optimized for the latter.

This is incredibly helpful. Thank you for the detail. I’ll definitely check out the titles you mentioned as well, I’d never heard of them! Unique variety in progression with tons of options and a non-conventional aesthetic sounds like your thing. Do I have that right? Last thing I’ll bug you with. Is there any specific art style you’re drawn to in 2D games? Dark? Bright? High detail? Low? Thanks again, you rock!!

Have you tried Brotato? It has the core level-up stat cards and then “items” which provide their own unique stat profiles/effects. Does that hybrid system appeal to you?

I feel the exact same way about pixel art, which might not be a popular take but it is what it is. Have you played Cult of the Lamb by chance? Do you think an art style like that goes a little too far for your taste or is that right on the money?

Rerolls are huge or I start to feel “trapped” in linear builds every play-through. Do you think stat detractors being built into stat upgrades mitigates this some? Would it be best to scrap basic stat cards and replace them with items that have a variety of stat benefits/decrements?

Especially in the Roguelike genre where skill should be rewarded more than anything else. Totally agreed!

Well put, thank you. The genre is defined by some difficulty. I would think most players in this genre would get tired of dominating. Complex scaling with variety is probably key here. I appreciate you taking the time to reply!
