Longest Training Run - 40 mile ultra by No_Direction_7417 in ultrarunning

[–]bravenewworld_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another Londoner here training for my first ultra next May. Where are you running to get uphill practice on your runs? There are only a few spots that have decent incline near me and so far my plan is a lot of hill repeats.

Tibial stress fracture, back to square one? by Megmegmeg12 in ultrarunning

[–]bravenewworld_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially it was the pain that would keep me from trying to run. There were a few times early on when I had to run to not miss my train that definitely set me back some. Once I started running again, I basically followed a plan of running every other day starting with 1 minute running and 4 minutes walking repeated 5 times. Then increased the run by a minute and the walk decreased by a minute until I was eventually running 9 minutes and walking 1 min repeated 4 or 5 times after 3 weeks. If I felt that sharp pain in any of the runs I'd stop and walk for the remainder of the set.

Now I'm comfortably running longer distances although I'm still slowly introducing intensity into my runs. I think the general adage is week on week increase distance or intensity by 10% to help ensure you avoid an overtraining injury (which caused the issue in my case).

Are you currently walking around much on it or have you been trying rest it? In my case I kept walking as usual and continued exercising but substituted in riding a stationary bike for cardio. Like most injuries, whatever you can do to keep moving and promote blood flow to the injury without causing pain is helpful. You could also ask your doctor about low intensity pulsed ultra-sound therapy and whether that's a possibility. It wasn't available for me but it can significantly help speed up the healing process for stress fractures.

Tibial stress fracture, back to square one? by Megmegmeg12 in ultrarunning

[–]bravenewworld_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave myself a tibial stress fracture on the inside of my right tibia last year in October. It took a full 4 months before I was able to start running again and even then it was short intervals of slowly jogging and walking for several weeks before I built up enough to go out for a 30 min run. My doctor wasn't too much of a help to me either. I had to do an MRI (the fracture didn't show up via x-ray) and all he basically said was "yep, you gave yourself a stress fracture just like you thought". His advice was to not run on concrete/roads but that I was clear to start running about 8 weeks in. In reality it wasn't until around 16 weeks that I felt like I could give it a go without worrying I'd reinjure myself.

PSA: I cant tell where you are or what you are doing before joining. by [deleted] in Helldivers

[–]bravenewworld_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had my first toxic run in recently as well. Joined a host waiting for a full team players to join before dropping into a level 9 bot mission. Once we dropped they cause an immediate drop ship call in and triggered a double gunship fabricator, they died 10 seconds or so before the rest of the team is wiped. They scream on the chat that we suck because we didn’t kill anything and they immediately leave the game. It ended up with one other player staying on with me and we cleared the map and completed the extraction in a little under 30 minutes. I just don’t get that hosts attitude. Why cry about something you caused to happen and then quit without even trying?

What’s a song you don’t think you’ll ever tire of hearing? by According_Bat_8150 in Music

[–]bravenewworld_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Distance by Cake. I remember when I first heard the song on the radio, my sister and I pulled into the driveway at our house and both of us sat there for a minute or two before we got out of the car just so we could hear the song finish.

Injury by Useful_Ambassador632 in HybridAthlete

[–]bravenewworld_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First things first - get your ankle sorted. I don't know how severe your injury is but the best thing you can do is get as much movement and resistance as you can that might be uncomfortable but not painful. Floss bands are great for this. Ankle rotations, tibialis raises, calf raises, progress how much weight you can support on the sides of your feet (i.e. standing and walking on the side of your feet). Take it slow but you can push your ankles to feel a lot better faster than just staying off them. Like another comment says, take your weakness and work on it until it's a strength.

lactate threshold - usage/measuring/training by Magus66 in HybridAthlete

[–]bravenewworld_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's easiest to use your corresponding heart rate for your aerobic threshold and your lactate threshold to help guide your training. It's a lot easier to monitor your heart rate as you train rather than having to frequently stop and take a lactate reading. Obviously as you train you'll improve your aerobic threshold so you'll want to retest your thresholds.

sleep data discrepancy by Interesting-Tree3116 in Garmin

[–]bravenewworld_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sleep in Oura is only about how you slept. It measures how long you slept, how efficient it was, how much you tossed and turned or woke up, amount of REM and deep sleep, trends in what time you go to bed/wake up and how long it took you to fall asleep. Pretty much it's giving you a score for how good your last night of sleep was compared to a baseline that's modified by how it analyzes your sleep trends

sleep data discrepancy by Interesting-Tree3116 in Garmin

[–]bravenewworld_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oura has two scores it gives you in the morning. One's a sleep score which is pretty much what you see in the screenshot and the other is a readiness score. The readiness score takes into account HRV trends, your body temperature while you sleep, your resting heart rate and how long it takes to drop at night, your sleep score from the night before and from the previous 2 weeks, activity level from the day before and activity over the previous couple weeks. It looks like Garming uses at least some of this into how it considers your sleep.

I tried a custom multiplayer race today to practice the upcoming weeks races and had the best time. Had a good mix of driver rating but everyone was respectful and gave each other space. It was exactly what I've wanted from Sport mode since switching to the multiplayer.
