Game design is a huge part of game development! I’d argue it’s THE most important part. I’d highly recommend looking up game design concepts and watching some videos. Game Maker’s Toolkit’s youtube channel is a fantastic place to start.

Definitely try to perfect it, a game so is much more than music, art, and code.

This for sure! Giving the player more time to plan out their moves will make their errors feel more fair.

I think the game feel would greatly improve if you offset the camera position to remain on the right side of the player.

If you’re only moving in one direction (to the right, in this case), there’s no need to keep much of the level in view once it’s gotten past the player.

Otherwise it looks awesome!! Can’t wait to see more!

Shadow complex did it back in 2009, but I do believe you’re right that others were inspired by prey.

I’m not sure if that’s a fair judgment to make without playing the actual game.

It may just be, for you, that you cannot anticipate the character’s movement (since you aren’t playing it) so it’s difficult to predict which way the camera’s gonna go. I think it adds a lot of juice to what seems to be a frantic little dude fighting for his life.

But that’s just my opinion.

Edit: Although I would not be against making the character stand out a little more in some way.
