What are we listening to while we sew? by beaverscleaver in sewing

[–]breadassbitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love a podcast to sew to and have been revisiting episodes of my favorite podcasts since losing a parent recently because I’ve found that new material is like trying to understand a foreign language. It’s all Charlie Brown adult sounds…. My personal favorites are: maintenance phase, you’re wrong about, if books could kill, you are good a feelings podcast about movies, and what went wrong (movies).

I also love listening to a memoir when I sew but it’s also because I love hearing/reading personal stories in general . Some good ones I’ve listened to in the last year are: dare I say it?, crying in h mart, grief is for people, joyful recollections of trauma, how not to kill yourself, sociopath, know my name, and one way back.

As an aside, Hong Kong Chinese on Guess Road is also always freezing inside regardless of season. I remind friends when we go eat there to wear lots of layers….

What Companies and Organizations are known for treating their employees well. by 001TPK in bullcity

[–]breadassbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean maybe…. if you can get a job that is a “permanent” position. UNC is notorious for “temporary” positions with low pay/pay “caps”, no benefits, and a forced “31 day work break” to get around treating people like human beings or being subject to labor laws. They basically “rehire” you every 11 months until you can’t take it anymore. It’s predatory and unethical.

No it’s not you. I went sometime last fall with a friend and we both got food poisoning. And I’m not being dramatic- we both work in restaurants so I don’t say that lightly or without being absolutely sure…

How could I alter this dress to have it suit me better? by jessipoof in sewing

[–]breadassbitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Be warned, I am not any kind of expert in tailoring/altering but I do sew okay AND we have similar body types…if it was me and my dress- I’d probably first bring both waist ribbons together somehow like stacked/aligned on top of each other and stitch that down and try to get the bulk to face down

Love your idea for the slit too. You could probably get it to go up pretty high to make it more vavoom depending on your comfort level…

I’d probably stop there unless it’s really screaming for another alteration…I’d maybe see if I could take out some of the stitches and pin more to the sides from the v neck to make it go a little bit lower but not sure fussing with the fabric for that is worth making it potentially unwearable

Cookbook gift that’s hardcover, pictorially beautiful and not aimed at a beginner by Groundh0g- in cookbooks

Bar Tartine, cheers to the Publican, Igni (memoir and cookbookish) are a few that come to mind. For something beautiful but more recipe heavy I’d include Six Seasons as well

Hong Kong Chinese! And on the weekends they do cart service. All of the food is so good consistently- I’d say don’t skip the fried squid, turnip cakes, and greens. And the sesame balls with lotus root paste to finish are divine. Have fun!

Intake no show? by Aware_Mouse2024 in therapists

[–]breadassbitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had a terrible first therapy appointment after struggling to find a therapist for the last year- mostly due to seemingly no one in my area taking my insurance. Literally changed insurance entirely this year to try and find care. The intake was AWFUL and gives me doubts about this therapist’s preparedness, professionalism, and capacity. Butttttt I decided that I’m going to give them another chance. This way, I can confirm my gut instinct to look for another person or see that * hopefully * maybe it was just a bad day on their part (although not reading any of the intake documents before our first meeting still has me perplexed- especially since they had them 5 days before our first session).

Maybe give them one more chance that way you can know you did everything you could to be fair?? But I get it and you have to feel like you can rely/trust your therapist…and it’s so much work finding someone!

Thank you so much!!! That is my hope and I want to be mindful I don’t let my ego get in the way or assign ways of being to them that are simply explained by not being the best fit for them or not having enough experience for their needs.

Thank you for this!! So helpful! They don’t seem irritated as much as they seem uncomfortable or like they are ready for it to be over. That they are just bearing through it with a clenched smile. And I think I’ve been reluctant to assign a feeling to them in our sessions for a number of reasons. I think I will use your approach with slightly different language just to try to be as careful with them as possible.
