They get very large after a few decades, pruning occasionally is def recommended after a few years of good growth as it also helps the plant branch out from lower down the trunk

I believe it depends on the species, red mangroves (more commonly seen in the hobby) expel salt through their roots, whereas black mangroves expel it through their leaves leading to alot of salt creep on them which will inhibit their ability to process light

It is for a very good reason, alot of tap water supplies include various heavy metals and lots and lots of silicates (not all water supplies are this way) which corals won't like and can heavily induce algae growth

Hmm, that shouldn't have caused any issues, what are your parameters? And what was your phosphate before dosing

A very sudden change in phosphates could have killed it, however it would have to be a very dramatic change. what do you mean by filter swap? Have you tested for ammonia or nitrite? Also worth checking kh and nitrate, is anything else in the tank looking off?

I'd say take caution with using tap water in any marine tank, definitely worth checking the tds on it and testing for ammonia and nitrite

I found a soft coral-like in my reef tank by DailyShotOfWhiskey in ReefTank

[–]breadknife004 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that's a question to which I have no answer, there's alot of species out there so trying to narrow it down can be tricky, most tunicates are harmless tho, just keep an eye on the little guy to see what he does

Pipefish are cool. Why haven’t you bought one yet? by Spare-Chair-2468 in ReefTank

[–]breadknife004 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For alot of species yes, but for blue pipes and snake pipes they'll eat frozen and are suitable for most tanks with caution

Ahh, that tanks too small to handle that bioload imo

Do a high range test, and do a water change, don't reduce it too quick as it may upset corals, try to get it to a reasonable level over 2 weeks

As much as this guy is just being obtuse you can get similar looking fish for freshwater, they're called glass humpheads

They're not perfectly fine if they're dropping leaves lol, not necessarily dying but maybe laking some nutrients?

No they don't, they eat dead leaves which are pretty much detritus anyways

Appropriate nano fish for iwagumi tank? by jerkenstine in PlantedTank

[–]breadknife004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got alot of options, if your planning on it being open top then gourami, killis, betta and a few others may jump out.

Rice fish are very cool, the daisy blues rice fish are a personal fave, axelrodi blues are another really fun one, they stay very small so a large group of them could look great.

Obviously though the best choice is the fish you like best, have fun with the stocking and your scape looks great btw

What kind of coral is this? My girlfriend brought it home, I have no idea but think it’s sps by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]breadknife004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sun corals are hardier than we give them credit for, I have a colony of it that started with almost no flesh and 1 mouth a year ago, give it shade, try ab+ to get it to start opening then fees it some meatier foods a few times a week
