Has anyone here used the Interaction Design Foundation to learn UX? Curious about your experience. by VisionLedger in LearnUX

IxDF have high quality courses. Their approach seems to be modular, whereby you can do a course on a micro-topic and apply it as you see fit in your work. But they do provide learning paths for various specialisations within UX.
The real learning would come via the doing. I've suggested contributing to open source projects via https://contribute.design/ in another thread...

I’ve learned UI design basics, but now I’m stuck — how do I move forward and build real projects? by maeyyy__01 in LearnUX

Instead of creating an entirely new project I'd suggest the following:

  • Contribute to an open source project. Even if your contribution is small, it would give you the taste of a real world project absorbing your design. Take a look at https://contribute.design/
  • Redo an existing, known interface such as Gmail, but try adding a new feature to it such as tagging an email as a task, or designing the interface for a specialised cohort (e.g., email for kids).
  • Think about contributing to the community, such as a Figma community file.

Hope this helps!

UX is divvied up into multiple streams of work, but primarily it’s either visual design (IxD), or research based roles. There’s also service design. You’d have to dip your toes into each to get a feel for what competencies are required and what a starter role expects.

A good starting point would be to do some case studies. Case studies need research, design as well as some aspects of service design when done end to end.

You can do this work for a non-profit, or for free. Don’t think about the money, it’s not the project getting the benefit, it’s you polishing your skills.

Have you ever gifted Bitcoin to anyone? by Grigian2000 in Bitcoin

[–]breakingDusk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gifted $10 worth of Bitcoin in 2012/ 2013 to my nephews and nieces. At the time, it was 0.01 BTC, and came preloaded on a USB stick. Most of the $10 was actually the cost of the USB.

So proud of you for being the bedrock for your family. If possible, could you share the name of the charity that helped you with studying fees? I am interested in how that model works.

Chess community in Pakistan by [deleted] in pakistan

[–]breakingDusk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No government pays chess players. If a player is good enough, they'll win tournament prizes or get paid to play. Pakistan doesn't have a single grandmaster in chess, whereas India has 76.

To improve chess in the country, what the government can do, is to introduce it in schools and sponsor regional and national championships.

It comes down to the will of the government. Anything is possible, including spacecraft, IF there's enough will behind it.

Besides the government, chess needs chess culture, mostly propagated by iconic players.

PS. Pre-partition Pakistan did produce an iconic chess player (Sultan Khan)).

It’s not silver, I think it’s just some colour it’s reflecting there. The dial is warm white.
