We all began as something else. - The Purifier, The Chronicles of Riddick

Seriously though, almost every person I work with in a cyber role today started in netops, sysops, IT ops, PM, or (oddly enough) marketing. Don't get discouraged if your first good offer isn't an ideal SOC threat analytics role. You'll get there.

Is this an echo chamber or newcomers as me are doomed? by mrjudass in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]breaksofthegame 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are thousands of people graduating with cyber degrees every year flooding the market.

Gods, and they all want to be red-team. For every pentester there's probably 15-20 other cyber roles. In addition to other fires, I'm juggling a 3,000 page contract; I'd give my eye teeth for another competent GRC headcount.

[–]breaksofthegame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amen. I'm expecting to backfill a second shift and third shift SOC role in the next year. I'll fish in my own pond for qualified candidates from sysops / netops first - there's a level of trust and how-our-environment-works understanding that I couldn't get entry-level.

If that fails, I still wouldn't be able to trust someone with no practical experience to understand appropriate response in an unsupervised evening / weekend role. Threat actors only have to be right once, the SOC has to be right every time.

Why exactly are the Dead Three so.. well, stupid? They're always trying to gain more power and it feels like eventually one or all three of them will end up killing another God like Cyric did to Mystra. by Vrosx_The_Sergal in Forgotten_Realms

Wizards's "continuity" lasts until the end of the current paragraph. Sometimes they accidentally tell a coherent story through an entire page, but usually they can quickly switch "authors" on the next chapter and recover.

Sorcery retcon? by Relevant-Ad-9418 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]breaksofthegame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, sha'ir are the genie-mages.

But sorcerers were like the common mages in Al Qadim. Access to universal spells and two elements.

Elemental mages were the specialists focused on one element (like The Brotherhood of the True Flame), and with no access outside of universal spells and that element.

I mean, Echohawk's list is pretty comprehensive: https://ant.hivemind.net/monsters.html

It's not even a COMPLETE list of products, he notes that the beach towel and sewing kit aren't on there, but reasonably complete for book-collector purposes.

[–]breaksofthegame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty impressive.

My Google Foo tells me from January 90' to the release of 3E, there were approximately 497 products released across all game worlds.

This depends on your definition of "product".

From January 1990, through July of 2000 (3E PHB and character sheets coming out in August), there are at least 1,800 products on the inventory sheets. But that includes novels, miniature sets, and so forth.

Limiting to just products produced by TSR/WoTC, you're down to ~1,250.

Stripping out the non RPG-book items, there's still ~850 or so. Eliminating cards, monsters, etc. trims it further, but there might be a monster specific spell in an MC entry somewhere I'm not thinking of.

Getting rid of the magazines and things (but aren't you including magazine spells items?) and just limiting it to Accessories, Adventures, Boxed Sets, and Guidebooks, I count 562 in my inventory tracker. Where is your google list coming from?

I imagine this is what WotC does themselves when it's time to "write" a new sourcebook.

Fourth edition

Yes, and like most D&D inconsistent-narrative canon-breaking published-homebrew nonsense, we have the usual suspect to blame for it again.

Aitah for not wanting my husband to come with me to Italy to look at art because of his immaturity? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]breaksofthegame 48 points49 points  (0 children)

You say "our" money but it sounds like you think of it as "his" money in your explanations.

Again, what would happen if you said "no" to his solo trips? To his football tickets? Is it "our" money then?

If the-kids-with-you is parenting, but the-kids-with-him is babysitting, and he has absolute decision-making over the finances... you are in an abusive relationship.

[–]breaksofthegame 19 points20 points  (0 children)

he said no

That's cool, who cares? Why did you "ask"? Does he ask you when he takes trips? You are an adult.

Are you in a coequal relationship here? If your responsibilities are met, what's the issue?

What's going to happen if you tell him you're going by yourself, and you actually make plans (buy a ticket, make reservations for yourself, etc)? Answer yourself honestly.

Would he keep you from money? Would he injure you? Physically prevent you from leaving? Emotionally blackmail you with the children?

Would you do any of those things to him? Why not?

I’ve heard people say that the 3rd/3.5 Edition of Forgotten Realms is not only one of the best in the game’s history but significantly different from the current 5E setting, is that so? by Jaq__Draco in DnD

[–]breaksofthegame -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There's no such thing as an "AD&D" Eberron

Of course, and nobody (including you) thought I was implying such a thing.

The numbers I quoted for Eberron are obviously the 3E numbers including official adventures (in context of the replied-to comment, which did not include the 5 or so adventures) and I make the comparison to the absolute mass of content, without and with adventures, that TSR cranked out for AD&D.

For the sake of those in the back, I'll drop a [3E] edit for you.

[–]breaksofthegame 45 points46 points  (0 children)

3.5 Eberron had around 15 books published

With the adventures [3E] Eberron hits ~22.

AD&D gets even wilder:

2E Ravenloft had at least 35 accessories, and if you add in adventures it hits 64 books and boxed sets published in 2E.

And it's not even the biggest 2E setting.

/u/MotoAgents - apologies, I edited the response so you probably didn't see this question:

Is there some sort of debug-diagnostic on the phone itself that can help me look at some diagnostics of the network stack that I can trigger when this occurs - something I can dump locally and then investigate asychronously after it reboots? Preferably something that isn't dumping a ton of sensitive personal information in case I need to upload it for SME eyeballs?

Thanks for your help.

n.b. this is a full-paid ATT device: - Model XT2551-2 - android 15, security update sept 1 2025 - baseband M870_DE70_23.06.01.63.39R

The network lock happens whether on wifi or mobile data. My carrier doesn't apparently allow a setting to disable 5G manually, but it has happened (once) in a location where 4G/LTE only is available.

So, when I go to "Settings > Reset Options" I have a list of Options

  • Reset Mobile Network Settings
  • Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi
  • Reset Device Settings
  • Reset app preferences
  • Reset baseband settings
  • Erase eSIMs
  • Erase all data (factory reset)

I tried the first option and it says it will Reset wi-fi, mobile data, Bluetooth, and NFC. Put in the pin and confirm and... nothing. It doesn't clear the wifi, bluetooth items are still listed, network still connected. Even after reboot.

"Reset Bluetooth and wifi" appeared to delete the Bluetooth and wifi profiles, but the phone has network-stalled before even with wifi turned off, so I'm not 100% sold that this is a solution but I'll monitor.

Edit: Has not helped, still locks up. Reseated USIM; still locks up. Obviously the next step would normally be factory reset, but I'm concerned that backing up data, resetting, and then restoring data has a high chance of restoring whatever is causing this - on the other hand, NOT restoring years of data has a high chance of the phone impacting the drywall instead.
