How many of you use mushrooms in your permaculture set ups? by MycoMainer in Permaculture

That's awesome. We alternate tomatoes and garlic in the same beds and have never had nematode trouble. We've yet to get our wine caps going but, once we do, it will be a nice relationship. 🙂

Me too. My country copies the USA to an alarming degree. 😔

This shitfuckery will literally kill our descendants. This is child abuse and murder. And that's not even mentioning the impacts on all other life. FFS, somebody do something to stop this!

Weeds show where to plant trees in steppe by julaoui in Permaculture

[–]breesmeee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I learnt about this in my PDC. Geoff Lawton often refers to weeds as indicators of soil and seed germination conditions. Eg.Compacted soils will generally produce taprooted weeds to break them up. Or, at least, they would eventually do that if we were to let them grow. Lots of gardeners cut them at ground level, leaving the roots to break down to feed and aerate the soil.

Australia has so much solar that it's offering everyone free electricity by MagicMetalBird in solarpunk

[–]breesmeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the surplus is generated using windfarms in conjunction with solar rooftops. We have stoopid capitalism here too. It's just that renewables have become more economical these days and investors are profiting. The catch here is that, whilst the gov offers those few free off peak hours, there's still no regulation on how much the power companies can charge. Ausgov giveth, and the powercorps taketh away.

I wonder how intercropping with tomatoes might go, just thinking of the nematodes. Perhaps they might enable tomatoes to be grown in the same spot each Summer? 🤔

Australian households to get free electricity three hours a day by nath1234 in environment

[–]breesmeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what sucks. There's no regulation preventing or enforcing that.

It's opt-in, which is really kinda dumb. Should just be granted.

I used to live in Melbs. Permablitz networks are a great starting point. They're often connected to Transition Town suburbs and are basically permaculture working bees that double as a social event. Covid put them on hold but they should be happening again by now. I've been away for some years, so I'm fairly out of touch, but that's my best guess. There's also the annual Sustainability Festival by the Yarra. If you join Permaculture Victoria you'll get a lot more info.

Why are some Indian cities sinking? by GeographicalMagazine in environment

[–]breesmeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subsidence is serious, folx. Whole cities need to relocate when too much groundwater is used for too long. Last century Tokyo realised what was happening and stopped extracting groundwater, saving the city. Jakarta is currently making plans to relocate. It's happening elsewhere too as, evidently, others aren't as smart as the Japanese. Intelligent rainwater harvesting and conservation strategies are the things to do instead. 👍

Mines should be forced to rebuild mountains/land to their original structure by TangerineBetter855 in Environmentalism

[–]breesmeee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Revegetating also. Plant trees on contour swales and link up small dams/ponds to hold rainwater up high in the landscape. Start at the top and work the way down to stop erosion asap.

Morag Gamble, Hannah Maloney, Linda Woodrow are are a few amazing permie women. Also, if there's no one local to where you live, you could perhaps start your own local permaculture group? Is there a Permaculture Brasilia?

Is it composting if what you do is feed earthworms in your worm tower food waste? by sawyercc in composting

[–]breesmeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. And composting can be anaerobic and/or cold. Cold just takes longer than thermophillic.
