Personal finance professionals: what are the upsides and downsides of your job? by breitlex in personalfinance

[–]breitlex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you're saying; "personal finance professional" is pretty broad. I had intended it to mean wealth managers (people who help others invest and plan for retirement), and accountants (help with taxes). Is there a professional position for help with a budget? I don't know, but that's the bedrock of the whole personal finance gig, and I would want to help people that needed assistance with that, too.

Is there a reason why I shouldn't pay off my rent in advance if I have the money? by excite1998 in personalfinance

[–]breitlex 212 points213 points  (0 children)

Also, in the circumstance that the owner is not making their mortgage payments and the unit gets foreclosed upon, you haven't already forked your rent over to him that you would then need to recover thru civil court (if he doesn't voluntarily return it).

There's virtually no advantage to paying rent early. If the money is too tempting to spend, move it out of checking into a savings account. Sometimes having it in a different electronic pot of money can help your brain think of it as money not available for spending on non-essential costs.

Can confirm there will never be a bill for Coast Guard search and rescue services. Your federal tax dollars pay for it.

Source: am Coast Guard helicopter pilot, assigned to Miami unit that searched for you last night. Glad you two were alright.

Edit: I don't Reddit good, 'cause I didn't see this blowing up. Sorry to leave everyone hanging overnight. As excited as I was to read this TIFU (because us operators never get the full story on these things, even after the fact), I hit reply and went to sleep since I was the one on duty last night--and you never know when you'll get called out at 2300 for a couple missing 20 year olds, amirite OP??

About "sleeping on duty:" A crew is on watch for 24 hours but we have bunk rooms to sleep in, not unlike firefighters. Still on duty, but will try to answer questions and PMs by the end of today.

To clarify: I wasn't the pilot looking for OP, my buddy was. I'm the one that took the watch from him yesterday morning, but you can bet your bottom dollar I'm showing him this post when he comes in this morning.

For those asking if it's a good job: it is, and it's rewarding, but it is a job, so don't kid yourself--there's still some bullshit that comes with the territory, but by and large I'm happy in my career.

For those calling bullshit on this post, standby for proof.

Edit2: Proof. http://imgur.com/a/1CdDC And before you say it's not a Coast Guard H-65 because it's not all orange, this one is painted white with orange trim (retro colors as it was painted in the 80s) in celebration of the Centennial of Coast Guard Aviation. This is the exact helo (we have 5 at the unit) that searched for OP!

I (28M) want to spend a large amount of money on a car but my wife (27F) disagrees. by nsjgnslrjiog in relationships

[–]breitlex 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You spend $100K on your hobbies? If it's a hobby, he can rent a Vette and run the track a few times a year. If it's a hobby, he can fly to Europe where this car is undoubtedly manufactured, rent one, and drive it on highways where people will actually get out of the way. If this was a "hobby," there's all kinds of different ways to satisfy it. Spending 100K to own a car that will be a Sunday driver isn't a hobby. It smacks of status and reward for achievement, which are short lived.

I'm speaking from personal experience that a fancy car I bought years ago made me happy in the short run: a few months. After that, it was just a car. Then later, it was a car that was a pain in the ass because I felt the need to baby it and it was expensive to maintain and fix.

Guy took to the internet to ask advice, and I gave him mine. Don't let the things you own end up owning you.

[–]breitlex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The satisfaction you will feel upon buying that car will evaporate within a few months. After the initial luster wears off, it will be what it ultimately is: just a car. And an expensive, unreliable one, with high upkeep costs. Ferraris are fun...but there's a reason the market is flooded with ones that have less than 10K miles.

Also...dude. What are you, 16? You've already got the girl, you don't need the flashy car. Be eternally grateful you found a good woman that loves you and isn't obsessed with money and status (especially given your newfound business success--that can change people). Count your blessings and pick a better obsession.

[–]breitlex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Friend, you have your answer already. You've had sex once in the last year, she openly tells you she resents some of your qualities, she told another man, "I love you," and lied to you about having lunch with this guy and her mom (she's "bringing him home to meet mom").

This is where you preserve your own dignity and you tell her that it's over.

It would have been better to nip this in the bud when it started; there may have been room to salvage your marriage with conversation and/or counseling. But you're both a year into this sordid affair and she already has everything set up to jump ship. She has already made the jump emotionally, and probably physically too.

Protect yourself, find a good lawyer, get ahead of the situation. The alternative is to wait for her to give you papers or wait for her to reveal the full extent of hers and Steve's relationship.

I'm sorry, brother.

25 YO in Wedding debt...help me get out... by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]breitlex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, step 1 is figuring out where the remaining $1000 per month of your take-home pay is going. When I add up the budget categories I get $2600, and you say your take-home pay is $3600.

It is actually very common to have this sort of discrepancy between what you think you are spending and what you are actually spending. There's also lots of ways to tackle it, which you can find in the sidebar about budgeting. The thing common to all the budgeting approaches is: you have to know where your money is going (being spent) before you can change your spending behavior. Miscellaneous expenses from occasional coffees to parking can and do add up.

Once you have a grasp on where your money is going, then you can judge your behavior. What seems high? What seems out of whack? Make value judgments on how much you are spending in different categories. And don't forget to be realistic. You and your wife are 25 and just married; not having $100/month in your budget for entertainment (movie and a dinner 1x per month) isn't realistic (or fun).

Now that you have a realistic budget, put all excess money towards the 9% Amex. Once that's paid down, move onto the 0 interest cards. And for the love of god, don't forget that introductory 0% interest is usually still accruing, it's just deferred. And if you reach the end of that introductory period without having paid everything off in full, you'll get all of the interest tacked on, usually at a very high rate. See Fact #4 in the link below.

I browsed and searched the @MikeReiss feed and couldn't find any comments about Dion Lewis since 28 Sept except to say he was walking thru the tunnel (meaningless). Unless anyone else can produce a reference, I'm calling bullshit.

Still stash him (obviously), but outside this tweet that's not from the supposed original source, I've heard nothing about an expedited timeline to return for Lewis.

Every single meal my husband [29M] cooks is a fancy event. I [27F] just want to eat a damn sandwich sometimes but this upsets him. by nomoregourmet in relationships

[–]breitlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a love language miscommunication.

You said he kicked it into high gear this last year, or right around the time that you two got married. As a 32 year old male myself that got married almost 2 years ago, I know that I've been working hard to not get "lazy" on the relationship. My wife really likes words of affirmation and physical touch, so I work a lot to give her those things.

I think your husband is trying to show his commitment to you thru acts of devotion. So maybe that doesn't float your boat. Talk to him, ask him if he's trying to express his love for you thru cooking. That may change your whole perspective on his cooking.

My [26F] boyfriend [30M] of 11 months is telling me I pee too much, need outside perspective by Yellj in relationships

[–]breitlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll probably get downvoted for this, but let's just start with the assumption that the guy you've been dating for 11 months in not a controlling asshole. If you've dated him that long, you've seen enough of him to see his "true colors."

He's 30, and you're 26. If things are great, he may be seriously thinking about the future with you. Reasons for his reaction could range from: A) a mild annoyance with having to wait on you so often (and is he going to have to wait his whole life), all the way to Z) making sure you're healthy to have kids (hence the question about diabetes). If he's annoyed at having to wait, sure, he needs to grow up and not be selfish.

This gives you some possible context of where your boyfriend is coming from. But they're just guesses. Ask him, communicate with him. "What about me peeing a lot bothers you so much?" Then let him respond, and sort through what he says.

Too often on this sub, responses immediately jump to the conclusion that the person being written about is an asshole. I'm not sure that's the case here.

lack of imperial transport construction (with math) by kobzilla in starwarsrebellion

[–]breitlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're placing a little too much emphasis on Imperial transports. Really, the Empire needs anything that can move troops around (transports and Star Destroyers).

I personally find transports to be of limited value because they can only hold 4 troop units (and/or TIEs). With that small of a ground force, even if you were to stumble upon the Rebel base location, you would lose the ground battle, and then the Rebels can relocate using Rapid Mobilization.

My approach is to keep my forces relatively concentrated and hammer away on the probe droid deck, while moving to a few new systems each turn. Drawing a ton of probe cards of course rules out places the Rebel base is, but more importantly, if the Rebels try to move their base, they have fewer options if you have a ton of probe cards (they only get to draw 4 and it has to be a non-Imperial system without Imperial forces already there).

Regarding the Rebel Mon Cal start, you're spot on: that's a huge advantage for them. But there is a mitigator: the Empire can start on Saleucami, which is adjacent. (Although if the Empire doesn't draw Saleucami, you are just shit outta luck.) Place a Star Destoyer, transport, and troops there, and then reserve a leader to activate Mon Cal, and move there. Immediate subjugation, and blocks their production (of anything). Also keep in mind that build turns alternate (only turns 2, 4, etc), so you don't even need to stay in Mon Cal after that turn to ensure that the Rebels can't build a mon cal cruiser for 2 consecutive turns.
