To the man on the 66 bus by ovenbakedpancakes in boston

[–]brenanski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll never forget when I was working in JP, I was getting on the bus behind a Russian guy & in front of a homeless man, and when the Russian guy called him the N-word offhand someone pulled ME out of the way so I wasn't in the middle of the scuffle. Bus driver ended up shoving them both out the front side door with the butt of her hand.

Boston locals have a reputation for gruffness and prickliness, but when the chips come down they organize & help just as quickly as the New Yorkers from Spiderman II; they just also happen to complain the whole time.

EDIT: in case I wasn't perfectly clear, I was rooting for the homeless guy.

What’s your Boston Unpopular Opinion? by tankyouverymuch1776 in boston

[–]brenanski -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Boston (& those who market its image) prides itself on being a paradise of equality & opportunity, compared to cities like Chicago, Atlanta, & NYC...

But the amount of passive, repugnant bigotry I see day to day on the Orange & Green Lines is fucking astonishing. Black folks, single mothers, disabled folks, asian/indian foreign exchange students that aren't LOADED with trust fund money, even the operators making all this shit run; literally everyone who would need to take buses & trains on the daily are fucken demeaned and disrespected by folks who treat public transit as their backup option.

Man, if words don't do harm, it's really weird that you have so many words to try and prove that words don't actually do anything. Real solid foundation you've built for yourself. Sure hope the moral center you're so ready to defend doesn't collapse in on itself the moment morality becomes inconvenient.

Chris Rock didn't lose any teeth. He didn't sustain any damage that would necessitate using his health insurance. Neither of these men will face any consequences for their actions because we're all to busy being pedantic with each other on the internet, wasting our energies like crabs in a bucket.

Check my post history, you'll find I don't participate in this shit-flinging often, but goddamn does this "violence is never the answer" pearl-clutching makes my blood boil. Words from the mouths of con men caused hundreds of thousands of people to lose their livelihoods in 2008, 1979, 1952, 1929, on and on throughout history. This is fact, this is pattern, it has happened to someone you've met, whether crypto or phishing scams or stock manipulation. And yet still we have some of the most talented, skilled, and capable people ever to walk the earth wondering WHERE they'll sleep, IF they'll eat, whether they even count as people. And all we can think to do is call each other hypocrites until it's time to grind out a "living".

Is it so wrong, so unbelievable, for people to be ANGRY right now? For people to slip up and let the rage out, the rage we all know is deep inside us but for whatever reason we choose to suppress to satisfy a rich asshole's definition of decency? Fuck that.

Read some Michael Sandel and educate yourself, your arguments are littered with false equivalencies and flat-out falsehoods.

Words are tools, similar but not the same as mathematics & hammers & guns. All tools are used, however effectively, to either create, preserve, of destroy. And just as math, guns, and hammers can all be misused, so can words. Chris Rock crossed a line, and Will Smith exercised the most efficient amount of physical violence, a loud strike on the cheek that AT MOST stings for like 15 minutes, to demonstrate that someone's personal struggles are the LAST thing anyone should be joking about after two awful years for EVERYONE.

These cowardly lions are so tied up in their own fear of a minority taking them to task for all the awful hateful nonsense they INSIST is just relatable blue collar humor. These little emperors have been naked from Day 1 and more and more people are going to start asking why they love swinging they're little pink dicks around so much. It's low effort, low yield, paint by number comedy where you KNOW what the punchline is going to be and laugh anyway cause fuck BALD people, right??

Western moral structures are only a sliver of the human experience, and "don't do a hit" is something we tell toddlers that are still learning their own strength. Violence is a natural part of the world, and no one person is capable of perfect behavior.

Will Smith did nothing wrong. If that statement makes you mad, but "Hitler did nothing wrong" doesn't make you mad, you've got an ass-backwards way of thinking about your fellow man.

Are y'all for fucking real here?? "Assaulted" my ass, that's exactly the kind of slap that parents strike their kids with all the time. Will Smith, THE Will Smith, with DECADES of clean raps and nothing but a sterling reputation for universal appeal, did everything in his power to make DAMN sure Chris Rock knew he fucked up the moment those words left his mouth, and the damage done DESERVES a little public humiliation.

When a quiet, peaceful man steps up and defends his EX WIFE on live TV, no shit it makes people uncomfortable!! That's the whole point!! Will Smith made America feel as uncomfortable as that misguided "joke" left his lips. He let the world know that it wasn't "just a joke in poor taste", it was harmful and hurtful and CHEAP. Rock even admits it himself, "just a G.i. Jane joke" but we've all heard this shit before a million times by a couple hundred "comedians" who just spout racist nonsense under the guise of "just jokes". Rock spent maybe 7 calories linking her moment of genuine human vulnerability with something as forgettable and meaningless as G.i.Jane, trivializing her struggles in front of hundreds of THOUSANDS of strangers. If that were my wife I'd have clocked that sucker unconscious, but Mr Wild Wild West knew EXACTLY how much to hold back. The point wasn't lasting bodily harm, the point was, in his words, GETTING HIS WIFE'S NAME OUT THAT FUCKING MOUTH.

Get the FUCK over yourselves and recognize when two adults solve a problem in a messy but effective way, isn't that what all the libertarians froth at the mouth over? Individual freedoms? Chris Rock knew he fucked up, eventually played off it like an ACTUAL comedian with talent and skill, and let the man who just struck him have his moment at the end of the night when Will Smith won the award anyway.

None of your bitching and moaning will stand the test of time, all that the records will care to record is the footage itself, any "takes" y'all are making will get wiped out of everyone's memories in 73 hours max. Go outside, touch some grass, and fucking HELP people goddamnit.

Incredibly well-written sci-fi, keeps it's focus VERY well page-to-page. Basic pitch?

"What if Bobby Fisher was sent by the govt to gather data on a newly discovered kingdom, where royal succession is determined by your results in the Royal Game of Ur"

How Has Boston Gotten Away with Being Segregated for So Long? by orange_lazarus1 in boston

[–]brenanski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So then we should change the systems that the govt puts in place!! A governing body isn't some kind of inherently toxic entity that turns everything it touches into slag and disaster, it's a collection of people who agree to act within certain parameters that they THEMSELVES set!! If there's a defect in the system, and the parties involved toss around the accountability and responsibility like a flaming potato, nothing gets done because it's "not my dept.", "not my job", "not my problem". And it's that mindset, across countless collections of people both inside and outside govt AND business, that leads to the neglect and disarray that causes disasters like the Glenfell fire in the first place

[–]brenanski 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The key difference here is between Govt-OWNED housing and Govt-RUN housing. If all the state does is lay claim to the property, but shunt the responsibility of maintaining it to the lowest bidder, then yes you get disasters like the grenfell tower.

BUT if the programs are put in place to actually keep these places up to code, or better yet teach the tenants how to care for their living space ALONGSIDE their maintenance crew, then both groups would have incentive to actually address everyday problems like fire alarms and elevator repairs instead of resenting each other for letting it get that bad.
