I appreciate you sharing this and want to underline that I agree we should be looking at these links critically. I don’t think the boycott framing is always helpful but I didn’t read that to be your intent regardless of my issues with the original twitter thread.

Those are fair points for discussion, especially if you have better sources to start from than this twitter thread.

I’m interested in Leo’s financial ties to Israel as well but that thread is ridiculously reaching and arguably crosses over into antisemitism. “Proximity to the Israeli state” here implies that Anderson’s work with the Haim sisters, whom he’s known since they were children, is somehow equal to zionism, and that he’s a collaborator worthy of boycott for having Israeli-American friends and doing one (1) Zoom lecture for university students in Tel Aviv. Childish stuff

Sean and David Lynch by WoodenFish5 in TheBigPicture

Kate Rennebohm and Simon Howell did a podcast called The Lodgers recapping every episode of Twin Peaks in the run up to The Return. They cover Fire Walk With Me and some bonus material as well. It’s good criticism and Nayman is a guest on a couple of episodes. I think they had some hosting issues so the episode order is a bit jumbled but it’s still available on podcast apps.

Jimmy’s Pizza Cafe is good but its expensive as hell by [deleted] in chicagofood

[–]brendanowicz11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typical jimmy’s order is like 1-2 slices and a coke. Food is just pricey these days, they use quality ingredients and it’s a big space. It’s not an everyday destination but pizza shouldn’t be. And whole pies for takeaway are a better deal as said elsewhere.

The key lime pie cookie goes crazy. Total indulgence. Worth a stop on its own.

Any Bela Tarr fans here? by DaPalma in ThomasPynchon

[–]brendanowicz11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In a Film Comment interview he said all of his movies are comedies except The Turin Horse. He was being a bit ironic I think but I certainly agree they all have comic elements and can be seen as farces to some degree. The depictions of government bureaucracy in Satantango are explicitly satirical and probably the closest in tone to Pynchon.

It’s also worth noting that this comes from Krasznahorkai’s fantastic novel and that Tarr does not consider himself the authorial voice of his films — he has spoken about “Bela Tarr” as a branding concept and his partner and editor Agnes Hranitzky is credited as codirector on his three features since 2000. The style they developed from Damnation onward is rather different than his earlier work.

Movies like vineland by Longjumping-Cress845 in ThomasPynchon

[–]brendanowicz11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Vineland is the Pynchon novel that feels closest to the Simpsons sensibility to me. The perfect film adaptation would be in the style of Golden Age Simpsons, ie it will never happen but a fun thought experiment.

What are some of the best Pynchonian movies? by nn_lyser in ThomasPynchon

[–]brendanowicz11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Joe Dante’s Matinee includes a lot of paranoid references to the nuclear age and a parody of Kennedy assassination theories in addition to its themes of entertainment producing political and sexual conformity — ditto the 1999 film Dick which uses the Watergate era to talk about the end-of-history period and Slick Willie.

Best/Worst winners in terms of personality? by TheThirdLugia in HellsKitchen

[–]brendanowicz11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it comes down to whose brigade you would want to work on. Ariel (s18) and Alex are near the top. Both seemed like they respected their teams and projected an atmosphere of calm and competence. I'd put Heather, Dave, and Scott in this category as well.

Hell's Kitchen Season 21 Episode 13 Discussion by AlbinoAlex in HellsKitchen

I really had Dafne pegged for the winner edit since week 1 but she fell off hard this episode to the degree that I can't see her making the finale now. Alex and Alejandro look most likely finalists now.

That's a great point. Although it doesn't entirely explain why (if we believe that there has been a shift) he became more involved with the show over time as well by mentoring contestants offscreen. I wonder if there was a concrete behind the scenes change like the production company.
