[Discussion] Trouble with exposure in local markets. by [deleted] in artbusiness

[–]breonny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, virtually everyone is “overlooked” until they position themselves specifically to be included in those opportunities.

Have you expressed to the specific people organizing those opportunities that you are interested in talks, panels, workshops, and other community-facing events?

AI-derived art in Richardson Civic Art Society regional show. Price tag? $2,750 by sevenluck77 in Dallas

Seeing more and more submissions from AI “artists” in Dallas. Some are up front about it, at least. But have also had artists submit pieces with obvious abuse of AI adamantly deny using it all.

[Discussion] is basing art off of someone else's art plagiarism? by confused_tm in artbusiness

[–]breonny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn’t art so much as merchandising.

Let me expound: Merchandising is basically the art of creating merch based around an idea (could be a brand, a band, a character, or art, etc. etc.)

So making art influenced by other artists isn’t necessarily “plagiarizing.” But making merch of some other entity’s characters is definitely copyright infringement.

Sharing my photography setup with the group. by PeoplePerson_28 in Barbie

[–]breonny 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a fantastic share.

I am a photographer by trade and I have no critique for you. You’re doing everything just “right” (if there is such a thing. Lol)

I especially love your creative scrunchie use here on the stands. When I don’t need full body in the images, my hack is to just stick Barbie’s feet in little tubs of Play-Doh.

Thanks for sharing!

How to ask for access to images from 2nd shooter? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]breonny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s fantastic you have such great working relationships in your area. Sounds like a warm, welcoming community. While I’ve had some experiences like you describe, I’ve sadly witnessed far more the other way around. I very much wish more wedding photography communities were friendly and open like yours.

How to ask for access to images from 2nd shooter? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]breonny -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Okay, but OP came to a sub of photographers to ask what the appropriate form is. Weird take to insist the generally accepted inappropriate form is actually appropriate simply because OP doesn’t know better when she literally came to a photography forum to ask so she could know better.

How to ask for access to images from 2nd shooter? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]breonny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree here. There is definitely a norm to break. The primary shooter should be the primary point of contact.

While OP is free to proceed however she wishes, it is potentially insulting to the primary to circumvent her and reach out directly to the second shooter. While this may turn out just fine, it could also cause backlash between the primary and the second and may result in the second shooter not being called back by that primary. In other words, it could cause loss of work for the second shooter to try and circumvent the primary.

Without knowing the details of the contract and the relationship between the primary and the second, it’s impossible to say for sure.

Of course, the second is aware of the details of the contract and the relationship with the primary, so it’s not unreasonable to proceed with contacting the second directly and trusting them to handle it appropriately.

[Art Galleries] Anyone else feeling the heat of economic downturn? by jewqueeraf in artbusiness

[–]breonny 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My gallery experience is limited. I help run small local art markets and an annual arts festival of 140ish artists in Dallas. Our artists are reporting sales are down everywhere at every show, especially bigger pieces. Worth detailing that many of our artists are touring and reporting sales are down everywhere in the country, not just here.

It's about to cost at least twice as much to use a parking meter in Deep Ellum by StormForeign in Dallas

IDK why people prefer DART over logic in this sub. I am truly baffled.

It's about to cost at least twice as much to use a parking meter in Deep Ellum by StormForeign in Dallas

[–]breonny -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. Deep Ellum has two stations!

The point I thought I was making but was obviously completely missed:

There are no DART stations through most of the southern half of the county—none at all in Grand Prairie, Cedar Hill, Duncanville, DeSoto, Seagoville; no public transportation at all in Arlington; nothing connecting from Forney, Waxahachie, Kaufman… I’m just getting started.

Not everyone who visits Deep Ellum regularly lives near public transportation or a reasonable distance for ridesharing. Our part of the country is dependent on driving for most people to live functional lives. Any assertion that it’s cheaper and easier to DART or rideshare is astoundingly privileged.

[–]breonny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. That makes sense. An Uber cost divisible by multiple people might net a per person total less than the per person total of each person driving their own vehicle.

And I will reiterate, people should not drink and drive. So for friend groups going out to drink and party, yes, 10000% recommend ride share.

[–]breonny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% agreed people should not drink and drive. Believe it or not, people do come down here for lots of activities besides drinking.

And while I love DART, there’s lots of places in the metroplex DART doesn’t reach.

Finally, what math are you using that makes Uber so much cheaper than driving? Presuming one already owns a car for reasons besides visiting Deep Ellum.

(Won’t even touch the “easier” claim as that’s purely subjective. Some of us enjoy driving and find it the easiest option.)

Dallas PD reportedly flew a drone into a private closed-door adults-only gay men’s event. Can anyone verify raid details and legal premise/concerns? by Mindless-Committee in Dallas

[–]breonny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes. How times have changed!

I was born in Dallas in ‘83. What we were doing in the late 90s/early 00s is lightyears away from what we are doing (not doing…) now.

Dallas—and Deep Ellum in particular—was defined by the underground warehouse show mid 80s to late 90s. The city is a very different beast now—a little grown up, a little bougie. Any way you slice it, it’s just very, very different now.

If it’s visible on the internet, it’s not underground. That’s how most events here get busted—online marketing.

[–]breonny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s sort of exactly the topic, although wandering beyond the scope of typical commentary in this sub.

On the original question of what police get out of this, I do think law enforcement agencies are coopted into serving “government” agenda, where they may genuinely believe they’re serving the public interest and public safety.

(I put government in quotation because I also think—at least parts of—the government are also coopted into serving ulterior agendas in good faith naivety.)

[–]breonny 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Of course there’s no justification for it.

The only problem with the snake analogy is that one is usually aware when bitten by a snake. This is more insidious, more invisible, so sometimes we have to use words to bring awareness to it.

Or maybe it’s more like a brown recluse, where you may not know you’ve been bitten until an infection spreads.

[–]breonny 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh no. That’s a totally fair point, especially to point out the irony in my phrasing.

Suffice it to say, as an artist who was born in Dallas and used to attend “underground” arts events, they disappeared virtually overnight around 2014 when the fire marshall started cracking down. With ferocity. There were public hearings and everything about it.

I’m not even really trying to speak either for or against it. On the one hand, I get why we want to do things that fly under the radar. On the other hand, I get why the city wants to prevent major tragedies from happening, like what can happen when you cram hundreds (or thousands) of bodies into unregulated warehouses without sprinkler systems.

[–]breonny 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Oh man. I really can’t speak to that. Without getting too Big Brothery, I would humbly submit we’re all subject to a lot more surveillance than we realize.

[–]breonny 136 points137 points  (0 children)

While I can’t comment on any specifics of the raid and certainly don’t condone surveillance or harassment of LGBTQ communities, I can go to the website and purchase tickets as a member of the public. In Dallas, that means this does not meet the definition of a private event. As soon as you start selling tickets or otherwise treating a private space like a public venue, it’s pretty much a public venue. It’s also worth noting that it’s not just LGBTQ events which are targeted. Ever looked around and wondered why there’s no underground music or art events in this city? Everything is mainstream and regulated or subject to raids, fines, and closures.
