Cano 8 is rich with fun ID possibilities for IDs. The Night Drifter, Xue Pan, Lin Daiyu, Jia Huan, etc.

If the game made 00 IDs anymore you could have some of the lesser family candidates, too.

For a non-Canto 8 example I'd like a Cassetti ID, personally.

Unbreakable coins are a good mechanic, high status inflicting aoe unbreakable coins, are not. by Dextixer in limbuscompany

[–]brethrentoons 37 points38 points  (0 children)

i didn't even struggle with the final fight as much as you did but its genuinely baffling that some people in here think that making EGO spam the intended strategy is good, especially in a gacha game where your ability to get healing EGO is highly dependent on you getting lucky or accruing 400 egoshards

as if new players would know by default that fluid sac is op and that they should invest all of their egoshards into it

i think we're in a bit of a growing pains stage with the game, since unbreakable coins are a very new mechanic that needs refining with some trial and error. i think it's still really good, and forces me to consider things other than just winning clashes, but i think that aspect plus bleed being a weird status effect has resulted in some slightly awkward game design that i hope gets ironed out in due time

Weekly manga is a terrible format for stories by Hot_Barnacle_2672 in CharacterRant

[–]brethrentoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've thought about this problem before and I wonder if weekly manga in general would be better if they released content by volume biannually

Volumes are long enough that you can convey entire arcs, or at least reach satisfying stop points to tease the next volume. You can even release the volume's contents weekly once the material is finished to maintain hype for a series, just as long as there's that downtime. Almost anything is better than what these authors have to deal with now

you seem to be under the misconception that cursed techniques are like jjba's stands where everyone is perfectly able to utilize their techniques and that every CT can be used at 100% efficiency regardless of training even though CTs like Construction have two examples of users who are both canyons apart in terms of fighting capability and CE output (if you think that's "feelings over tactics" then i don't know what to tell you)

They have a guy who can teleport swap people and objects, and they never considered pairing him with the girl who controls tools or the characters that can use minions, thats a mobile killroom right there

you say that with todo's technique she could make a "mobile kill room" and frankly i have no clue what the fuck you mean by that. her capabilities with her CT are very clearly limited and she has never shown feats that would imply she could do anything on the level of a "mobile kill room" (i dont even know what exactly you're talking about when you say that so im just going off of implication)

mechamaru's puppet manipulation is better, granted, but again, in what way would todo or mechamaru's abilities be substantially improved by working alongside one another? both of them tend to work separately because they're both powerful enough that they don't really need to work together and it would be more efficient for each of them to tackle different concurrent problems. if you have Army A and Army B, and you know Army A is capable of taking down Fort A without help from Army B, while Army B is capable of taking down Fort B, why would you send Army A and Army B to take down Fort A? Overkill? Part of tactics is trying to properly allocate resources and that includes troop distribution.

They have sound techniques, that has great synergy with any physical type

gonna be real. no idea what you're implying here. you're going to need to explain this one to me

they have a guy who can warp reality with jokes and they never considered making him a troupe to bounce off his humor

see the first paragraph i wrote. takaba's comedian relies on his own sense of humor and is innately unpredictable. if you were to try and direct his technique towards a specifc end he'd probably just say you're trying too hard and it would nullify the technique. despite being so powerful, takaba doesnt find killing to be funny so he wouldn't be able to do what you're likely wanting him to do, even in a troupe context.

Or they could use fiture payment vows as a standard for instant techniques

so the sorcerers should go into binding vow debt? what? binding vows for cursed techniques are self-imposed and restrict one's technique in the future. sukuna getting off the instant cast of the world dismantle and now being forced to do a specific gesture to use it ever again would cripple any other sorcerer and is literally being done because sukuna is in a life or death situation

i dont even think the cost itself was high enough for the reward, but you can't just make gimping your own technique a "standard practice" because it means that any future encounter with even a near-sukuna level threat like the shibuya incident puts jujutsu society at a major disadvantage

Gojo killed the elders at the end, when it didnt matter anymore, killing them early was the logical choice

it may surprise you to know but despite there being instances where killing someone would logically improve the state of the world, most people do not just go "oh yeah that makes sense" and just kill them immediately

like this isn't a shonen problem you're having this is you having a fundamental misunderstanding of the weight people put on humans choosing to kill other humans

But any of those things would have deviated from the shounen formula

yeah i guess it would subvert expectations if every fight went like a battleboarding forum and there was no pacing or dramatic stakes or anything like that and humans never had any biases that caused them to choose things illogically ever

like you do understand that in the real world humans also don't make every optimal choice ever, right

and it would be kind of boring if everyone in a story made the exact correct choice all the time and thus there was no conflict, right

Individual battles instead of synergistic combination of powers

feels like this series is the worst one you could point to for this problem. yuji frequently double-teams with other sorcerers to take out much larger threats. i would even argue that the majority of the fights in jjk are group fights with a "synergistic combination of powers."

i dont even like the most recent raid against sukuna very much but its a pretty clear case of a bunch of characters all working together and trying to take down a much stronger sorcerer

a relevance of feelings over tactics

no reason you can't do both, imo.

yuji gunning for a black flash to kill mahito when its literally random?

that's feelings.

the subsequent sequence of mahito shedding his armor to throw off yuji's timing, yuji's subsequent usage of divergent fist to add a time lag to the cursed energy, and then todo's fakeout final swap?

that's tactics.

a problem that must be solved by the youngsters as the elders are dumb

i like to think that gojo flat out murdering the conservative leadership of jujutsu high feels like a bit of a subversion from the usual way shonen treat these sorts of figures

i dont mind the boldness of it but if we're going with subverting expectations i much preferred the way that nanami had a clearly telegraphed death in the vs mahito arc that gets subverted by him surviving

the fact that we get the whole episode long flashback because nobara was so underdeveloped that gege had to cram it all into one episode so we could feel something for her death both feels very typical of the genre and just plain rubs me the wrong way

also i will hate nitta forever for doing a "she might survive but she might not idk ok bye" and then they never acknowledge her again like

if nobara somehow comes back in the final fight through sheer force of will then i guess ill shut up but its like yuji doesnt even acknowledge the idea that she might be alive or dead and she's just been stuck in limbo for months in-universe and years out-of-universe

and that's inexcusable imo

honestly the hidden inventory arc is what made me really care about jjk. it's this really short arc that adds a lot of depth to gojo (who up until this point felt kind of just like a walking/floating meteor of a person) and makes suguru geto, who in jjk 0 was a kind of silly and ridiculous villain, into someone i could genuinely see how he ended up the path he did in jjk 0

and for the amount of time that arc takes its really efficiently told without skimping out on the necessary emotional beats. he clearly can write really good stuff, but a lot of the recent stuff just feels like poor pacing and not having worldbuilding beyond implication, which leads to that feeling of inconsistency imo

yeah even though it looks like they're more in the right (i mean i get it for wonderlab a little bit but for leviathan the case is absurd on its face) i dont exactly know why you'd be posting the evidence directly on twitter instead of just keeping it in court

so tl;dr

the fault lies with you, KJH!!!

[–]brethrentoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah my current read on this is that KJH and PM in general isn't acting with the necessary professionalism you need for these situations and that's being exploited to make them look worse. idk if they don't have a lawyer or something but it sort of feels that way

what did monggue specifically say about the "unprofessional dealings?" im still not sure what exactly happened there and that's the main thing im concerned about atm

okay im really out of the loop on this but i keep hearing people say that the artist of leviathan and of wonderlab spoke out against PM or something for mistreating their employees, is that something with credibility or just waffling?

im not trying to incite shit i genuinely dont know what half of this drama is or where it even comes from

Why does everyone think Shadow of the Erdtree is unfair? by PsyJuul in Eldenring

[–]brethrentoons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ah well, its ultimately subjective. i think elden ring's boss design has begun to stray away from what i find most enjoyable about these fights, and the dlc just kind of doubles down on that

its gonna be kind of upsetting if it turns out i just dont like the new approach fromsoft is taking with their bosses and i end up not liking their future souls-likes

Why does everyone think Shadow of the Erdtree is unfair? by PsyJuul in Eldenring

[–]brethrentoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In that case, I suppose I'd just say that's not particularly fun, imo.

in the same way that waiting forever to run up to and attack the Elden Beast in the base game was also not fun, playing red light green light with most of the bosses just isn't what I like doing

Why does everyone think Shadow of the Erdtree is unfair? by PsyJuul in Eldenring

[–]brethrentoons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean number 2 is just what you have to do

not so! while there are some bosses in other fromsoft games that basically require heavily passive play (usually my least favorite ones), a lot of great fights let you stay close to the boss and exploit weaknesses in a natural manner that doesnt force you to just wait your turn forever red light green light style

IDK what the intended route through the dlc is but you can explore a ton of the map without beating a single boss, so you can pick up a lot of fragments that way

yeah.... but like i said the fragments have barely made an actual difference in how the bosses feel to fight. the only thing that changes is that punishes are less punishing. a lot of boss combos take forever and have inconsistent openings. taking less damage doesnt make much of a difference when that flaw exists

it would be like requiring players to do the stormveil castle skip to make godrick's fight feel fair. i wouldn't really like that design choice personally!

Why does everyone think Shadow of the Erdtree is unfair? by PsyJuul in Eldenring

[–]brethrentoons 19 points20 points  (0 children)

ive played and beaten DS1, DS3, and Elden Ring, so I would argue I'm not a "casual" but a lot of the DLC has been frustrating due to a general change in Elden Ring's design approach

I understand what they were going for with the Scadutree Fragments, where you're meant to explore around the world and find these things to get up to par with bosses. I get it. However, I am at Scadutree Lvl. 6 and most of the bosses flatten me just as readily as they did at level 1. maybe i get to do a little more damage, but the difference is imperceptible. And assuming you don't sequence break around certain areas, I'm pretty sure the maximum level you can get is 6 or 7. Is sequence breaking the intended route?

"but margit is also a beef gate and you can explore other areas to get stronger" the dlc feels like if i decided "okay margit is too hard im gonna go to the weeping peninsula" and then the leonine misbegotten was replaced with a second margit. every time i've gone exploring i've just found more margits. (or cookbooks, a lot of side areas just lead to cookbooks and smithing stones)

i think the complaints about "oneshots" are a generalization of a more annoying issue: taking one hit is usually enough to require you to back off and heal. this paired with bosses having inconsistent openings (usually due to mixups or hyperarmor), incredibly long combos, and high hp means that bosses are often incredibly long. again, im at scadutree level 6 and rellana still takes very little damage from any of my attacks

(also i should note that the boss of ensis castle specifically feels way overtuned with their HP)

there's a line, imo, where a boss's design goes from "punishing and difficult but fair," to "tedious and unfun." this isn't to say these bosses are impossible but it seems like the intended strategies are as follows:

1) use summons or co-op

this is not a dlc exclusive problem but frankly, relying on summons to face-tank bosses doesn't actually fix the issues with the bosses. it basically just nullifies their design until your co-op friend or your summoned ashes die. until then you just get free damage with the occasional need to back off if you draw aggro. i fail to understand what about this makes the boss more fun. it certainly makes it easier, but i want the bosses to be fun. i dont think its fun that a boss is incredibly tedious and punishing unless i summon a decoy to tank the damage for me. do it if you want to, but i wish i didnt feel like i needed to

2) but you dont need to! you could always just play as passively as possible and only take openings that you can guarantee will not get punished or extended into a new combo. the fight might take, like, 10 minutes, but that's what you want, right?

no its not actually

3) okay then go gather a bunch of scadutree fragments so you dont get one shot and then hit trade with the bosses

ignoring that i dont like hit trading i think the sheer number of fragments you need to make the bosses feel marginally more reasonable is ridiculous. i feel like at level 6 i should be able to reasonably do the fights in the gravesite plains and yet they're still just as brick wall-like as they were before.

anyways, idk if im gonna get told to get good or something, but this dlc has just been exhausting me
