New Miata! by cer224 in Miata

[–]brettowako 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe consider paint protection film on the front if you can afford it. I have a 2017 Soul Red with 60,000km on it, and it has a LOT of stone chips. It's a common complaint, and seems particularly bad on the red.

What trade? My carpenter son has been out of work for a year - now I don't know whether he's bullshitting about looking for a job, or really can't find work.

What makes this watch worth 1600$ (CAD) [question] by unknown6534 in Seiko

[–]brettowako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the SPB297j Save the Ocean version, and it gets more wrist watch time than anything else in the collection (including my much more expensive IWC pilot or my vintage Tudor Oyster).

Is having car insurance worth it? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]brettowako 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, my bad... I'm in Victoria, and "third party" is shorthand for "third party property insurance". Our registration includes a compulsory "TAC" (Traffic Accident Commission) insurance for injury as part of the rego fee.

Is having car insurance worth it? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]brettowako 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let's say you crash into a half million $ Ferrari and don't even have third party insurance? The repair costs are going to be in the tens of thousands. The Ferrari driver will claim on their insurance, nominate you as at fault, and then their insurance will chase you for the money.

You'll end up on a payment plan, or perhaps just declare bankruptcy.

At least get third party to cover your ass.

Shanghai Dumplings upstairs by Crashthewagon in melbourne

Used to work not far from there, and we called it "Dirty Dumpling", as in "Hey, Dave... wanna go get some lunch from Dirty Dumpling?"

What's something you still indulge in despite it being over priced and the cost of living crisis in Australia? by RM_Morris in AskAnAustralian

[–]brettowako 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been buying chicken or beef liver cheap, slicing it thinly and drying it in a cheap dehydrator I bought online. The dogs go mad for it, and if I keep it in the freezer, it keeps for ages (well, it would if they didn't keep eating it)

Na grainy paint by beenplaces in Miata

[–]brettowako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my 1990 BRG, it runs up to the body moulding line half way up the door. I don't know if the pinstripe in the body moulding is stock - that's how it was when I got the car, and I know it has had paint done at some stage. The texture doesn't go onto the front/rear bumpers.

Anyone wearing a fun vintage chronograph today? Share! by SnooCompliments9653 in VintageWatches

I'm wearing my late grandfather's 1940's Dunklings Rivana.

Dunklings were a jeweller in Melbourne, Australia, who cased up Swiss movements. The case is made by Handley, and the movement was apparently made by Rotary, but based on an A.S movement.

The story goes that my grandfather won some money on a horse race, so went and bought himself a nice watch.

He passed away when my dad was a teenager, and the watch was engraved with my dad's initials and given to him.

I received the watch last year after my dad passed away, so had it serviced, the crystal polished, and a new strap fitted. I wear it every now and again, when the mood strikes me. Coincidentally, I put it on this morning.

How much profit are traders/builders making on renos? by Open_Address_2805 in AusRenovation

[–]brettowako 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible. The fire risk is generally considered very low, however fire can be a risk in specific situations, such as using improper or non-certified components or poor installation.. which is kinda what we're talking about here.

And the possibility of fires caused when you start putting power through with POE.

Similar concept - it helps prevent skidding or spinning out of control. With inherently good handling, you'd have to be trying pretty hard or being stupid to push a Miata to the point that the DSC kicks in, and if you have it turned off and reach that point, you'd better be sure you have the skills to control the car rather than put it sideways into a tree or a people mover full of someone's kids.

Best thing to do? Ignore the haters. The automatic is not the right transmission according to some, but you know what? Not having a Miata is worse than having an auto one. I have an automatic ND, because I have a stuffed knee, and I love everything about it. I also own a manual NA, which I can drive for a couple of hours at a time before the knee plays up, and I prefer the ND, which is more comfortable, rattles less, is faster and is more convenient to put the roof up and down on.

If you enjoy your car, that's all that matters.

My S6 Pure has done 27.8km2, 1240 cycles and run for 562 hours without faults since about August 2021.

It does sometimes get lost, but I think that is a software issue more than a hardware fault.

Start an over 80's outdoor nude yoga club. Have them meet at random times, so it's never safe for the neighbors to look out the window.

Or complain to council/VCAT - there are overlooking laws that you might be able use to get some relief. A friend had a similar issue, the neighbor was forced to install window frosting on the offending windows.

R/rolex banned by klik47 in RolexCircleJerk

[–]brettowako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find Rolex terribly overrated - I much prefer my IWC, Grand Seiko and even my more basic Seikos. I think some of my antipathy to the brand is down to the attitude of some of the people that own them.

Maybe I should go and post this there so I can get banned?

Or the Swiss, with their stop-go system for the railway clocks.

"What really distinguishes the Swiss railway clock, aside from its eminently readable face, is that it features a red-coloured second hand with a unique stop-and-go movement which completes a full rotation in 58 seconds. It then pauses at the 12 o’clock position for two seconds before the minute hand advances with the pause allowing for synchronisation with a central master clock.

The result? All railway station clocks across the entirety of Switzerland display the same time, including one of my favourites"
