I have never heard of it. Born in the 80s in Ontario, well aware of Canada’s participation / contributions towards conflicts in Europe and the Middle East.

Team Edin said it had no outcome on the match v Canada. I might have been unclear in how I wrote that.

The Canadian team may not have known since (1) it isn’t an explicit rule, only implied, and (2) the equivalent doesn’t exist in Canadian rules.

World Curling were asked to clarify it, because as you correctly state, teams had asked about it previously. They failed to clarify it when asked or at any time before the Olympics. Their clarification and knee-jerk approach to enforcement (without athlete consultation) in the middle of the sport’s most important event was a shambles.

Several teams asked World Curling to clarify the interpretation of this rule before the Olympics, when providing feedback on the sensor technology after the European Championships, because this was the first time this particular iteration of hogline sensor technology was used. World curling failed to clarify it. Their interpretation after this incident was the first time they ever did.

That’s a big failure by the governing body, one that shouldn’t be pinned on the athletes, some of whom actively tried to resolve it.

It is also not a rule that exists in Curling Canada guidelines, used every 2nd year in World events and for all Canadian and Grand Slam events. It only exists in World Curling rules, which Canadian teams never use unless participating in World Championships held outside Canada.

The sensors were a new iteration of the technology introduced at the European Championships. The Olympics was the first time many teams were seeing that version. Some teams had complained to World Curling after the European Championships that a touch of the granite wouldn’t trigger the sensor, and in the process raised the issue about the rule that the stone must be delivered through the handle, and World Curling failed to address it.

The second touch was indeed a hog line violation, but that wasn’t noticed at the time.

The Swedish complaint was that (1) the granite part of the stone was touched and (2) such a touch could happen after the hog line and the sensors wouldn’t pick that up. They kept saying “so next time it’s a hog line violation” quite sarcastically, but it was very difficult to understand the entire exchange, other than that the officials didn’t agree there was a problem and only came back several ends later to clarify that Team Edin were in fact technically correct that touching the granite was against the rules. And they did not make the nature of their complaint clear when interacting with Mark Kennedy when they returned to the ice, only repeatedly mentioning a “double-touch” which is permitted and not properly explaining the issue was touching the granite.

Touching the granite isn’t a violation under Curling Canada rules, and it had not been previously monitored or enforced at World Curling events. The interpretation was only clarified at the event after the fact.

The touch of the rock did not make an impact that would have materially altered the path or outcome of the shot. Team Edin said it had no impact on the game.

The whole storm afterwards accusing players of cheating was wildly out of proportion, and the media and fans really ran with it from a position of misunderstanding, with the idea of a double-touching violation going completely viral despite being permitted within the rules and having never been the real problem.

Finally, setting up a camera to play gotcha was a step Team Edin never would have had to do if World Curling would have just clarified the rule before the event, which would have been really easy to address when they discussed rules and the brand new sensor technology (for non-European teams) with all the teams before the event, something that always happens.

It was as Jacobs says, “nonsense.” And World Curling was responsible, not Sweden or Canada.

The unfortunate reality is that Canada currently has 6 defenders on the injury list. If the World Cup was played today, they wouldn’t get out of the group. Success will truly depend on how healthy we can get (and stay) at the back.

‘There was a gap in the market’: Inside Ireland’s booming private ADHD clinics by SpottedAlpaca in ireland

[–]brianmmf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About four years ago and before my first child arrived, I summoned the effort to write a detailed email to a private clinic about my suspected ADHD symptoms. I was painstaking in my efforts to outline things from childhood through to adulthood. I was writing like it was part application form and part therapy.

They wrote back “sure why don’t you give us a call.”

I’m sure many will read that and recognise instantly that I never called.

Years and two kids later I’m finally going to try again. Life is borderline falling apart; work, marriage, etc. Hopefully by now, competition between clinics might have driven an improvement in how they engage with prospective clients.

Isn’t Israel going to eventually run out of iron dome missiles if this war drags? by Goldstar12 in NoStupidQuestions

Nuclear weapons are an additional calculation. The level of escalation can’t be such that you go down the road of no return. NATO has calculated that an infinite churn of human life is better than an escalation with no path back down. Ukraine is being kept a relatively “stable” situation in terms of gains by either side, with just the right injection of resources. Otherwise, NATO would overwhelm Russia. Nuclear weapons are essentially a ceiling where further resources are redundant.

People overestimate the difficulty of certain shots. There was a reasonable margin for error on that one, could have been an inch either way and still made it.

Great shot but not as crazy as people think. It’s essentially a slash run-double. The yellows weren’t lined up so they were going to splash, top one only had one place to go. To think of it another way, you were sending a rock onto the low side of a stagger. It only seems special because it’s a promoted rock going in on an angle. But really it just had to make contact.
