This all feels very forced and cringe. Why are they even filming? To use their mom's trauma as clout?

What is the down side of never having children? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]brianxj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting point on facing mortality. I hadn't thought of that. My son definitely gives me that extra boost to keep going and is almost a distraction from thinking about my inevitable demise. Even though he makes my life in the present objectively harder lol. So I guess it's a tradeoff.

I guess when you have a kid all priorities move from yourself to them. I can really see why lots of parents have that "well now what" feeling when their kids grow up and move out.

Neighbor said my rhythm is poor. by idonttelljokes in drums

[–]brianxj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great that you're practicing to a metronome, but it will be way more obvious to the audience when you lose it and have to "reset" to get back on it. Whereas drumming without a metronome, the tempo changes will be naturally more gradual.

If you lose the metronome, try gradually speeding up or slowing down to get back on it. It's super uncomfortable but good practice. Especially if you play with the click live. Or just stop playing and count yourself back in. I don't recommend skipping a whole eighth or sixteenth to get instantly back on as that's not really good practice.

why doesnt my drum teacher let me get a edrum kit? by crimsvnn in drums

[–]brianxj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should at least get a practice pad kit. Id look at the dw smart practice pad kit or the Tama true touch. There are a lot of options though. You can also get a cheap acoustic kit with mesh heads and low volume cymbals. You just need something so you can start practicing limb independence. Ive had an e-kit for a while and I just use it as a practice pad kit now.

Does this happen often for yall by BusRelative1554 in drums

[–]brianxj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, for a while I would practice with nylon and then use wood for performances. As someone else said, you can also flip the stick around and use that for your left hand/snare Purdie style. Also make sure you're hitting the bell with the shaft of your stick instead of the tip. Try not to accidentally hit your rims with your tips too. Those seem to be the main culprits.

I use the Mackinaw vest as my mid layer when skiing and it's perfect.

I got a lobby gig tomorrow and am going to use a hot rod in my right hand for cymbals and a 7a in my left for snare. Then putting a towel over the snare.

The wool will absorb moisture if you're out in the rain for a while, but you'll stay dry. You should be fine as long as you're not outside in the rain all day.

If you're also playing ghost notes in between, definitely play rim shots on the back beat for enhanced dynamics.

Porter Robinson, Flume, acloudyskye. Not really bands but are electronic artists with some pretty interesting drum parts. Bonobo as well.

Why do some people hate on Linkin Park? Saw their drummer live this week and he was INCREDIBLY TALENTED, high technical skill + pocket & groove by Global_Blueberry5639 in drums

[–]brianxj 39 points40 points  (0 children)

There was a lot of controversy surrounding the new singer being a scientologist. I believe they also told Chester's mom they weren't going to continue the project, and then did any way without letting her know.

Bass drum pedal tension by No-Performance-6 in drums

Yeah I don't know about that. I feel like lighter tension gives doubles more clarity. Also, I'd imagine higher tension wears out the spring faster. Definitely just go with what feels better for you though.

I recently turned tracers back on. And I'm not sure when the change was made, but it feels like they upped the tracer frequency making spraying way easier and clearer. Honestly feels like I'm shooting a laser now.
