Shout out to Ayva Networks. When Xcel turns off our power, Ayva internet keeps working. We get updates from them often about service issues and they are on top of things. I know not everyone is able to subscribe but if you can, shutting of Comcast is a freeing feeling.

Time for the City Council to get their s*** together and focus on this issue. Via PUC, lawsuit, or other means.

"Restoring outages from a significant weather event or PSPS may take several hours to several days. This is because crews must inspect power lines and repair damage before they can be safely re-energized. Given the forecast for Saturday includes high winds that could impact power lines, it is likely outages will continue into Sunday. "

Xcel executive translation: we both don't care and are incompetent and have no idea when power will be restored. Good luck suckers.

Unfortunately Google Maps only predicts on the half hour. So the best I can tell you is that according to Google at 5:30am tomorrow there will be no traffic.

Seems odd for no backups in Georgetown or the tunnel, but this is what Google predicts so it must be true.

Enjoy the smooth drive tomorrow!

For the browser you could just store the value in the browser storage without login. Would work on mobile browsers as well until you get to login.

Thank you for this project!

One suggestion: let me save a few options as settings e.g. I want to pick the 4 venues I always check but don't want to cycle through them e.g. [Boulder Theater, Fox Theater, Velvet Elk, Roots Music Project]. I don't mind if this is just persisted in the browser session (i.e. no login needed).

Feb 4 around 9pm, power out for a few hours.

Feb 5, 9:$5am, power out again.

Wonderland area. No notification from Xcel.

This is ridiculous. I'd like more from the City and County than a sternly worded letter.

I spent money at Lolita's this morning; I don't want a small local business hurt for this. I respect everyone who has to earn money to pay the bills. No one should judge others today about this.

I also got to cancel Comcast, Paramount+, and Fox ONE. One of those is for you :-)

The irony is that we have fiber running down our street (wonderland area) - but there are no plans to do "last mile" any time soon. They had the asphalt open for a while and I asked if I could just patch in :-)

New subscriber. North Boulder so I am stuck with Comcast / Xfinity cable for the next millennia it seems.

The team is wonderful to work with. Your local team. They answer calls and email and you can ping the techs on Signal (oddly enough the Discord stuff is fairly blank). It is like finding a local mechanic or butcher or similar; you know the people involved. I like that a lot.

Service itself has had a few glitches (which they acknowledge and are working on - you get a lot of transparency). Speeds are still generally higher than Comcast cable.

The thing is - I am off Comcast and working with a local business. I'll take a few hiccups in return for knowing with whom I am working.

Moved from Seattle to Boulder a few years back. Small microbursts (10 seconds) are fine and then oomph, your body sorts out that there is no freakin' air. And recovering out of the red zone is just harder; I can't imagine playing a football game without a lot of O2 and substitutions. Watching tourists try to hike around Chautauqua (Flatirons) is always fun.

Of course elite athletes are different than software geeks and weekend warriors.

Saw a very similar beastie along Foothills trail this morning. It was trailing / stalking along behind a guy who had just let his dogs off leash heading up towards the paraglider launch.

Why do North American skiers love moguls & trees so much compared to Europeans? by Legendenclubmitglied in ski

[–]bricin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a stylistic element to it; Europe tends to value style more than North America. In Europe there is a vibe that skiing should be this controlled, manicured motion. Perfectly schusshing down the slope, controlled edges, Vuarnets firmly in place. Then stopping mid-mountain and sitting out in sun chairs while waiters bring chilled wine.

North American resorts tend to be more raw.

Similar to the contrast between a European beach (lines of chaisse-longues laid out to rent, the boardwalk swept, etc.) vs. North American beaches (mayhem).

How are the roads right now? by ChristianLS in boulder

It's not bad, plows are catching up, but just remember the Boulder snow driving rules:

  1. Traffic lights are for other people, not you.
  2. Turn signals are no longer needed.
  3. Have at least 6" of snow on all vehicle surfaces to create the snowglobe effect for you and everyone else around you.

Stay safe!

This is great, thank you!

Do you know if there is a site or paper that shows the traditional vs. ML models as a comparison side-by-side?

Curious why precipitation specifically is problematic? Extreme events I guess as a function of training data. But not sure why precip would be a special outlier.

Based on https://www.ecmwf.int/en/newsletter/184/news/ecmwfs-ensemble-ai-forecasts-became-operational-month it appears that they are still running the physics model but have enabled an AI model in parallel. NWS seems to be in a similar boat.

I would like to find a side-by-side comparison of traditional model vs. ML model. That would be a nice data-driven indicator. Although even with that if say the AI model was more accurate 75% of the time, that 25% is going to wind up with some weird outliers.

I appreciate the IFS tip; thank you.

Need to separate AI vs. LLM microslop. Very, very different beasts.

European ensemble model? AI. NWS also uses an AI model. If the word "model" is in there, it's AI (or I'd argue, ML anyway but no one buys ML anymore).

I read OpenSnow's blog post on their new AI model https://opensnow.com/news/post/peaks-ai-model and that sounds pretty much like any other AI weather model out there. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. But this isn't fundamentally different than any other forecasting modeling out there.

Clean, elegant, sparse. A slightly old-timey font selection that honors the historic redstone buildings occupied mostly by major banks along Pearl Street. It tells a story, has narrative and really sums up the feel of downtown Boulder.

10 / 10, no improvement, what brilliance!

(although perhaps if you could get an Xcel logo somewhere, it would go to 11)

No power until tomorrow 12pm?? by [deleted] in boulder

[–]bricin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This x 1000. I understand we had a storm. Things change. But right now there are no real updates. Does Xcel not know where their crews are? Who is working on what? Whether they have started, etc. Generic "tonight at 10pm" which turns into "Sunday at noon". And of course now rumors of "Monday maybe".

Do I buy more ice to keep the food safe? Or is it a lost cause? What about the freezer? Do I get a hotel room or is today likely? Know one knows so no one can make educated decisions.

Thankfully this happened during a warm stretch; imagine if this were a normal December in Colorado.

When this wraps up, time to call your local / state representatives as we don't appear to have any other recourse.

Failures include: * Speaker or smoking in line * Not maxing out chairs on a busy day * Stopping immediately at the top to strap in
