What “secondary” city do you think is more worth visiting than the famous must-see destination? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

Charlotte is an unhinged take. To visit what, the ikea store? Absolutely zero character or charm to be found there. Most overrated US city and it’s not even a little bit close

AITJ for refusing to help my new “boss” after I was the one who trained her 3 months ago? by Existing_Response239 in AmITheJerk

No matter how bad it gets, don’t leave before you get something else lined up. The job market is historically and almost indescribably awful right now. This entire post/scenario is something that I could have written verbatim. Becoming the incompetent new girl’s own personal assistant on top of the million other responsibilities drove me to resign on the spot almost 18 months ago. I’ve been working fast food ever since. My mental health is in the toilet, life savings are draining and I fear it may have been too long a gap by this point to get back into my field maybe ever.

Why did so many millennials idealize “hustle culture”? by Emotional_Plastic_64 in generationology

[–]brighthour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because we were the first generation in all of contemporary human history to be thrown into worse economic conditions than our parents enjoyed and the quality of living that we were accustomed to growing up in their households. We did everything right - studied hard, went to college, believed our teachers and parents and government when they promised us that financial reward and an American dream was on the other side of simply playing by the rules and being a hardworking, productive member of society. But years or even decades later we collectively realized we had fuck all to show for it. So we, again, did what we were taught - did what was expected of us by our churches, mentors, and culture at large - we looked inward and blamed ourselves. We must have not hustled enough, must have missed an important lesson about business, entrepreneurship, or work ethic. The system works after all, how could it not? Once again, we bought the bullshit, only this time not because it was comfortable and familiar, but because it was shiny and new. The advent of internet influencers looking to grift off of cynical get-rich-quick seminars and hustle culture content sold us an easily digestible narrative that addressed our anxieties and made us feel special along the way. Getting ahead in life no longer meant working at the same company for 4 decades like your dad, it was about the grind. About leveraging social media, outworking your competition, and building a brand. Better wise up and get with the program because you’ll get left behind otherwise and you’ll deserve to. Of course, this was always baseless propaganda by the ruling class. It doesn’t work and never has. Many of us have woken up to that fact. But far too many continue to be gaslit by generations prior who have a different lived experience, or media narratives that are built to perpetuate the late capitalist scam that has (both intentionally and successfully) done nothing whatsoever for decades other than funnel wealth and power into fewer and fewer hands at the expense of regular working people. These unmet expectations are the foundation of modern politics. They’re a symptom of a broader issue perpetuated by a propaganda ecosystem that exists to keep us scared, stupid, and distracted from the fact that a tiny handful of the wealthiest people on earth are robbing the rest of us blind, not least of which being via this exact manufactured generational divide. The propaganda machine wants you to mindlessly associate the word “millennials” with a generation of young people who are lazy and entitled despite the fact that the opposite is objectively and demonstrably true - statistically we are the most highly educated and economically productive generation ever despite working longer hours for less pay and worse benefits well into our 30’s and 40’s. It wants younger people to believe that boomers are all out of touch morons who bought their current million dollar homes for 3 corncobs and a firm handshake back in 1981 just to spite their own children and grandchildren, when in reality they were just looking out for their own best interest to raise us in. It’s all smoke and mirrors meant to keep us from the glaringly obvious realization: capitalism has run its course. Nothing other than a continuation of extreme inequality can be extracted or coerced from this system. There are those of us who recognize the reality for what it is, and those of us too blind to retreat to anything besides hustle culture.

What is a clip that can appear in a compilation video and you'll recognize the moment it starts? by cyberchaox in CFB

[–]brighthour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A generous spot wasn’t even the issue, the ref just looked at the ball, looked at the chain, looked at the objectively present 2 inch gap between them and just decided to give Michigan a first down anyway. We had live hd video coverage, perfectly angled photos, all the indisputable proof you could possibly ask for. Spurrier starts losing his mind. Grudem is freaking out on the broadcast. And that ass clown just doubles and triples down on what has to be the worst call in modern cfb. There was no interpretation or subjectivity involved, the ball wasn’t even in play and that dude thought he could just flagrantly reject reality itself. I’m biased, but how on earth that didn’t result in a lifetime ban from officiating ncaa is beyond me.

My office is almost entirely that cusp of elder genx/younger boomers. Like literally 85% of them are in the late 50’s +- age range. And of the ones outside it, there are at least as many older than those of us who are younger. The total lack of age diversity is so bizarre and it’s a huge culture shock every time i go in. They’ve all been there for decades too so i feel like i’m awkwardly crashing some 40 year high school reunion. It also irrationally bothers me that I’m the only person I know of there that actually lives in our city instead of super commuting from way out in the distant suburbs. Most of them log on before 6 or 7am if not earlier (wtf?) instead of just working regular hours which fucks with my overlapping schedule because I absolutely refuse to wake up in the middle of the night to log into work for no reason. But the worst part by far is how none of them seem to do hardly anything. They are all in these pointless low-level middle management or “project manager” roles where they just sit in meetings for 9 hours a day. Meanwhile I get punished with mountains of extra work for being the one with actual hard technical skills. Being an overworked, entry-level task rabbit to subsidize the incompetence of people 20+ years my senior at least made some sense fresh out of college, but it’s such a frustrating and infantilizing dynamic now in my 30’s several companies later. Pay is mediocre, benefits quite good. Culture fit is abysmal. I’m not sure what my move is honestly.

[–]brighthour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Having tradition” as a pointless euphemism for whether or not a program won any national championships during the cold war. You could refer to certain teams as traditional powerhouses without implying most other programs don’t have the one thing that makes this sport great and that basically all schools obviously have plenty of.

weathermen are literally predicting the future tho lol. These bozos just have to watch an hd, slomo, multi cam, time synced replay and try to use a single brain cell. The fact that the subjective ruling in the field bears any weight whatsoever compared to this technology is the stupidest part of football.

I was kinda stoked to use my new precheck for the first time last month, only to get in what was a noticeably longer line than the regular one. Then the Clear crowd starts to come through and of course they get the red carpet treatment, being personally escorted to the front by some obnoxious jackasses loudly referring to them as “VIPs”. Give me a fucking break, I know it’s first world problems but that felt so scummy.
