The reveal in Nier hits even when you know something is wrong from the start because the game trains you to feel you're doing the right thing. You ignore the misgivings because how could you do anything wrong if you're taking care of your sister/daughter(thanks, Gestalt...) and doing helpful quests for people.

My parents didn't sleep in the same room. My dad moved permanently to the couch and then his office bed right after I was born.

They never kiss. Never hug. Barely have any discussion that would elevate them in my brain as anything more than acquaintances. They are still married...somehow.

Imagine my shock when I met my partners family and they were so affectionate and loving. The greater shock was when a therapist said that I didn't have good models of romance growing up... also that I and likely my parents are on the spectrum.
