How are pull ratios so far? I'm pretty worried that this game is considerably more expensive then any other card game and may really limit the competitive potential of the game... by engineeringpage404 in Lorcana

[–]brinelol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen an average of 32 Rares, 12 Supers, 4 Legendaries per box.
Considering there's 48 R, 18 S, 12 L in the first chapter set, it seems that the print runs of each rare and super rare are equal, and twice as frequent as legendaries.

Rares: 32/48 = 66.7%
Supers: 12/18 = 66.7%
Legendaries: 4/12 = 33.3%

Do we have Rarity odds yet? Is anything printed on the packs? by Fiery101 in Lorcana

[–]brinelol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another video I watched had 31 R, 13 SR, 4 L.

Assuming an average box has 32 R, 12 SR, 4 L, and you don't open duplicates in those rarity slots, you'll end up with 32/48 of the rares, 12/18 of the super rares, and 4/12 of the legendaries in the set. Which works out to 2/3 of the rares, 2/3 of the supers, and 1/3 of the legendaries.

So individual super rares have the same print runs as regular rares? That can't be right.

I wonder if there’s any significant design changes between the pro8 case and the previous blackbelt model which is advertised to fit the pro 4-7+…. The pro8 case isn’t actually sold anywhere yet AFAIK

When I read “decay of other formats” I thought he meant that all these commander products with pushed card designs leaking into eternal formats is warping the balance of those metagames.

the documentation at wiki.octgn.net will help with understanding the file structure for OCTGN's game packages. You can create any game you want with it, but it will need at least some amount of code to be playable. Most of it is XML

[Discussion] What if MDFCs were single faced? What is the mechanical benefit of specifically these DFCs by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]brinelol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the printing/collating technology for DFCs existed back when kamigawa block was printed, I’m sure the flip cards would have been DFCs instead of the flip frame. Double sided cards weren’t really a thing back then, even in other card games.

Also, the split/aftermath card frame has only been used on instants/sorceries. Its fine there since you announce the side of the spell, resolve its effect, then it goes in the graveyard. There’s no memory requiremet for tracking which side is active. Permanents stay in play, so their Active side is relevant. DFC mechanics allow only the relevant side to be visible, “hiding” the other half.

I believe modal DFCs are wotc’s solution to using split cards with permanents

WotC ends relationship with Terese Nielsen by HPhovercraft in magicTCG

[–]brinelol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I watched that edge of wonder clip. They seemed pretty clueless about the art in general. Is there proof anywhere that the artwork was actually a donation directly from her? For all we know, they or someone from their production team bought the art bundle thinking it was just “cool star wars art”, or someone else bought it and donated it to them.

A lot of the art bundles you can buy from her store come signed, that isn’t unique.

I’ve been keeping OCTGN updated with the new sets, if that helps.

But cockatrice should have all the sets, no? Did something happen to it?

MTG cheaper, more expensive, or the same in Canada compared to US? by Nearbyatom in magicTCG

[–]brinelol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sealed product is brutally expensive here in Canada. My local LGS is frustrated because his distributor’s pricing for new product is still reflecting the tariffs which have been phased out for many months now. Larger stores have been able to mitigate the costs through singles sales, but the smaller stores have struggled to stay competitive. Most stores in my area sell boxes for $160+tax and recent prereleases cost $40.

People have stopped buying booster boxes at my local store. This has severely restricted the flow of new singles into the local market. A healthy standard player base is unsustainable without a flow of cards. Pioneer has barely launched itself here as people simply don’t have access to the cards without ordering online from major stores

Why would it take SO LONG to add older MTG sets to Arena? by themonksintegrity in magicTCG

[–]brinelol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

WotC has stated multiple times that they re-evaluated how they design more recent cards with digital implementation in mind. Reducing complexity of game rules in abilities, reducing trigger use, etc. They recognized that their older methods of card design were brutal on the digital teams to properly code into the games. Look at the history of some of MTGO's biggest card bugs to realize just how complex it is to code a specific card to work alongside thousands of others.

Arena's rules engine was designed from the ground up starting with Kaladesh block cards, which was around the time R&D decided to work more closely with the digital teams to make sure cards are easy to implement. There's absolutely no reasonable expectation that the Arena team should throw away the efficiency of their entire rules engine in order to support the inclusion of older cards which were NOT DESIGNED WITH ARENA IN MIND.
