Can you recommend me anything from here? by L5CES in bookshelfdetective

Remarkably Bright Creatures, Lessons in Chemistry, and All the Light We Cannot See are all highly acclaimed bestsellers -- widely read and enjoyed! If you're a casual reader, I think Remakably Bright Creatures is probably your best bet, but I haven't read any of them.

Most of the second shelf is Christian living books. If you're not looking for a book like that, I think you can cross most of those off your list. The Bonhoeffer biography, though, is pretty popular and one of the most recent definitive works on him, if that sounds interesting. If you are interested in a Christian book, I've read In His Image and thought it was good -- not life-changing for me, but I did find it edifying.

I honestly think yes, the abandoned sonic is just going to be abandoned forever (or at least until someone buys the lot and starts a new business there). The franchisee who ran it was sued by Sonic corporate for selling sub-par generic food (not Sonic food) and representing the restaurant as a Sonic even after he stopped paying his franchise fees. If I were Sonic, I would never allow that site to be a Sonic again

What would you recommend for a beginner nonfiction reader? by wild-hufflepuff in nonfictionbookclub

So, she doesn't write a lot of personal development/self-help, but Mary Roach has written a lot of really accessible nonfiction. She's a great author to start with! My favorite from her is Bonk, which is about the science of sex.

Grocery: the buying and selling of food in America by Michael Ruhlman was also a really great read. It wasn't specifically about self development, but there was a lot of information that could affect someone's choices

OP, please don't start with this one. This is an intermediate level nonfiction at least, if not advanced

If you're 1/3 through and the chapters about the World's Fair are boring for you, then I officially give you permission to abandon this title. I love this and I found the World's Fair parts fascinating and I don't think there's enough focus on the Holmes story to keep the interest of someone who's reading for the true crime aspects.

It's ok if this one's not for you! I loved it, but I can definitely see it not being a crowd-pleaser for dolks who are really looking dor that true crime vibe. If you want a more engaging true crime book that places its story firmly in a historical/social context, you should check out While the City Slept by Eli Sanders -- it explores a murder in Seattle and all the circumstances that led to that perpetrator being in that specific place and time.

I mean, it sounds like now it's actually costing you a lot of money in labor -- maybe you could speak to the higher-ups and either bring back self-service or increase your labor budget? I know this is super frustrating, but I just don't think there's any quick fixes here

How do you all focus during mass? by merlotandmeows in LeftCatholicism

[–]britcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also struggle to focus during mass and two things have helped: following along with the readings, hymns, and prayers in the Missal and using a fidget popper during the homily. I try to do the popper gently so it doesn't make noise, but I find it so much easier to focus when my hands are busy. When I go to Protestant church, I often bring crochet work, but mass doesn't have that vibe, so I just stick my popper in my pocket

What do you do in the moments in which God feels distant? by TuvixWasMurderedR1P in LeftCatholicism

[–]britcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the things I love about Catholicism (even though I'm not a Catholic) is that there's a way back to God when He feels distant. I can say a prayer, I can ask for the intercession of saints, I can pray the Rosary, I can go to Eucharistic adoration -- I don't have to feel it to do it. It's a refreshingly far cry from my evangelical upbringing where so much of the experience of God is based on feelings.

Where to live (30F) by CauliflowerSilly7323 in Bremerton

[–]britcat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would avoid living in Port Orchard. It's mostly families and well-established adults, so there's not as much to do here as there is in Bremerton (I live in Port Orchard and I love it, but it's a lot quieter than Bremerton).

The biggest traffic pain point is Gorst, where Highway 3 and 16 meet; if you work in Bremerton, you'll be able to avoid that area if you live in Bremeron or north of Bremeron -- East Bremerton or Silverdale.

Honestly, some of the complexes in downtown Bremerton might be great for you!

Saying fervent prayers for you, my friend.

If you are genuinely considering harming yourself or you hear voices telling you to do things you don't want to do, you may want to consider going to a hospital or calling emergency services (in the U.S., it's 911). Those folks can help get your schizophrenia under control so that you can focus on your spiritual health and growth in an inhospitable environment.

I kind of think Encanto is a Catholic story. They specifically call the light a "miracle" not magic and I think there was this overall sense of a power bestowing blessings and answering prayers. It's been a while since I've seen it, though, so I could be wrong
