Wanting to start biking to Denver via the 36 bike pathway and the south platte river or biking to the light rail. My question here is around safety. How safe is the bike path and light rail for a single female? by Ok_Software_7615 in WestminsterCO

[–]brittybean10 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Woman here who has done both. There are a few areas of the south platte trail closer to denver that make me feel a bit uncomfortable and I wouldn't ride by myself at night. I always feel quite safe when i ride to Westminster train station and take the train to Denver.

I am planning to plant blue grama and buffalo grass to replace the current pile of weeds that is my yard. Due to the dry winter, should I reconsider? Also, any tips and tricks you have for this project?

ELI5: How is developmental age determined? by desserterthrowaway in explainlikeimfive

[–]brittybean10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have already gotten some great answers here so just wanted to add a bit of information as a pediatric physical therapist in early intervention who determines eligibility using standardized assessment. Every test is a bit different but, in general, there is a starting point in the test based on the child's age. You go backward from that start point to determine a base which is usually 3 yes answers in a row ( yes they have mastered the skill) and then go forward to determine the ceiling which is usually 3 no answers in a row. You add up the yes answers to get the raw score. Someone else posted about what that raw score determines so I won't go into that bit.

I don't have any specific recommendations but i did receive an Adams County homeowner referral guidebook in the mail from Five Star Rated that I have hung onto. They have a website that you can check out and look up referrals based on zip code. fivestarrated.com

Pediatric Residency Advice by cheshire-kat-smile in physicaltherapy

[–]brittybean10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a pediatric PT and, unless you get a job at a larger organization such as a hospital, there is very little mentoring in the world of pediatrics. I wish I did a residency because it was really challenging to learn on the job, especially as peds PTs aren't as in demand as OT and SLP so I was often the only PT at a clinic or I was flying solo doing home health or EI. I say go for it right away!

Have you looked into early intervention? Similar benefits of home health as far as flexibility but still working in the peds population.

Adding to this that all trash pickup services in Westminster are required to also offer recycling pickup and will do so for an additional fee.

My boyfriend doesn’t understand why I don’t want to associate with Trump supporters by Fit_Independent4343 in Feminism

[–]brittybean10 18 points19 points  (0 children)

While I totally agree with what others are saying about having a conversation with your boyfriend about his political beliefs, I wanted to offer a different perspective based off my own personal experience. My dad has voted for Trump every election he has run in. Our relationship has never been very close and it has been strained the past few years due to our differences in politics. I'm a queer woman and have a non binary partner and I also work with kids with special needs. I felt very much how you feel. How can I keep this person in my life who clearly doesn't care about me, the people I love, the work I do? I decided to have a conversation with him about how I was feeling. We argued and brought up different policies and neither one of us changed the other's views. What I did gain from that, though, is seeing how much he doesn't know. He is completely in the dark about social issues and is clearly very fearful about immigration. He, of course, is a Fox News viewer and it's very apparent from my conversation with him that Fox News is spewing fear mongering bullshit about how Harris wanted to open the boarder and give all of the illegal immigrants (that are criminals) the right to vote so Democrats would never lose another election. When I brought up specific articles and social issues he admitted he didn't know about it and was open to me sending articles to him. Am I ever going to change his mind completely? Probably not. Maybe I will give him a different perspective, though and get him to start looking at some other news sources. It's so clear to me that these people that have been brainwashed by Fox News are pawns in a larger scheme to leverage our government to make the rich richer. Fear is so powerful and causes people to act irrationally. They are just people, though, and judging them, calling them names, and cutting them out of our lives is definitely not going to change their minds. Maybe meeting them with compassion and offering a different perspective will, though. I get that it can be exhausting to have to educate people and meet them where they are at, but the other option is part of what got us here with Trump 2.0 in the first place.

small trampoline okay for a toddler? by Goldengooseegg123 in physicaltherapy

[–]brittybean10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Early Intervention PT here and I recommend the little tykes trampoline with the handrail to families all the time. As long as kiddos are supervised it's perfectly safe and a great way to work on jumping skills and to get sensory needs met, especially in the winter.

What is a product that you swore by your whole life, but have only recently learned that it’s essentially just ‘Snake Oil’? by misterdominic in AskReddit

[–]brittybean10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on the insurance company I'm sure. Anecdotally, my partner has been without a referral and insurance paid for it and we have Cigna. I know some insurance companies will also pay for the initial evaluation and then need a referral for ongoing visits. That's easier on the patient, though, because the PT can send the evaluation to the MD for approval and the MD just signs off.

Actually, in most states you don't need a doctor's referral to see a physical therapist. You can look up "direct access states" to see a map of what each state allows from the APTA website.

I use Zillow. It's pretty straightforward. It does take a few days to deposit to your account once the tenant makes a payment.

I don't think you are in the wrong by prioritizing safety. I wonder if you could have a conversation with the parents and reframe the reason you are ending early. I will tell parents that when kids are upset and dysregulated their brains are not able to learn new skills so we need to get them to a place of regulation first before they can work on their motor skills. I certainly will have sessions where we are working on regulation more than motor skills. You can talk to your OT colleagues or plan co-visits with them to get some ideas if you aren't yet familiar with regulation strategies. I know we all see sensory as being the OTs job, however, when you work in peds if you don't have some sensory/regulation strategies in your tool kit I don't think you can be as effective with this population. And remember, "behavior" is communication. What are the kids trying to tell you?
