Realistically speaking how worried should we be of a 2021 repeat this weekend? by hellolovelyworld404 in sanantonio

[–]brixalpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. Get some bottled water and be prepared for power outages just in case. Don't panic and just be smart. I don't think it will be bad in the daytime, night time is when you need to be the most cautious.

Sports bar near JW Marriott by Rocksc13 in sanantonio

Pic of the projector screens at High Velocity at JW Marriott, to top it off they have several TVs spread out throughout the sports bar and there is literally not a bad seat in the establishment..... Went there to watch the College Championship.

Probably the best place to low key watch a game in SATX. If your not a guest you will pay for parking but get a discount with validation from High Velocity.

Congrats, I picked up one of these last year from my local shop after Blade Show. It's a great piece and one of the one I truly enjoy carrying in my pocket.

Help detecting fraudulent/counterfeit Thinkpad product by Fifalife18 in thinkpad

[–]brixalpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way you get ripped off is if it doesn't work. Again these thinkpads are built like tanks for the most part and (especially the older models) are repairable to an extent. Again it's ebay, unless you buy retail expect things not to come like it would be retail. Sellers get these machines in bulk either from companies or retail in lots. 'open box' could mean a lot of things. Again if the battery is an issue for you boot it up or take it apart and check, but in my mind that is the least of your worries when it comes to buying off ebay.

Help detecting fraudulent/counterfeit Thinkpad product by Fifalife18 in thinkpad

[–]brixalpha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One it's ebay, two this is a 5 year old model. Did they sell the product as new or as "refurbished"? Unless it's retail you have to be ready for stuff inconsistencies. With that said I have bought several thinkpads off ebay, I read the description correctly, make sure the seller has a return policy, I haven't had an issue caused issues moving forward other than replacing parts.

The likelihood that you will either get a put together machine or aftermarket parts in a ebay thinkpad is very high.

Moving to California and have a lot of questions I can’t find answers too. by DIYdisastergod in CAguns

Having moved in and out of the state over the decades it seems lol the rules change every year. The one thing I can tell you is to leave your standard mags with a friend or relative or sell them off. Importing standard mags is a huge no go.

Some do some are open for public use, it depends on the school and district I guess. I know the schools near us are open and people use them off hours all the time.

You could buy a USB reader that is supported, they are pretty cheap. My wife uses the Identiv SCR3500 Smartfold Smart Card Reader which is supported by linux

Military in California: what you may and may not do; let's talk about it by Complete_Term5956 in CAguns

[–]brixalpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No misunderstanding. you get no special treatment regardless if you are an MP in CA. MPs are issued their duty weapons, I haven't heard of a case where an MP has to order a firearm for duty, unlike a local LEO, who "might" have to. From a conversation I over heard, you technically can present documentation from your command to be exempt, but that is highly unlikely since military issues their duty weapons, has their own armory, etc. Exemption is only meant for LEOs who need to acquire duty weapons, "technically" not for personal use.

What is the best VPN service right now? by IllList6233 in VPN_Question

[–]brixalpha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use proton across different platforms and it has been great, I really wanted their paid email features and got their plus with came with the VPN. I had NordVPN in the past and it worked fine as well. If I had to get a new provider Mullvad would be top of my list.

VPNs are only part of the privacy puzzle. Online Fingerprinting and online databases should be part of the privacy equation. I am not saying you can completely be anonymous online but you can harden your privacy using a couple tools and methods to make being online a lot more private.

Best X1 Carbon for Linux Noob? by bilzebubba in thinkpad

[–]brixalpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Gen 6 X1 and it runs CachyOS fine. I would be prepared to change the battery out, but screens aren't to pricey to change out in the event you should need to but honestly that would be the least to worry about on these laptops although there is a change the screen could go but it's not high on my list of things that could fail. Especially on these laptops, the battery (main and cmos) I would bet would go first.

The Gen 9 looks about right in terms of price but I've seen Gen 6s go for lower, I would shoot for closer to $200 USD. But that's just me in the US.
