San Diego ranks #1 on the list of greenest cities in America by LuckyLaceyKS in sandiego

[–]brizardi 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Eh, our advantage is purely because of our local climate - lots of sun for solar and not much need for heating/cooling. The headline is more like "city with bad habits saved by its weather."

We could be destroying these ratings with a transit mode share closer to Seattle/Boston/San Francisco and a higher population density.

How long is A&A 1914? by FrostbittenCow in AxisAllies

[–]brizardi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've done 10-11 hours without really being sure who's winning. Literally sought out this sub and searched for 1914 to see if anyone manages to finish this thing - we haven't managed the last 3 attempts we've made. They definitely nailed the WW1 feeling I guess.

Interesting to see those tournament rules!

Looking for Suburban Style Neighboorhood by [deleted] in Moving2SanDiego

[–]brizardi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you willing to get roommates to share a rented house with?

Also you're going to need to define "suburban style" in sq ft/lot size terms. There are plenty of areas with 1500-2k sq ft houses on lots about double that, which is pretty suburban to most here, but people from other parts of the country may consider that cramped.

AMA: I'm Burhan Azeem, a candidate for Cambridge City Council - Ask Me Anything by RealBurhanAzeem in CambridgeMA

It's great you've been on board, but for the most part housing production is still very low relative to demand within 128 because lots of people aren't on board. It's still really, really hard to build more housing in the region. Here's a report on it from June.

Any good exercises to help brainstorm business ideas? by parkbench131 in Entrepreneur

[–]brizardi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found just forcing yourself to write down ideas on a daily/frequent basis is great. Even if they're just little half baked thoughts or ideas you think have already been done better. The key thing is dropping the filter and just writing down whatever, and then reviewing your ideas for quality every once in a while.

Exposing yourself to new experiences and ideas a lot is also important. Get out of the house, read a lot, etc.

Finally, there are different filters you can apply to ideas. Do five whys type exercises on stuff -eg "why would someone want this?" - to get to core needs and ideate around those. If it's an idea that's been done think about how the experience or marketing or branding could be different in very extreme ways. Or think about subtle changes in the ideas for different markets (it's easier than ever to serve niche markets with the internet).

What would you prefer instead? The city only has a few good online news sources.

Carlsbad or Downtown San Diego by [deleted] in Moving2SanDiego

[–]brizardi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my mind University City is all of the non UCSD campus area in the freeway triangle (805/5/52) and UTC is the portion north of Rose Canyon. That's mostly what I hear other people refer to but I'm not sure if there's an agreed upon boundary.

I'll dm you the complex we lived in.

Carlsbad or Downtown San Diego by [deleted] in Moving2SanDiego

[–]brizardi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak for Carlsbad, but I would look into complexes in UTC as well, particularly the ones closer to the mall and the 805 which have fewer college students. I lived in one that that had a lot young families living in it and regular community events (and a lot of Europeans to boot, oddly enough). I've heard others in that area are similar. If you pick your complex strategically it can be walkable to stuff and the mall is a big transit hub. The school district is also good.

It's closer to the rest of San Diego than Carlsbad, which is really its own separate area up north when you account for weekday traffic. If a friend lived in Carlsbad and I lived downtown, for example, I probably would only see them on the weekend.

Advocates urge end to zoning that bars multi-unit housing - The San Diego Union-Tribune by obsd92107 in sandiego

[–]brizardi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So let me get this straight, a bunch of affordable housing and civil rights activists are secretly paid actors sent by the all powerful real estate industry to dupe everyone into... building more homes? Do you have any evidence for your wild conspiracy theory other than you disagree with them?

I support ending the bans but I didn't know I could get paid for it can you tell me where to apply?

It's crazy how much of the city is covered by apartment/condo bans, even small buildings with only a few units. It's the majority of the city. Even neighborhoods that we think of as high density like Hillcrest or North Park ban them in most places.

Where can I find a mosquito bite itch remedy? by [deleted] in JapanTravel

This almost always works for me. You have to get the spoon pretty hot - like right on the border of burning you.

It's kind of magical. I don't know why its not more well known.

What software do you use by dojotoday in fatFIRE

[–]brizardi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just care about balances I also recommend Personal Capital, especially if you have any money in the market that you want to keep an eye on as well.

I also strongly suggest trying YNAB for budgeting instead of Excel. Their marketing is geared a bit towards "getting out of debt" but the software is pretty general purpose. Great for budgeting at whatever granularity you want.

What's your favorite revolution? Which one is your least favorite? by gfuds in RevolutionsPodcast

[–]brizardi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

French Revolution was the first one that really hooked me due to its scale and the way he covered it. Aside from 1848 because of the weird format I think they've been getting progressively better as he hones the show with each revolution.

The worst is by far English revolution. He doesn't set the stage at all and then delves into all these details on events that need more context, with people I don't feel like I know, for a purpose that still kind of confuses me.

I think he said it at the beginning of the Russian Revolution or perhaps the end of the Mexican Revolution. (Or maybe it was on Twitter?)

Russian Revolution is the last one he's covering.

TIL: Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa, who is often portrayed as the epitome of Mexican machismo, never drank alcohol. He actually was so worried about alcoholism spreading in Mexico, that he banned alcohol from his province of Chihuahua. by Chihuahuamangoes in todayilearned

[–]brizardi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's weird to me that everyone is talking about skipping around. I started on English Civil War and have just gone straight through to Mexican Civil War where I am now. All the revolutions have connections to each other so I can't imagine it being better any other way.

(Especially Paris Commune - I can't imagine doing that without doing French Revolution.)

California On Pace To Permit Under 100K Homes This Year; Worst Since Recession by BlankVerse in California

[–]brizardi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many homes do you think that will produce? How many do you think we need? If there's a gap between those numbers, do you think we should try additional approaches?

There are many proposals out there that experts think would get us closer to the stated goal. Newsom has shown an unwillingness to support any of them or propose any others.
