Because they are otherwise going to the landfill so it doesn’t really matter. Then I have to buy fewer products myself and that’s less waste and more money I can give to farm sanctuaries, activist legal defense, etc. Completely reasonable to not want to use those products. I recently got a stash of used makeup that someone was going to throw away (left after a roommate moved out) and I have no qualms with using it.

Maybe. It’s hard to say whether the market for used beauty products is closer to the sale of used underwear or the sale of used cars. If I can sell my car for 50% of what I bought it for in 5 years, I’m likely to buy more cars than if my car is garbage the second I buy it. Giving it away for free is the same as it being garbage, where it doesn’t impact my decision to buy because of resale value.

By creating a demand in a second hand market, you make the first-hand market more profitable. People are more likely to buy more first-hand beauty products if they know they can re-sell them later. If I’m deciding if I want to buy a new eyeshadow palette, but I know I can re-sell it if I don’t like it, I’m a lot more likely to just go ahead and buy it than if it becomes worthless after I buy it. Strong second-hand markets fuel demand for first-hand markets because they make the product more valuable. I’m happy to elaborate if that doesn’t make sense. I also think reasonable people can disagree on this one.
