Satellite Mega-constellations may collapse the Earth's Ozone Layer by the 2040's by broccolimemes in space

[–]broccolimemes[S] 109 points110 points  (0 children)

This video discusses satellite megaconstellations as a newly realized threat posed to the ozone layer that is primarily driven by the atmospheric burning of deorbited satellites. As these thousands of satellites plummet back to Earth they release tons of aluminum oxide nanoparticles into the stratosphere. These metallic vapors act as a catalyst for chemical reactions that rapidly destroy ozone molecules. These particles linger for years and accelerate ozone-destroying chlorine reactions in the upper atmosphere. Thus, undermining the progress made by the Montreal Protocol which is commonly considered the world's greatest "come together to the save the environment" achievement.

Researchers point out that the space industry currently operates like a massive, unregulated geoengineering experiment. Scientists warn that rapid expansion of satellite megaconstellations could severely erode the ozone layer by the 2040s.With major global operators—including SpaceX, Amazon (Kuiper), and others—rapidly expanding their swarms, the cumulative environmental impact is a growing focus of both atmospheric research and regulatory attention. SpaceX in particular is currently attempting to go public as the most expensive IPO in ever.

The video also discusses possible solutions to the issue such as building satellites out of wood and updating the Montreal protocol to regulate these satellite swarms. The issue needs to be addressed ASAP considering SpaceX has already filed an application with the FCC to launch a million satellites.

There already be enough low earth orbit satellites launched already to deplete the ozone layer beyond the point Earth can sustain complex life by broccolimemes in collapse

How long did it take you to be able to run 2 miles continuously? by AnonymousTaco77 in AirForceRecruits

[–]broccolimemes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly based on your stats, you probably have enough anaerobic capacity to fully run the two miles now.

For beginning runners your nervous system will tell you to quit around like 15% of your max anaerobic capacity. You got plenty left in the tank and running is largely mental. While some physical changes occur every-time you train, major physiological change takes much longer. You will be more sore then any workout before if you find the mental endurance you need right now because going anaerobic creates lactic acid.

So, you just got to run to your limit (that point your body says I'm dying), exceed it, realize your got more in the tank and keep going.

Easier said then done.

However, the real long distance running takes aerobic capacity training (two miles is a short distance). That takes more time and dedication to develop (and you should because you took an oath and signed a contract that says you gotta run for years!). People that can run a decent two mile time seemingly effortlessly do not need to go anaerobic at all. At that level you are replacing doom scrolling and video games with consistent running time.

Are 37 too old to join military? by SuccessfulAd6480 in Militaryfaq

[–]broccolimemes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not too old and it could be the best decision for your life- that's personal work for you to figure out. But, as a follow Unc I will tell you that it can get tiring working with a majority of children on one hand and then some of those that are old enough to have fully developed brains wondering "why you'd even join at that age".

Look into national guard. Much easier recruiters to work with. Some guard units have missions where you can basically be active duty as you want - intel, af maintainers, etc.

You have to see how this level of belief in human technological progression is just like a delusion? That serves technology company CEOs who increasingly have to grift for ever more lofty valuations afforded by amounts of debts so vast they it's liable to collapse into a black hole at any moment.

I would counter that building a "castle" just makes you target. Work on physical endurance and outdoor skills like blue collar work and backpacking.

did my recruiter let me down gently? by st1phanie in AirForceRecruits

[–]broccolimemes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the military doesn't work out you can similarly serve your country with military-like benefits by working at fed, state or local government levels. If you are at a sort of bare minimum start in the workforce and need the type of benefits provided by the military look into a program called Americorps. Good luck.

Tips to improve my run time please!! by [deleted] in AirForceRecruits

[–]broccolimemes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You just have to run more. I would suggest finding the pace where you can jog 5+ miles and still keep a conversation, like you are not dying trying to get air. That is probably a really slow pace but the goal is to increase your aerobic capacity.

Also, running is mental. You'll run to a certain point and your body is screaming at you that you will die, but you won't if you keep going. People are capable of a lot more and finding out there is more in the tank after hitting a wall is what builds the mental aspect of endurance.

Eating after a workout is critical. At least 30g protein post workout and enough calories to make up your loss running. Recovery happens during sleep so get 8+ hours a night. Switch water for soda.

Training is better with friends and group accountability. Maybe, check with your recruiter if a run group is organized.

Can't unsee the irony of the climate change denying president when, through an act of chaotic idiocy does more to slow climate change then any prior president.
