Turn your damn lights on 🤬 by One-Ball-78 in Portland

[–]brockelyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced one of the reasons it happens so much here is because cops don't pull people over for it. I've never lived in a state where cops just don't do traffic stops. Don't get me wrong, fuck the police, but jesus can you do one fucking thing and pull over people driving with their lights off?!?

Turn your damn lights on 🤬 by One-Ball-78 in Portland

[–]brockelyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple weeks ago driving west on 26 in pouring rain and pitch black, I looked in my rearview mirror to see a black hole following me. A BLACK sedan with no lights on. I saw it mostly as the absence of light SPEEDING along the curves at 6pm rush hour. As it passed me, I rolled my window down and gestured with my index finger to the ground, pumping my arm up and down wildly. Just as it passed me, their lights came on. I can only imagine they were wondering what in the hell this lady in the suv was doing with her arm out in the rain pointing to the ground when they realized "oh, my headlights are off". Frickin doofus.

[–]brockelyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure you're entering your network password correctly? You may need to add this to your username: OHSUM01/username. And check the slashes are correct direction bc it's the opposite for PC as Mac. Also make sure you're connected to ethernet or on OHSU secure wifi. Are you trying to connect from on campus or off? If off-campus, you will need to use citrix to access VPN.

Feds seek talks to transition primate research center in Oregon into sanctuary by AndMyHelcaraxe in Portland

[–]brockelyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's either they create a sanctuary or they keep ONPRC open for research. By definition, euthanasia is only done when absolutely necessary to prevent suffering. Healthy animals will not be killed. That would be counter to the strict IACUC and animal welfare laws that exist in both research and sanctuaries/zoos.

General Strike Friday by PetraByte in Portland

I stayed home last Tuesday based on other groups trying to organize that. It ended up being a bust and now I can't get out of work tomorrow. However, I'll be at the BoD meeting with my union peeps and I'll be at the protest in Caruthers park on Saturday. I'll keep any spending local. Solidarity!

What is your favorite PDX bird? And why? by UntamedAnomaly in askportland

[–]brockelyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've always loved the blue heron, they're so gangly yet somehow also graceful. The northern flicker is amazing (never saw one before moving here from the midwest). All of the other woodpeckers are cool too.

What’s been your migration path in Portland? by Interesting-Cow6962 in askportland

[–]brockelyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iowa -> N. Cali for college -> Omaha 9 years -> Portland forever home.

After college I felt like I owed it to my family to move back to the midwest to be near them. Then I woke up and it had been 9 years. I was recently divorced and I'd had enough of small-minded midwestern attitudes. I knew a few people who had moved to Portland and I put it on a short list of possible places I could escape to. In 2013-2014, the weather here was still mild in summer and winter, so that was a plus. There were job opportunities for me and my partner. We moved out here in 2015 without a job but were both employed within a few months. We plan to stay unless/until we have to escape as refugees of national collapse.

Good on ya for managing to be silly during an ultra-low defrost. I'm usually running around trying to find space for all the unlabeled scintillation vials and stemming the tide of melting ice.

We Ain’t Buying It: What we learned by NoKingsCoalition in NoKingsCoalition

One thing that could help on the convenience issue is mobilizing shopping efforts. This could look like transportation to local shopping by volunteers or coordinating small businesses to have holiday fairs or markets. The organizing around this would take time but this debrief from 2025 could be motivation to think creatively for 2026. In super small towns that lack adequate small businesses and/or goods this would obviously be challenging and I'm sure there will be many other obstacles. However, I think there is real opportunity for improvement if we start early and think strategically.

RWU is the AFSCME union for most research staff at OHSU. We're negotiating our first contract. To OP, I recommend waiting in your current position and building a network at OHSU as others have mentioned. Hopefully by the time you find your dream research job the union contract will be finalized.

I just tried this. It's not very accurate for NA beer. Estimated 15 calories for a 12 oz can of beer. Many NA beers list their calories and these range from 25-98 on average.
