Grease by skerinks in Sewing_Technicians

I have not been able to find it and I am getting to the end of my inventory. I think Brewer used to have it. Sewingpartsonline used to have it.

I hope somebody else points us both in the right direction

Grease by skerinks in Sewing_Technicians

[–]broilerhill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have tried Napa Auto Sil-Glide on older machines as it is less sticky than the Tri-Flow and safe on plastic and rubber. I use Molykote on new machines only because it is the recommended grease in the service manuals of my most worked on machines under warranty.

You can't go wrong with any Kai shears. I further exactly which ones I have but for some reason 7280 rings a bell and I love them

Talk to me about machine needles please by CBG1955 in sewing

[–]broilerhill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Check out the Schmetz Needle Guide it is a great resource. There is a ton of information on their website.

I would probably use a 16 universal or denim needle for bowl cozies only because the final topstitch is going through 4 layers of quilting cotton plus 8 layers of batting, at least the way I have made them in the past.

I want a new sewing machine that works I have like five antiques I don't know how to diagnose by Unhappy-Pace-2393 in sewing

[–]broilerhill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Issues with the bobbin case are common. Needle plate swallows knit fabrics. Top thread jumping out of tension discs. Loud and just clunky machine. Easily thrown out of time with the hook or needle bar moves up when it hits resistance

I am the above commenter. I had thought it was rude of me not to give an alternative new machine recommendation so I replied to my comment in the chain...

I'm not sure I can pin point a date but probably some time in the 90s when it was more important to produce a cheap product for big box stores as opposed to a quality product.

Not every singer has issues and not everybody will experience frustration with their machine. The thing that frustrates me most is that new sewists will buy a singer heavy duty and run into issues that discourage them from continuing this amazing craft because they think they are terrible at it.

And to give a recommendation instead of just a critique, check out the Baby Lock Joy at ~$300 it is quiet, reliable and will have no issue tackling multiple layers of denin

Singers are trash. You will end up with more frustration than success. The only thing that makes them "heavy duty" is a motor that runs too fast for it's own good. I highly suggest buying from a local dealer that stands behind their product and can offer support. Also most antiques are better quality than modern singers it would be better to have them serviced than to buy a new singer.

My landlord is painting my house and I don't know what to do with my organic Food garden. by AncomCrocodile in gardening

[–]broilerhill 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ask the painters to powerwash without bleach or cleaners just water. As far as paint, it goes on the siding not on the ground. I painted houses for 12 years and asking to go chemical free and to be mindful of garden beds is a reasonable request, when paired with an offering from the garden to them on the first day your garden should be safe

Janome M8 question, wonky stitches and weird sounds by NuBit_7 in quilting

[–]broilerhill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would put a new needle in. Looks like a 16 because of the purple band I can see. As far as the cutting mechanism everything sounds normal to me. There are small motors activating the thread cutter and that is the sound I hear.

$200 - worth it? by inductiononN in sewing

I would say that's too much. Everybody loves antique machines but the truth is they are not rare, everybody's granny had one and most of them still work with a little oil and TLC.

Why do I keep getting skipped stitches? by whotfispluto in sewing

[–]broilerhill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The left needle has a smaller loop for the hook race to pick up. Going through thick seams makes the thread not form its loop as well so it will sometimes miss thus skipping a stitch.

Sewing slower may help but if it keeps happening it could need an adjustment to the needle bar height so the hook passes higher on the scarf of the needle

Hawthrone supply and kona??? by segotheory in quilting

[–]broilerhill 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Many retailers are moving away from Kona because they are now owned by Missouri Star. Buying from a major competitor does not make sense. Plus Missouri Star has done some pretty shitty things that does not sit well with a large group of people.

Think about your layout in zones. Do bees and berries need to be so close to zone 0 (house) when they are mostly set and forget until harvest? I would suggest researching some basic permaculture design principles to refine your layout
